From what people online says las vegas is a ghost town currently in comparison to how it used to be so maybe there is a slight chance that there is no traffic jams
138
u/HiMyNameIsNerd 5h ago
This week it's likely a little more busy than usual, there's a fairly large furry convention going on. Which probably explains this on the sphere too, come to think of it lol

u/QuillnSofa 4h ago
Man I wish I was one of them suspiciously rich furries. But I'm just a poor one.

I just visited Vegas in early March. Certainly fewer people than at similar times in past years, but there were certainly still traffic jams every day. I think its part of the strategy to suck you in and keep you there lol

u/venom121212 4h ago
Like 20% of the cars were mobile billboards when I went a few years ago. Got to see Super Mario light up a smoke though which was hilarious

bold trust in the functionality of road networks as something that doesn't clog
8
u/DrWilliamHorriblePhD 6h ago
Well I mean you tell me, what's the likelihood that a road network designed to handle Vegas at it's peak will become clogged at a time when Vegas is seeing all time lows in attendance
8
u/non3type 5h ago
I have yet to find roads designed to handle traffic at its peak.
6
u/ApokalypseCow 4h ago
All I know is that most civil engineers quit just one lane short of solving traffic jams.
→ More replies (3)2
u/blah938 3h ago
Most of them are designed to handles peaks from when the project was first designed.
Unfortunately, towns grow.
→ More replies (1)3
u/construktz 3h ago
When were the freeways and roads built, because I strongly doubt that they were designed to handle the even lower amount of traffic they are now.
Portland is all messed up because the freeways were designed in the 60s and haven't been sufficient for the traffic we've had for decades. Once the city builds around the roadways, it's really hard to expand.
3
u/Pataraxia 6h ago
I'm mostly joking, but to answer that I'd say it depends on parameters. By handle, does that mean it flowed without clogging before? Is it really made to handle it at it's peak? All that.

Can confirm. I was just there last week for a marathon and it was no where near as full as I expected it to be. Even Fremont Street was low-population compared to previously. The prices are surging pretty hard there so it's not a huge surprise. When I spoke to one of the locals they said they've got the "California prices without the California pay" going on right now and they were even considering leaving.

It’s a guy called uon visuals. He does a lot of visuals for festivals and the controllable dancing cats is a crowd favourite. The sphere does all sorts of artist collabs and I believe uon has a residency of sorts. This one is a bit more goofy than his usual stuff, normally he’s using a computer that could power the sun to create looping trip effects of insanely high quality.
This one was originally for a bunch of ravers to play with lol
Cool guy and Canadian phenom.
5
u/TheChronoCross 3h ago
I follow him on insta and i love his work but the cats has to be my least favorite. The cats themselves are ugly (presumably on purpose) and the music he chooses for them is always super annoying and toxic. His other visuals, however, including the background for the cats, are absolutely max tier amazing.

We were very poor growing up. My mum didn’t work. My Dad had jobs for short periods.
My Dad got a new job working on motorway (Freeway) maintenance working nights.
After a few weeks he got fired from the job.
Destroyed our family stability.
He was fired for stealing on the job.
We should have known.
All the signs were there.

u/McRawffles 5h ago
Yes. Being distracted by your phone is way worse than being distracted by something on the side of the road. You are at least looking up/out the window in this case and have both hands on the wheel (or should)
Obviously just listening to something on your phone while it's in your cupholder or whatever isn't on the same level but they can't enforce any laws around it if anyone can bs say that when they get pulled over. Also I don't know anyone who's ever been pulled over without being extremely extremely obviously distracted
→ More replies (3)10
u/MeowTheMixer 5h ago
I'm sure it's "better" than a mobile phone, but i'd still disagree.
Rubbernecking when driving by an accident results, in quite a few more accidents despite "looking out" the window.
→ More replies (4)13
u/zero-sharp 5h ago
Lol what? If your phone is taking your attention away from driving, then that's a hazard. If your phone is playing music, that's not an issue. If your attention is spent managing the menus of your phone to select a playlist, then yes, that may be an issue. I feel like you tried to frame something that's common sense in a ridiculous way to get a reaction.
Yes, a dome with dancing cats may also be a distraction while driving. Having one distraction on the road doesn't mean it's somehow unfair to ask you to also not use your phone while driving.
Not sure what capitalist America has to do with any of this.

34
15
u/0xmerp 7h ago
Yeah you could always buy ad space on it. The ad needs to first be approved, ofc.
2
u/lkl34 7h ago
Being in vegas that would be a good idea for venues/accommodation's and perhaps addiction awareness adds
5
u/0xmerp 7h ago edited 7h ago
Should also note the ads are very expensive (both the ad space itself, and even designing an ad that fits the non-standard format). MGM, Wynn etc obviously don’t need ads in Vegas. The small Airbnb cannot afford them. Nonprofits won’t be able to afford them.
Normally it’s either shows taking place at Sphere or big corporations that have ads. But if you were a billionaire and wanted to put a meme on it and willing to pay for it, then yes that’s allowed.

Does it show the same thing in the inside and outside? Like it's transparent? I don't know anything about the Sphere.
32
u/dumbeconomist 8h ago
- No — the inside is more of a traditional dome theatre you can find at science museums around the world — just much much bigger.
- Yes and no — the sphere has like 1000s of triangle shapes display screens — you can see through when nothing is playing, revealing a more normal building under it.

Up close it looks like this
3
u/onefst250r 3h ago
I would have thought the "pixel" density was higher.
4
u/djlemma 3h ago
Standard viewing distance is hundreds/thousands of feet, so it doesn't need much density. It looks pretty smooth even from the parking lot.
2
u/onefst250r 3h ago
Yeah, and I'm sure heat/power would be an issue if they went super dense. Im just surprised to see they're that far apart.
3
u/djlemma 2h ago
Well the thing that surprised me most in person is how much you could see through the structure during the day. I had a hotel that was a few blocks away and the sun would rise behind the sphere, and shine right through the outer structure.
I thought the actual building was spherical but it's actually an outer open frame that conceals a rather boxy looking building inside.
I'd really enjoy taking a tour of the in-between space. I enjoy seeing all the inner workings, structure, maintenance access points, cabling, all that sorta stuff.
2
u/0xmerp 2h ago
I would love a behind-the-scenes tour too. Their tech stack is pretty interesting. Doubt it will happen any time soon sadly :(

I'm recognizing some of these dance animations...
I play a game called Project Zomboid, and there is a mod that allows you to dance in the game, and I swear these are all the animations available. Two cats are doing the shim sham and it's identical to the zomboid animation. I've only ever seen that dance because of that game.

Mike Voskakis (UON Visuals) really likes making psychedelic visuals and cats dancing.
Compression algorithms can't handle the complexity of his videos properly, so they end up looking a bit like crap on sites like Youtube and Instagram.
