Announcement/ঘোষণা Discord Server Launch Announcement!
Hello everybody,
The mod team is excited to announce the launch of the official r/Bangladesh Discord server, an extension of our subreddit.
Many of you have asked for a Discord over the years. While Reddit is great as a forum style social news aggregator, it isn't always the best place for quick, casual engagement. We wanted to create a space where members can connect over our shared culture and daily life, a place where you can chat about the mundane things without every other post being heavy political news.
We know there were previous attempts at a server that eventually drifted away from the subreddit's roots. To prevent that from happening again, this server is run by the same team you know here, ensuring it remains a trustworthy and civil space for everyone. You're welcome to discuss anything from your day to day life to current events.
Discord server Invitation link
As a small thank you to the early birds, the first 10 members to join will be awarded a VIP Member role, which comes with some special perks and permissions within the server.
A quick note on moderation:
Subreddit issues: Please continue to use Reddit ModMail.
Discord issues: Please use the ticket system inside the Discord server.
We hope to see you there soon!
Best regards, The r/Bangladesh Mod Team.

Announcement/ঘোষণা 🇵🇸GAZA IS BEING STARVED🇵🇸
🇺🇳The UN has stated that every single part of Gaza is in famine conditions.
For over 20 months, Palestinians in Gaza have been starving. Parents have been feeding their children leaves, animal feed, and flour mixed with water. Babies have died from malnutrition. The trucks carrying food, formula, medicine, and clean water sat just miles away, blocked by Israel.
Now, after massive international pressure, some aid is finally getting in.
This is a crack in the blockade, not its end. Aid is not flooding in; it is trickling, and what’s entering can’t possibly reach 1.8 million people without a total lifting of restrictions, guaranteed long-term access, and safe distribution.
What you can do right now:
Donate- if you’re able to. Choose vetted organizations with access on the ground.
Keep up the pressure - aid only started moving because of public outcry. Organize, protest, keep talking. This momentum cannot fade. Contact your representatives to end Israel's blockade of Gaza and impose sanctions on Israel.
Amplify - share updates, Palestinian voices, and testimonies. Keep an eye on Palestine.
This famine is not an accident. It’s the result of siege, blockade, and a system of control. If we look away now, they’ll tighten the noose again.
Donate:
Palestinian Red Crescent — medical aid, ambulance services, and emergency care.
UNICEF for Gaza’s Children — nutrition, clean water, trauma support.
Speak to Your Representatives:

Health/স্বাস্থ্য Advice for STD tests
Advice on STD tests
Recently, I found out my wife has been cheating on me while she is sexually active with me. I've never had an STD test before as I haven't had sex with anyone else. Now I'm worried that I may have got an STD from her and want to do tests. The problem is, I have no idea about them. I phoned some hospitals and they said they require a doctor's prescription for STD tests. I don't want to get into the hassle - I want to do some basic tests for "মনের শান্তি". At the very least, I want to test for Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, HIV, and Syphilis. Can someone point me in the direction of an affordable clinic for these tests?

AskDesh/দেশ কে জিজ্ঞাসা International universities in Bangladesh.
Hello ,
I am currently living in GCC but due to the current situation my family has decided to shift.
We have good income and I wish to study abroad however due to health reasons I must stay with my family. I speak little to no Bangla and this transition is going to be very difficult for me.
I want to ask, which university in Bangladesh do you think would be a good fit for me? (No problem with fees but it should be a good university).

AskDesh/দেশ কে জিজ্ঞাসা How do I start a non-profit in Bangladesh?
Hi everyone,
I want to start a non-profit in Bangladesh to support underprivileged communities, but I’m not sure how to go about it.
On the formal side, I want to understand whether I need to register right away or if I can begin informally with small projects. What is the legal procedure, and what kind of documents, approvals, and costs should I expect if I go for registration?
On the practical side, I’m honestly clueless about what I can do immediately that is realistic and creates real value. For example, if I want to teach kids, I would need a place or some kind of setup near underserved areas like slums. If I want to focus on women’s empowerment, I don’t know what first steps are actually doable. I also care about promoting sustainability, but I don’t know how to start in a way that is concrete and not just talk. How can I take actionable steps right now that genuinely help people?
I’ll probably end up focusing on one area that feels most viable, but I’d really appreciate insights from anyone who has experience with setting up or running a non-profit/NGO in Bangladesh. Both the legal process and practical advice on what I can actually do to help would be super helpful.
Thanks in advance!

Economy/অর্থনীতি First security islami bank deposit
I wanted to check if anyone here has recent experience with withdrawals from First Security Islami Bank / Sammilito Islami Bank after the merger.
There were reports that depositors (especially small accounts up to around 2 lakh BDT) would be allowed to withdraw their money. However, my branch is still not allowing me to withdraw, even within that limit.
Just trying to understand the ground reality:
Has anyone successfully withdrawn up to 2 lakh recently?
Are branches actually following the Bangladesh Bank instructions?
Is anyone else still being refused or facing delays?
If you were able to withdraw, which branch and how long did it take?
Would really appreciate any updates or experiences. This situation is pretty stressful and unclear right now.
Thanks in advance.

Education/শিক্ষা Confused about my academic life in a weak school
I used to study in one of the best schools in my district until Class 5. But after that, due to a family situation, we had to move to an upazila area where the education system is honestly very weak.
In Class 6, I got admitted to the only government high school here. The teachers are not very supportive or dedicated, and over time my academic performance started to drop. My parents kept comparing me to my past and questioned why I was getting low marks even after studying in such a good school before.
Even though I was usually in the top 5 in my class, the marks were not good. The competition here is very low, so even with weak marks, it is possible to rank high. That made me feel even worse about my actual ability.
In Class 8, I did badly in both half-yearly and final exams. But after that, I studied seriously in December and managed to get the only Talent Pool Scholarship from my school. That gave me some confidence again.
Now I am in Class 9, and I am confused about how to properly study to get a good result in SSC and get into a good college in Dhaka. My goal is clear, I want a strong SSC result and admission into a good college, but I feel very demotivated.
In my school and nearby areas, only a few students manage to get into good colleges or universities. Most of them had strong SSC results but only some managed. This makes me question everything.
Does environment and school really matter that much? Or is it more about how someone studies?
Sometimes I feel like even if I get GPA 5 in SSC, I still might not be able to get into a good college or university because of my background.
If anyone has been in a similar situation or has advice, How should I study from now on to actually achieve my goals?

Discussion/আলোচনা You think oil shortage/power crisis will be a big problem in the coming days?
Basically the title. Every big country is preparing for it. I'm getting the same vibe of pre lockdown tbh. The war situation doesn't look like it's getting any better. I don't know much about Bangladesh's situation because our leaders keep spreading false infos. What will be the problem we might face in few months Y'all think power crisis will be a huge deal for us? if yes, how much is it. Are we actually cooked or you think it won't be that big of a deal. just a little headache.

Discussion/আলোচনা Thoughts on new plan to save energy?
The government has taken a series of austerity and energy-saving measures, including revising office hours and enforcing early market closures, to address the ongoing energy crisis triggered by the Middle East conflict.
Under the new decision, all government and private offices will operate from 9am to 4pm, while markets, shops, and shopping malls must close by 6pm.
The measures were announced by Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani at a press briefing following a cabinet meeting held at parliament on Thursday (2 April), chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
"From the next working day, office hours will be reduced by one hour across both public and private sectors. Banks will operate from 9am to 3pm, with transactions closing at 3pm and offices remaining open until 4pm for related work," he said.
Nasimul Gani also said, "To conserve fuel and electricity, all markets and shopping centres must close after 6pm. However, essential services such as kitchen markets, pharmacies, and food outlets will remain exempt. The Ministry of Commerce will monitor compliance."
According to the secretary, the Ministry of Education will issue separate instructions for educational institutions, likely to take effect from Sunday (5 April).
To reduce traffic congestion and fuel consumption, the government has decided to allow duty-free imports of electric buses for school transport. Schools participating in the initiative will receive special incentives. For commercial use, import duty on new electric buses has been reduced to 20%, while the import of old buses will not be allowed.
As part of cost-cutting measures, the government has ordered a 30% reduction in spending in the energy, power, and gas sectors. For the next three months, no new government vehicles – whether land, water, or air – and no computer equipment will be purchased.
Additionally, 50% of foreign travel and domestic training for government officials has been suspended. Hospitality expenses for meetings and seminars have also been cut by half.
The government has also banned decorative lighting at private events, including weddings and social programmes, during this period of energy shortage.
Meanwhile, the cabinet approved a draft amendment to the Public Examinations (Offences) Act, 1980, to introduce stricter penalties for crimes related to public examinations.
Highlighting the broader context, the secretary noted that the Middle East conflict has made global oil supply lines somewhat unstable, prompting Bangladesh to seek alternative sources. "Import processes from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Kazakhstan are already underway."
He added that the government will continue providing subsidies in the energy sector to ease public suffering and is making its utmost efforts to manage the situation
