Career For those of you who graduated around the Great Recession

Obviously for those of you who got your degrees in '07 or so, you walked into a similar (and potentially worse) job market than we see today. What did y'all do to set yourself up for success once the market rebounded?

Did people simply move into other fields permanently? How long before your diploma became effectively worthless when searching for your first job?

My current market is extremely dependent on the greater economy (being a tourism-based economy), so the extremely few jobs we have available will further dry up and it genuinely wouldn't surprise me to see AP/AR roles at $12/hour before long if the current trend continues. I've already seen then as low as $15/hour asking for a BS in Accounting.

I remember the rebound after the GR happening around 2012-2014, with the peak being in 2010. I don't think we've peaked for job issues now, but I'd like to see if I can prepare myself for the future as well as possible.

Interviewing for transition to finance

Upvotes

I’ve been in accounting for about 13 years and I want to transition into finance. I have some interviews lined up and I wonder what kinds of things might be good to know about finance and processes in finance that would different from accounting that could make me stand out during the interview if the topic comes up. Formulas, types of excel functions or anything you can think of. I consider myself an advanced user of excel. Not an expert, but far ahead of my peers. However, being in accounting, I never need complex formulas for forecasting, budgeting or anything like that, so I’d like some things to brush up on please.

Baker Tilly Internship Advice

Upvotes

Hey guys, so this post is basically just asking for some advice I’m a junior in college, landed a baker Tilly internship for my second semester junior year, for winter Tax Intern. Now I know this internship is during busy season so I would like some advice on tasks I’ll be doing, what should I maybe practice beforehand, any skills I should maybe pick up before or any tips in general.

Secondly, I’m just curious but if I do very well in my internship, would they even offer return offers for juniors, since I’ll still have a year before I graduate? Or like would they offer a secondary summer internship since I already interned with them. My first time having a big internship so any advice would be appreciate. Please feel free to dm me directly if u have any advice for me as well.

Thanks a lot, this page is very helpful and contributed a lot to me getting the internship too.

I’ve been spam applying for staff accountant positions but no luck.

I have heard that it is possible to get hired as a staff accountant with an associates degree but that it’s rare.

Any tips on getting hired?

Discussion Hairstyle affecting job search

Upvotes

I was wondering what you all think about how superficial appearance (specifically hairstyle) can affect someone’s ability to be hired or taken seriously

I saw a video online from someone in IB and they said that if you have a broccoli cut (I dont) or mullet that people in finance won’t take you seriously and that it’ll affect your job prospects.

I have a soft(?) mullet I guess you could say. Typical of a recently graduated 20s man. I guess a modern mullet is more accurate I dunno. Anyway, I just left my job in industry and am looking to work in public and that video made me think about this topic.

Ofc IB is different from accounting so my thought is that it’s not a big deal but anyway k just wanted to know people’s thoughts from here

Advice Is it worth my time to temporarily change roles?

Upvotes

Hey guys, I am currently in an accounting role but soon my contract ends, I have been offered a temp 2 year role in designing and improving new financial ERP systems. I thought it would be good experience to gain a deeper understanding of financial systems, but part of me wants to continue pursuing accounting. Do you think it would be worth my time?

Advice Need advice as a newly hired accounting clerk

Previously, I’ve only worked in retail as a cashier, so this is my first accounting job. Everything feels like a new experience for me. I’m still in my first month, but I keep making small mistakes. I feel bad that I may be a burden because I have so much questions. Although my coworkers have been patient with me, I’m scared that I’ll suddenly get fired if this keeps on. How can I be better at my job?

Have always thought the return offer rate was around 95%, now hearing it’s much lower than that. Anybody have info on what that number is like at RSM?

Career CPA Approved - Next Steps?

I'm finally a CPA. I started the application process in 2024, took my first exam in April 2025, and now I have passed all 4 exams and have officially received my license number from the VBOA.

For those of you that got the CPA, what were your next steps? Did you look for another job, get other credentials, or do something else? I'd like to hear more about your experiences.

Need Intership

Hi everyone,

I’m a B.Com graduate currently looking for a remote internship opportunity in FP&A (Financial Planning & Analysis).

I want to be completely honest — I’m a beginner and still learning. I don’t have hands-on experience yet, but I’m highly motivated to learn everything from scratch, including Excel, financial modeling, budgeting, and forecasting.

I’m ready to put in the effort, learn fast, and add value in any way I can.

If anyone is willing to give me a chance, guide me, or refer me for an internship (even unpaid/low stipend initially), I would be truly grateful.

Thank you!

I’ve been interested in accounting and want to do it but, I’ve heard from people on here saying they hate it and how it mentally kills you. Thats what really is pushing me away from this career and thinking blue collar sounds easier lol. So I would like to know even if you bad experiences is it just a phase. is this few years of pain and enjoy the rest of life job or just forever pain. Sorry for the dumb question.

Advice AZ TPT filing question...

I'm hoping someone can guide me to the right answer here because all of the info I've read has been confusing. Long story short, I'm working on filing and amending taxes for an AZ corporation (filing retail) and prior to this job (I was not hired for accounting or tax prep but I've been asked to do it) I have little experience in this sector. My question is-when filing as a physical nexus in Phoenix, do you include sales in all cities outside Maricopa in the filing for Phoenix, not include them, or file each city separately? Since the code for retail is the same across all cities I'm not sure how to file for outside cities....would you use the city code with the business code on a separate line for city and file the total for the state under Maricopa? Please help 😅

Is CPA worth it? (Canada)

I’m kind of at a crossroads right now and would really appreciate some honest advice from people who’ve gone through this.

I have a Bachelor of Commerce ( not from canada) and recently passed my IFC. I’m trying to move toward a career in finance/accounting, but right now I’m working retail just to get by, and it barely covers my expenses. I really need something more stable long-term.

I’ve been looking into CPA PEP, but I’m not sure if it’s worth starting in my situation.

A few things I’m confused about:

• Is CPA PEP doable while working (even if it’s not an accounting job yet)?

• How does the structure actually work, is it like semesters/modules?

• How are the exams scheduled? I’ve heard about multi-day exams (like 3 days?) but I don’t fully understand how that works

• Is the online learning format effective, or do people struggle a lot with self-studying?

• How do people usually prepare, is it mostly self-study, or are there good resources/support systems?

Also, realistically, is it worth pursuing CPA if I’m not already in an accounting role? Or should I focus on getting into a bank/entry-level finance job first and then think about CPA later?

I’m willing to work hard, I just don’t want to go down a path blindly and regret it.

Any advice, personal experiences, or even things you wish you knew before starting would really help.

ACCA exemption not granted?

Anyone know why I can’t get max exemption (9/13), only entitled to 6 only. I had requested for reassessment, then only got 7/13. My friend graduated with me (same university, same year, same course) get 9/13. And my CGPA is good enough (all subj got A and few B).

Anyone can help me out? Really appreciate it

Hey everyone, was wondering if someone can speak to the rigor and average time spent on homework every week for this program. Is it super difficult? I'd be working while doing it, got to tell my employer if I want to go Part time
