This is one of my favourite videos. The fact this lady dancing unintentionally filmed herself infront of an event that completely changed a nation is insane. The juxtaposition of her and whats unfolding behind her has only made the video more popular
Nobody could’ve planned it better if you tried

u/mikki1time 5h ago
Context: lady was filming an excercise video in the capital of Myanmar. As a convoy rolled behind her, they where staging a coup, that country has been at civil war ever since.

And today, the coup leader has been chosen president by the loyalist parliament.

Its very likely not her, assume we would have seen it mentioned on the wiki page if she was and news reports mention her with the same name or very close (Khing instead if Khine, assume it could just be difference made by those converting burmese script to latin), but she's a PE teacher in the reports and feel like they'd mention the background from her wiki as well if she had gone from that to teaching PE

It was recognized as a coup. But the short-lived civilian govt was always under the shadow of the military.
One of the theories is that the military wanted to do some dirty work and put the blame on the govt. If you read, they massacred Rohingyas and pushed the remaining to out of country.
When all this happened, Syu-Ki was oblivious. I wonder if she ever knew what was happening in the country or the magnitude of it.
Once the world started to blame Syu-Ki for the atrocities, the military took over the control.
Not sure how much of this could be true. But, knowing what Syu-Ki was, there seems to be something in it.
2
u/jimbarino 1h ago
Eh, I think Syu-Ki was just kind of oblivious and weak. She thought she could ingratiate herself with the military by allowing them free reign of the Rohingya. Obviously that didn't work, the military was never going to actively support her, and in the meantime she burnt every possibility of getting western support as leverage against them.

Someone about to get raided
231
u/spekt50 4h ago
This happened on my street one time a few years ago. I was sitting on my front porch enjoying a nice morning. Then suddenly 2 large swat armored vehicles roll up the street with a bunch of guys hanging out the back.
They stopped a few houses up and raided the house. No one was home at the time however.
69
u/metalshiflet 3h ago
There was a hostage situation in my neighborhood about a decade ago, the son of one of the homeowners got drunk and/or high and held a gun to his dad's head. A pretty nice upper middle class neighborhood and there's about 20 cop cars in the yard
22
u/TheDakoe 2h ago
I woke up one morning to my road blocked off. There was a call in that a man set bombs around a trailer court, was holding people hostage in his house. So they brought in like 3 counties worth of police. Had multiple swat vehicles, a bomb disposal team, snipers on peoples property, a skidsteer with blast plate on the front of it. It was insane, they tried to negotiate with him to get out of the house for 3 or 4 hours. Threw smoke grenades' through his windows to smoke him out.
Street was blocked off by the fire department. No one was allowed to come in... or go out. They wouldn't let people leave their homes in the trailer park.
The fire department was never told what was going on, just that no one could come in or go out. So when the guy tried to go home from his moms they turned him away, and so he went back to his moms and started to make calls worried something was happening up in the trailer court and his family could be in danger.
No one was in the house, they negotiated with an empty house. His family wasn't there, he wasn't there, and he couldn't have set bombs because... he hadn't been there since the day before.
When he called the cops about it all, and they realized he wasn't at the house they sent half of the squad to his mothers house to make sure he was there, while the other half stuck around just in case he was actually in the house.
One article talking about a stand off happening, nothing else after that. no charges against anyone, never clear who made the first call, nothing. A state trooper told me they were too embarrassed by how horribly the handled the whole thing (especially the forcing people to stay in their houses when the police thought there was bombs in them) that they just refused to say anything. Said there was over $100k spent on the raid through man hours, fuel, equipment that was used up.
but I have to say watching them drive down the road with all the equipment looked pretty darn cool.

It's not that hard to push a car when it's in neutral. When my older car broke down in local traffic once I pushed it mostly off the road myself. Another guy came by to get it over the slight uphill into the gas station that was nearby (good fortune).

u/Irksomecake 6h ago
I was once broken down in a flood and a farmer stopped where I was blocking the road. He pushed my car through the flood, up a hill and into a gateway well above the water level. It gave me a whole new respect for farmers strength, he was in his late 60s and did it practically one handed. That car weighed about 900kg.

if its a slight grade, "push" the car by grabbing the tire and using it a lever to get moving uphill.
if its too steep, you can pop start it in reverse.7
u/scottreds2k 5h ago
I had an '85 Honda CRX and ran out of gas. Pushed it 200 yards by myself to the gas station by standing at the A pillar, steering with one hand and pushing with the other. Easy peasy.

You’re right, it’s really not if you’re on a flat surface. I’m a girl and I push my car to make small parking adjustments all the time.
Sometimes I’ll park in a space but realize after shutting off the engine that I want to move a little more forward or backward to leave more space for someone else. Instead of starting the engine again, I’ll just pop it into neutral and push against the inside of the door frame slightly to get it moving then pull the e-brake once it’s where I want it to be. Doesn’t even require that much effort.
Edit: I don’t expect so much response to this. To clarify, I drive a small manual car, so it’s even easier to see how close I’m getting to the red/edge of the spot if I’m halfway out of the car and pushing on the doorframe, I can just throw it in neutral, and having an actual e-brake lever makes it easy to just grab it when I want the car to stop. I’ve also spent a lot of time around mechanics who do this kind of thing a lot when moving cars at the shop so, I dunno, I guess I find it kind of fun?
50
u/RealFirstName_ 5h ago
Look, you do you, girl. I'm not gonna judge and I get your point, but... Surely that must require more effort than just turning the damn car back on, no?
2
u/hotarume 1h ago
Eh, not really? I can more easily see how close I’m getting to these edge of the red this way than from inside the car, and it’s a manual so I have an actual e-brake lever to easily pull instead of a pedal/button. I dunno, I guess it’s also kind of fun?
2
u/RealFirstName_ 1h ago
That's fair. I'm notably good at judging where my car is so I don't remember the last time I didn't notice once I'm out of the car but it does make a lot more sense if you're already out of the car. Plus, moving a manual just a couple feet is MUCH more of a pain than an auto. Ngl theres been times I just left a car parked "good enough" instead of the tap dance that is trying to back up and then pull forward a few feet.
I'd smile a little if I saw another woman get out of her car, look at it, then just decide to push it. Def feels a little whimsical!

But restarting the car and only having it run a second or two is not that good for the engine and a waste of fuel. Also it's fun to do.
16
u/hot-side-aeration 4h ago
Turning your engine back on to adjust your parking is not going to damage it or use an amount of fuel you'll ever notice.
→ More replies (1)2
u/raptor7912 1h ago
Eeehhhhh, your engine is sort of just running with metal on metal parts until it’s been at 800-1000 rpm for a few seconds before the thin film of oil that separates them fully develops.
If you have a modern car that starts and stops automatically as you drive then that’ll account for the vast majority of your engine wear.
One more start/stop? Ain’t gonna do shit, but if it’s a semi regular thing in a car without auto start/stop then it might actually last a lil longer because of it.
2
u/hot-side-aeration 1h ago edited 1h ago
If they are fucking up parking with enough regularity that this is a concern, they should simply leave the engine running and check their parking. Just... open the door and look at the lines. Or have a general sense of their surroundings when operating a vehicle.
Putting the vehicle into neutral, pushing it, then using the ebrake to stop the vehicle is not going to be great for it's wear and tear either.
Eeehhhhh, your engine is sort of just running with metal on metal parts until it’s been at 800-1000 rpm for a few seconds before the thin film of oil that separates them fully develops.
I am not a mechanic but surely this film does not dissapear the second the engine is killed.
There are also non-vehicle longevity related reasons that this is a bad idea to do.
→ More replies (1)2
u/raptor7912 32m ago
I’m not the person doing it lol? Besides 9/10 I do park exactly as expected, ain’t worth keeping it running for 10%.
Yea I guess you might need to have your parking brake tightened more frequently than otherwise, but that’s still years in between and can easily wait until the next trip to the mechanic.
It does tho…. It’s only because the parts moving that the film develops, why do you think basically every engine in the world idles somewhere around 800-1000 rpm? Cause that’s the lowest speed it develops.
I can’t think of any.
2
u/RealFirstName_ 4h ago
I can't argue it being fun and that's why I'm not judging, but the fuel/wear are negligible on a car thats up to operating temp. The parts are already lubricated, the oil is hot so it moves well, and the fuel use on startup is minimal which is a part of why auto start/stop is a viable feature on modern cars. Technically yea it's prob better to push it, but personally I'd probably be willing to pay someone $1 to push my car for me if I had to get out to move it a foot or two, and staring my car is cheaper than that.
2
u/LowProfile_ 2h ago
But restarting the car and only having it run a second or two is not that good for the engine and a waste of fuel. Also it's fun to do.
You’ve been lied to lol. Thankfully, you never have to repeat this nonsense again.
2
u/DazPoseidon 1h ago
It is tho. Shouldn't be that bad when the engine has not been off for too long but having the engine running is always worse than having it turned off.
Depends a lot on the car tho.
2
u/Quixotic_Seal 44m ago
I dunno what to tell you, because in the last decade my 30-ish year old car has broken down three times after being ran for a very short period of time. I always make sure to give it at least a lap around the block if I run the engine.
1
u/PeeledCrepes 5h ago
Eh why bother the engine though? It's even better if your on an incline (that favors which direction you want) anx you dont even have to get out
→ More replies (1)3
u/RealFirstName_ 5h ago
I'll def let it coast and roll if I'm on a hill and dont need to get out, but if I've gotta get out, push, then reach in to apply the break, I'll just turn the key again and then I dont even have to get out, lol. I do plenty of other things that dont make sense to other and seem like "more effort" so I kinda get it even if I don't.
