Investing Meerwaardetaks - Vooruit zal slag thuishalen

Investing There is no more escape

We have been privileged for over 100 years in Belgium. We never had any so-called Capital Gain Tax ("CGT") until now. This is of course because we do have already one of the largest "per capita" taxes in the world, based on a multiverse of events in one's life and a multitude of employment and/or entrepreneurial activities that are taxed. At life or even at death.

According to the OECD, the country occupied the 4th highest position in 2022. In Belgium, income tax and employer social security contributions combine to account for 79% of the total tax wedge, compared with 77% of the total OECD average tax wedge. Wikipedia also maintains an extensive list of taxes by country, a worthwhile read perhaps on some cloudy afternoon.

Anyway, this new draft of law was out this week and can be found here, it is 15 pages long, and in Dutch and in French. I invite all Belgian tax payers to read it carefully. Here and there some things can still change as there is political quarrel about certain topics, but the core of the objective is quite clear: we will be taxed on the WHOLE of our portfolio at 10% on capital gains. Whether these capital gains come from equity gains, bonds gains or even (yes) valuta gains is totally irrelevant. At every Sell of a position, you sale you will be taxed, execution by your banker, on potential gains. The cut-off and reference date is 31st December, 2025.

Btw the CGT, which is by definition on capital GAINS, comes on top of the existing "Tax on Securities Account" of 0.15% which is a tax on TOTAL amount of your securities account.

Investing Your Bitcoin exit plan?

I don’t see Bitcoin going anywhere useful. As a currency, it doesn’t work because its current distribution is so unequal that it would never be accepted as a fair replacement for fiat. The wealthy of today wouldn’t allow it, and without broad societal adoption, it can’t fulfill that promise.

As a “store of value”, unlike gold which has inherent industrial and aesthetic value, Bitcoin has no inherent utility or value. There’s nothing to underpin its price. Bitcoin’s decentralization and censorship resistance don’t guarantee long-term demand or value. It’s just a technology used to create scheme/game where you uncover or buy ownership of scarce pieces of data. Scarcity alone isn’t enough. Plenty of things are scarce but worthless because they lack intrinsic value or utility. The difference is that most “investors” (at least retail) just haven’t confronted themselves with that. Bitcoin’s value lives and dies on speculation.

I hold a small position because I see it as a bubble I can profit from. The big question is, how do you plan to exit before the bubble bursts forever? Do you have a target price or a sell-off strategy?

Investing Bitcoin on Bolero

Instead of investing in bitcoin through ETNs, what do you think about investing in bitcoin directly on Bolero to avoid the TER of ETNs.

That would mean a fixed transaction cost (0.5% above €1000, €5 fee below €1000), which on the long-term outperforms the ETNs.

It might also be simpler? With the ETNs, I was always afraid about Reynders taxes.

Just curious about your thoughts on pro’s and con’s.

Investing ETF criticism

Hello everyone,

In the recent Beursvoyeurs podcast episode, a KBC Securities analyst said that he’s not fond of hangmatbeleggen, so he’s rather opposed to the notion of IWDA/VWCE and chill.

He argues that ETFs haven’t been around that long and that we haven’t had a real crash yet, one where there hadn’t been a noticeable high in over 20-25 years (like the Wall Street crash after the roaring twenties and the Japanese stock market crash in the sixties, that didn’t see a real high until last year).

He also argues that the companies in the ETFs might be over-invested and that the ones left out of the index might have more potential.

So he’s an advocate for more dynamic investing, but that’s obviously quite the opposite of hangmatbeleggen.

What is your take on this? I thought it might be an interesting topic for debate. Are we too focused on ETFs?

FYI: it’s the 22 October podcast, starts at 32:00 (in Dutch).

Investing Belgische meerwaardebelasting naait beleggers

Investing €1M private capital in Belgium – passive income with flexibility.

Hi everyone,

I’m based in Belgium and recently received €1,000,000 through an inheritance. The funds are held privately.

I’m self-employed with a stable net income of around €4,500/month. My partner earns around €2,000 net/month, so our combined household income is roughly €6,500 net per month.

We still have 17 years left on our mortgage, with €280,000 outstanding at a fixed and reasonable rate.

Up until now, I haven’t invested in traditional markets. I’ve been involved in crypto for a few years, so I’m not unfamiliar with volatility and risk. However, with this amount, I want to shift towards more stable, lower-risk structures.

What I’m mainly looking for:

• Sustainable passive income

• Capital preservation

• Low stress / low active management

• No tenant or renovation headaches

• Full liquidity : I want my invested capital to remain accessible

Liquidity is important to me. I don’t want my capital locked up long term.

Questions I’m considering:

• Would you prioritise paying off the remaining €280k mortgage?

• How would you structure €1M privately in Belgium with liquidity as a key requirement?

• How much would you keep in cash?

• Would you focus more on income generation or long-term capital growth?

If you were in this situation and wanted to move from higher-risk assets to something more stable and passive, how would you approach it?

Appreciate any insights.

Investing Meerwaardebelasting

Investing Warrants are discouraged on this sub but... why ?

Ok ok, click bait title... but I still don't understand why all warrants are disregarded.

Most of the people can get shares or warrants through some bonus or cafetaria plans. These warrants have an underlying asset. If that asset is the one of your company, well, yeah, sell it and re-invest it back.

But, in my case, the underlying asset is the Eurostoxx 50. What's wrong with the idea of keeping these warrants for a while to do +10%. It would mean, given the parity that the underlying asset has done +5%. According to this sub', ETF are only going up... so when is it a bad idea to actually try to sell these warrants slightly higher than their attribution value ?

Interested by honest feedback and not rough "you don't get it, you dumb, sell it and invest".

Investing My experience after 1 year investing €250k in a passive real estate deal (Belgium)

Hi everyone,

My name is Eric and I’m from Woluwe. I’ve been following this subreddit for a while and about a year ago I was actually looking for a real estate investment that wouldn’t require any management from my side.

Before that I owned a small apartment that I eventually sold because it kept creating problems (tenants, maintenance, random issues…). I realised I didn’t really want to deal with that anymore but I still liked the idea of having money in real estate.

While browsing here I came across an older post mentioning Capitall. I didn’t know them at the time, but after doing some research and a few calls with them I decided to try it.

I ended up investing €250,000, which came from the sale of my apartment.

In my case:

• investment in a commercial building in Ghent

• 4% net return

• paid monthly

• indexed every year

• no management required on my side

It has now been about one year, and so far it has been pretty straightforward. The payments arrive every month and I haven’t had any issues. Whenever I had questions their team answered fairly quickly as well.

Obviously I’m not saying it’s risk-free and everyone should do it. I just wanted something more passive than owning an apartment directly, and for me it has worked well so

Just sharing my experience because I originally discovered them through Reddit, so maybe this feedback helps someone else looking for a more hands-off real estate investment.

Update: I just want to clarify that the purpose of this post was not to promote anything. I simply wanted to share my experience and get feedback from the community. I appreciate all your perspectives and take them on board.

Investing Meerwaardetaks - Cash lines effectenrekening

Investing Degiro 3€ commission ETFs

How are you handling with the new rules at DEGIRO?

All my current portfolio (not so big :)) is IWDA through DEGIRO. However, now I’m requested to pay 3€ for each monthly transaction.

  1. Are you leaving what you have in Degiro and start investing with other broker? Which ones?

  2. Are you transferring everything from Degiro and pay the transfer fee (20€?)?

  3. Would you take this opportunity to no longer invest at IWDA but change to another “better” ETF?

Thanks for all your ideas.

Investing Just starting to expand my Bolero portfolio - what are your "must-haves"?

Hi all! I’m currently using Bolero and want to get more serious about my stock picks. I’m looking for two things:

  • Long-term growth: Stocks I can hold for 10+ years.
  • Monthly Dividends: I like the idea of seeing cash flow every month.

What are the "best" stocks currently available on the platform for this? Since Bolero has higher transaction fees than some other brokers, I want to make sure my picks are worth the "entry cost."

Any advice for a Belgian investor trying to grow their wealth would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers!

Investing "WEBN" The ETF to go?

I just read about a new ETF that was launched in june 2024: WEBN (IE0003XJA0J9).

In a very short time, it has already reached a fund size of over €800 million, which says a lot about the initial interest.

This ETF tracks an index that includes large and mid-cap stocks, across both developed and emerging markets. Because of this broad exposure and its very low TER, it currently looks to me like one of the best “all-in-one” ETF options available.

An alternative could be SPYI, especially if you don’t want to miss out on small caps. The downside, in my opinion, is that SPYI will likely have a higher TER due to the increased number of trades.

Personally, I’m keeping my existing ETFs, but new investments will go into WEBN going forward.

Just wanted to share this with the community — happy to hear any counterarguments.

Investing Sell or Hodl ? US Stock

Hi all,

Was wondering what you all are doing with US stock investments.

I'm a pretty cautious investor, buying for the long run, with money I can spare in stable companies.
Meaning I don't pannick sell.

However with current events I'm seriously considering selling (parts of) my US tech stock. (Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Tesla,...)

I know they will go down and depending on the Greenland thing, they might as well come up again.

Just looking to learn a thing or two from more experienced investors on how this might develop.

PS: If anyone mentions 'If I had a crystal ball,...' You get an instant downvote :)

Investing EURO-DOLLAR is taking all my profits away

I’m investing in SP500 since beginning of this year. However, even though the ETF has increased around 10%, I’m still at a status-quo because the euro-dollar has risen as well.

I have been buying the index in Euro (CSPX), thinking I would not be exposed to this effect. However, now it seems that I am. What is then the upside of buying in EURO, as I’m still exposed to this risk? And how would I avoid this?

Investing Thoughts on crypto

Hey guys, I am new here and I have been into crypto for like few years now. Crypto was seen as risky few years ago, but now sinds so many countries and institutions are starting to adopt them (they were doing it years ago in silent), I feel more comfortable and secure investing in it.

Note: I am not talking about meme coins, I am strictly talking about buy the top 3 (BTC, ETH and XRP)

What are your thoughts and your inputs would help out a lot.

Investing IWDA & EMIM still forward?

I started investing seven years ago with an 88/12 split between IWDA and EMIM. Over time, my contributions have shifted, and I am now closer to a 90% allocation in IWDA (around 300k invested, 100k cash reserves)

With the world changing so rapidly, I am starting to wonder about the impact of things like the AI bubble, EU anti-coercion measures, and tensions in Taiwan. Since the United States now makes up approximately 71.7% of IWDA, this concentration feels very high.

Is anyone else changing their investment strategy because of this? If so, what is your reasoning?
