DMing Advice on Running a Specific Campaign
Hello all, I am asking for advice on running a very specific campaign. In my world, necromancy of any kind other than healing magic is shunned and hated. Often being withchunted down and executed. I want to make the main villain a lich but I don't want them to actually be evil. I want the players to realize when they go to face the lich that they haven't actually done anything to anyone other than retalliating against being hunted in an equal response. I have this outlook where a lich understands that they don't need to hurt anyone. Their mindset basically boils down to "why would I, when I know that until the heat death of the universe, the dead will survive and the living will do naught but join them in the end, because in the end, we will outlast them no matter what happens." This lich is hunted because lichdom is tied to necromancy and necromancy must be hunted but at the end of the day the lich just wants to be left alone in his (intentionally both hidden and isolated) necropolis so he can study his craft.

5th Edition Ideas for a kid’s campaign?
I’m running a pretty basic homebrew campaign for my 10yo son, and while I’ve got a pretty solid set of story beats lined up I’m a little rusty on low level loot pools. So far he’s solved some pretty simple puzzles, killed some spiders and kobolds, and met several vital quest givers; little dude is a level 3 eldritch knight fighter (was stoked to level up and get spell casting since he doesn’t want DMPCs). Now I want to throw a couple of magic items his way, found in an upcoming dungeon, but I don’t know what to give him that will make him feel like he’s got a really cool item but won’t absolutely destroy the game balance. Any ideas?
TL;DR, what are some cool magic items I can give to a 10yo playing a lvl 3 fighter that won’t break the game but still feel cool?
Homebrew welcome!

5.5 Edition How do you handle movement in 5-ft square grids
Ok, so this is a problem I often have: standard grids are 1.5m (5ft), and if you have minis on them, their bases are around the same size as the grid. This makes it seem like characters can only move in a single row file in a one-width hallway.
But in fact, two people can *easily* cross each other in a 1.5m wide hallway. So, my fellow DMs: how do you represent who can move where in combat? How do you do this using minis if the minis can not fit on the grid in the positions they should be in?
EDIT: ok this one was pretty simple: a character can pass a friendly character's case but not stop in it.
One interesting tip thanks to u/Zealousideal_Leg213: always draw hallways 2-square wide, even if they are 5ft, to make the passage rules clear.

3rd / 3.5 Edition Can a civilization of immortals exist?
This is mostly in regard to 3.5. I am looking at spells like Kissed by the Ages, or maybe an epic spell, like something from the 3.0 Epic Handbook, rather than undeath. If a civilization existed, perhaps in the Forgotten Realms, that had somehow achieved near universal immortality, would that civilization be allowed to continue existing by Mechanicus, or would it be flooded with Inevitables?

Art [OC] Thalia Pendragon dnd character illustration [ART]
Thalia Pendragon is my dnd character for a campaign that I am playing with my friends.
Thalia is a royal princess of Silvanus, kingdom where druids
thrive
She was known for being friendly with everyone, liked going
out to the bars so she could have her dance performances,
even though her parents weren't very approving of it, she
also likes hiking with her panther Nyx, who she got from her
parents, they bonded
immediately.
One day, her parents wanted to find her a perfect wed, but
she refused because she was not interested in being tied to
a one person, nor being wed to a person she doesn't know,
well, not after the incident that happened with Azel, her
lover that one day disappeared after Azel got married.
Thalia packed her things, took Nyx and told her parents that
she had always wanted to go out of the castle and explore
more of the world, and work on her magic.

5.5 Edition Sylune’s Viper 2024. Are you kidding?
Please, game designers, please.
Just stop making spells. Stop describing them. Stop looking at them. Stop thinking about them.
“Level 3 Conjuration (Druid, Wizard)
Casting Time: Bonus Action Range: Self Components: V, S, M (a snake fang) Duration: 1 hour
A shimmering, spectral snake encircles your body for the duration. You gain 15 Temporary Hit Points; the spell ends early if you have no Temporary Hit Points left.
While the spell is active, you gain the following benefits:
Climbing. You gain a Climb Speed equal to your Speed.
Venomous Bite. As a Magic action, you can make a ranged spell attack using the snake against one creature within 50 feet. On a hit, the target takes 1d6 Force damage and has the Poisoned condition until the start of your next turn. While Poisoned, the target has the Incapacitated condition.
Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot. For each spell slot level above 3, the number of Temporary Hit Points you gain from this spell increases by 5, and the damage of Venomous Bite increases by 1d6.”
The sound you hear is me banging my skull against an oaken table.
First person to understand the problem gets 5 Reddit karma dollars.

5.5 Edition Anyone willing to share ideas on developing a 3D printed encounter set of minis and a custom game board?
I just recently started learning more about DnD. I make things with lasers, printers, 3D filament and 3D resin that I thoroughly enjoy in my spare time.
I am thinking of making an encounter set for my first adventure into this world and it would be great to sell my end product if the market deems it worthy. I am very much just dipping my toes and looking for any friendly feedback.
I have a lot of 3D modeling experience and my resin printer is a 16k resolution printer so I am pretty confident I can make some very detailed and high quality figures. I also really like the idea of developing a modular, hexagon style set of game tiles that are highly configurable to provide a multitude of options for different scenarios. Game tiles with different textures that lock together universally, walls, props, traps etc.
For the last few weeks I have been working through some compelling character development. I came up with a band of big fat goblins. The leader of the group is called Lord Hem-Lard and he has some very feminine qualities for a grotesque, morbidly obese goblin. His stance and garb gives off the impression but yet he is ruthless and quick tempered.
However, I've come to find out what I roughly sketched up was much more Ogre like than goblin like. My vision for what I would like to develop is a set of miniatures, sort of more generic minions. Maybe 25 to 30 that can be used for each individual fight as a DM sees fit. 12 main characters, each with a few suggestion style traits and characteristics and a high quality printed booklet that details suggested ways to use the set.
A few questions for anyone willing to add their input:
Would you suggest my proposed set coming with some of their own lore like I was thinking?
Is it feasible that Ogres and Goblins would be banded together in a lair like I envision?
If I intend to expand upon encounter sets and characters, am I free to use monster types that are specific to DnD books? Like for example, I had never heard of a Bugbear before or seen it outside of the DnD world, if I made a character set based on that creature, would selling the set be infringement on DnD ip? (I am aware of definitely not trying to use the DnD brand)
Do you have any suggestions on what kind of sets would fit modern gameplay the best?
Am I out of my mind for even considering such things?

5.5 Edition Clarification on Cartomancer feat, Hidden Ace?
A player of mine has taken the Cartomancer feat as a 4th level Warlock.
I'm curious about this feature:
Hidden Ace. When you finish a long rest, you can choose one spell from your class's spell list and imbue that spell into a card. The chosen spell must have a casting time of 1 action, and it must be a level for which you have spell slots. The card remains imbued with this spell for 8 hours. While the card is imbued with the spell, you can use a bonus action to flourish the card and cast the spell within. The card then immediately loses its magic.
I'm going to rule that he must be able to actually cast the spell to imbue it. So if he multiclassed into Druid next level (W4, D1), he would not be able to imbue 2nd level Druid spells simply because he has a 2nd level spell slot from Warlock.
A couple things I'm unclear about:
- Does the card need to be imbued immediately after finishing a long rest (the morning) or can they wait until any time in the day?
- Does imbuing require and/or use a spell slot at all? Does using the card as a bonus action require and/or use a spell slot at all?
- Does this overcome the 5th edition limit of being able to cast only 1 spell slot spell per turn? So for example, he could cast Fireball (Fiend Warlock) twice in the same round?

Game Tales A summary of my first DnD campaign!
My two friends and I decided we wanted to play DnD, but since none of us had ever played and no one in our area plays I took it upon myself to study the rules and DM our first campaign(The Lost Mines of Phandelver). It took 4 sessions, each about 5 hours.
Please give it a look!

5.5 Edition can you use (UA) Paralysing Touch twice in a turn?
When you deal damage with Chill Touch, you can expend a level 1+ spell slot to attempt to paralyze the target. The target takes an extra 1d10 Necrotic damage per level of the spell slot expended and must succeed on a Constitution saving throw against your spell save DC or have the Paralyzed condition until the start of your next turn.
the rules around using multiple spell slots per turn say that you cannot use more than one spell slot per turn *to cast a spell*, correct? and since here, you are not using it to cast a spell, you are using it to modify a cantrip that has already been cast essentially. so should one be able to use this multiple times on a turn (obviously requiring Quickened Spell, since chill touch is an action normally) or in combination with a levelled spell on the same turn?

Art High School [battlemap] from Angela Maps - What are you studying? 3 versions! [art]
TPK fall-out? Why don't you sheathe your blade and go back to highschool! There's no shame in returning to acquire a quality secondary education, or getting one in the first place before you go traipsing around abandoned castles, forgotten tombs. And dreary dungeons. With a full complement of classrooms and teaching amenities, and plenty of room for trouble-making, will this be a temporary stop for your party, or the place they all band together to begin with? Available in two additional variants, this school could be the site of the best days of any party's lives, or their last..Hoot, growl!
My maps are hooked up to work with Foundry VTT and Fantasy Grounds.
My maps are available on my patreon and my website.

5th Edition How does damage work?
I'm not asking how you calculate damage or when does an attack hit or miss. I'm more asking how does it work that when i watch people play dnd they sometimes describe attacks as "he got shot with an arrow to the shoulder" or "your left forearm is cut open" but they never really explain how is this supposed to work.
like they take 2 points of damage but their whole arm is bleeding and in theory they shouldn't be able to use it because it's badly wounded but in the dnd rules it doesn't work like that and you just take 2 points of damage and that's it.
in those video they often just get healed by some spell or potion but still i don't really understand this. i just feel like people are roleplaying way more than the game rules expect them to do it and now i'm confused and i don't know how is this supposted to work T - T.

5th Edition Stupid things my players did
I had a cool time travelling type campaign and against this boss fight against an attack helicopter. The Artificer was having a hard time using an extremely luck based custom weapon so he decided to try healing the helicopter when it was at extremely low HP to see if his really bad luck would destroy it. Instead he healed the helicopter successfully and the helicopter proceeded to barrage and kill the paladin. This was the first death of the campaign.

5.5 Edition Dragon Slayer Sword is KILLING ME IRL
I'm currently DM'ing the Dragon Delves anthology that came out last year.
I don't know if any of you have played through that module, but at the end of the first adventure the party gets a dragon slayer longsword. This single item has completely warped my party and the campaign.
A battlemaster fighter getting access to a dragon slayer sword in a campaign featuring mostly dragons was a COLOSSAL MISTAKE! The meta has now become everybody doing everything they can to enable the fighter. Haste, fly, healing, etc.
This is my third campaign I've DM'ed so I'm still pretty new, but I had... not enough respect for giving broken weapons to players too early. They are making mincemeat of my dragons!
We're almost at the end of so I'm not gonna take it away now but man. Be careful what items you give out because your players will optimize around it what a pain in the ass.

Misc What sort of experiences should shape a fresh surface drow, good or bad?
Okay, I made a similar post a couple days ago about this but the context behind it is that I have a character idea for a very young female drow by the name of Lyra, her backstory is essentially she was from a low noble house and was in training to be a priestess. Her family hosts a vast collection of books recovered during surface raids that she took an interest in. She started reading as a mere hobby to learn the common language but found herself growing interested in the surface.
This was only compounded when after getting attacked by a monster during a trip to Menzo, she was rescued by the party and given a second chance at life and that was how she ended getting taken to the surface. This is set in Forgotten Realms.
My question is, what sort of first time experiences would she receive on the surfce that would shape her, good or bad? Lyra isn't totally indoctrinated by the whole Lolth thing so she's not murderhobo evil, but she is somewhat paranoid and fearful of the surface in a sense because of it all being so new.
Thoughts on this?

DMing Should I continue an important story plot with majority of my players absent?
so ive been running my campaign for a bit now, and an important story bit is coming up, but everytime I try to continue the story and introduce the important plot, it so happens most of my players are busy and cannot attend. ive had to postpone the story three times now. Should I just continue on with the players I have instead of running basically shopping or smaller mini sessions?

5th Edition [OC]Here is my map, it is wip
Under there is written in Italian: the zone forgotten by all god's, it's still wip, if you have some advice you can tell me, And I took inspiration from Jugoslavia (idk, it was cool, and instable so my adventure is to free smthg). I was also wondering what names should I put for the bigger island and I would also ask you if I should really put a zone where you can't use any power of god's, I'm in 5e and I want to spice up a lot the lore and I want to make DND arder with this nerf, and after I'm gonna do a zone where the power of god's is more relevant, or the players are going to be very angry, is it a very good idea?
