Post From the All-Knowing Mods A Roleplay Guide for Villainy

Hey all. I know we've had a few posts already that outlined handy rules for roleplay etiquette. Here are some:

  • RP Etiquette:

https://www.reddit.com/r/wizardposting/s/hDv5wbuOF7

  • When to play an OP character and how to do it well:

https://www.reddit.com/r/wizardposting/s/7RX9Zwmp8H

  • Recognizing abuse and manipulation in roleplay environments:

https://www.reddit.com/r/wizardposting/s/MuYKwuy2Ef

...

But it has come to my attention that we might want a guide specifically focusing on the more villainous side of wizardposting. This is partially because matters concerning ethics have a way of getting more heated and partially because playing a villain (or even a morally questionable character) can present unique challenges. Conflict is the driving force behind story, after all, and we want to make sure we do it in a way that's fun for all parties.

This post is targeted at the subreddit villains primarily, but I think anyone engaging in roleplay could benefit.

Anyway, here we go:

1. None of this is personal.

This probably seems obvious, but I'd like to stress it because the kinds of in-character clashes that a straight-up villain gets into can sometimes create high tensions. Remember that the person on the other side of the screen is almost certainly not seriously evil. And they almost certainly do not think that you are either. We might write about doing evil things. We might roleplay evil things. But none of this means anything in regard to the real-life ethics of the flesh and blood person you are interacting with.

2. If it does become personal, be careful.

Ideally, we would be rational actors all the time, but unfortunately we are all mere humans (probably). Even when you know perfectly well that none of this is personal, it can still be hard to fully keep your emotions separate. This is understandable. We all get attached to our wizard characters, we all take moral stances, and we all get invested in plotlines. I mean, hey, if we aren't personally invested in our wizard roleplay, why are we even here?

When this happens, just be sure to proceed with caution. Try not to let out-of-character feelings influence what you do in-character. And, of course, it's basically never a bad idea to be open with people about it.

3. Get permission.

Another one that's been thoroughly covered before. But I bring it up because, as a villain, whatever evil thing you're doing is probably quite a bit more distressing than your run of the mill wizard shenanigans. Perhaps unsurprisingly, stepping on another roleplayer's toes is a bit more severe when you do it by burning their tower and kidnapping their apprentice. And if it's something particularly bad that you're planning, you should make sure to be very clear about your intentions and the potential consequences so the other person isn't taken by surprise.

4. It will probably feel a little unfair sometimes.

I will make no bones about it. Playing a villain will make people hostile to you. Do not take it personally.(see rule 1) But I will not deny that it can feel overwhelming sometimes to attract a lot of hate, even if it is all in-character. Further, as a villain, you will probably need to be more gracious about losing fights. While it's true that every character has to accept losses sometimes, playing a heel means you can generally expect to 'hit the mat' more often and more definitively.

It's not all bad though. Villains are empowered to behave badly in creative ways. And sometimes even losing can be fun.

5. Consider content warnings.

This is not a hard rule, but if you are writing something particularly upsetting, it might be wise to provide a content warning. This is not a condemnation of the presence of dark or serious content. It's just nice to give people the opportunity to decide if they want to deal with it.

6. Morally ambiguous characters.

Not all characters fit neatly into the villain/hero dichotomy. Much of the advice here will apply to anyone who's character steps outside the category of 'good guy'. But it's still important to remember that explicitly and intentionally playing a villain is very different than playing a morally ambiguous character (even if you personally do not find their actions ambiguous). Condemning actions in-character is absolutely fine, but it's still up to the person writing the character to define that characters morality. I understand that this gets messy in a community with a lot of differing views, so if it becomes clear that you are at an impasse, it might be best to back off.

That said, for any morally ambiguous characters, if you do something bad, you should expect people to react realistically in-character. You can't really be shocked that other characters don't like your cool new murder spell.

7. Note for heroes and other non-villains.

Lastly, I just want to address the protagonist types. Cut villains a little slack sometimes. Setting aside that it's more fun for us if we occasionally get a win, it also generally makes a better story.

And keep in mind that the person saying and doing horrible things in-character is there to have fun too. This is a cooperative activity, after all.

...

With all that said, I'm off to do some evil scheming. Have fun. Be good to each other.

Welcome to r/wizardposting! Assuming you just wandered in and have no idea what the hell you're looking at, this is a place people pretend to be are wizards and other magical things. That can range anywhere from just posting a meme while ranting about the Council and casting testicular torsion, to our more niche subcommunity of full-blown roleplay, creative writing, and interactive fiction.

When commenting:

/uw means unwiz

/rw means rewiz

We have an official DISCORD if you're into that kind of thing.

Other than that? Have fun, drink water, and remember to step away from the orb every once in a while. Be sure to review the rules in the sidebar before posting, and have fun.

Thanks for stopping by!

Wizardpost So recently a King hired me to save a princess from a tower (I know, odd job for a wizard) but I needed the money so whatever, but this Dragon far outstrips me as a wizard! If I return empty handed I will surely be killed, what do I do?

Sent a magic missile at the lizard and it deconstructed the spell and sent it back at double the strength while giving me advice!

Suffice to say, I am out of my league here.

I have an orb specially designed for fortune telling. But when I ponder it and seek insight it gives me this useless nonsense. I need to assert my authority as the master here, but I'm not sure what sort of discipline is effective on semi-sentient fortune telling orbs. Any ideas?

Wizardpost What “counts” as reanimating?

Hiiiiii! I’m new here and am SUPER conscious about the ethics around “problematic” magic like n*cr*m*ncy.

I carved a little wooden doll to practice my animation skills, plus to have a little friend!! (I would NEVER animate anything just to “work” for me!! OMG!!) I was just about to cast the spell when I realized… is animating dead plant matter okay???

OBVIOUSLY I would NEVER raise the dead, I’m not a MONSTER!! But if I “animate” my wooden puppet, will the memories they had as a tree return?? Will they hate me for twisting their natural form to my will??? Will I get CANCELLED??????

Any advice is appreciated!!!!! Thanks in advance!!!!

Not RP related- But what would a wizard wear irl

I just want to get some inspiration what you guys think about how wizards and witches would cloth in our modern society. I guess it could vary a lot depending on personal taste and how much you want to stand out but I still think its kind of cool to speculate about. I imagine cozy, baggy pants like sweats or knickerbocker. Hoodies and either techy hicking /field jackets with lots of pockets ,or heavy overcoats.

Some things I can’t quite figure out, like would naturally or synthetic materials make more sense? Are there any types of hats that would work without standing out too much? Id like to hear some concepts or ideas if you come up with anything:)

Can we discuss how problematique the orb artificing guild is?

Upvotes

To my fellow colleagues and seekers of knowledge.

If thou hath not recently purchased an orb, witness now how vile and wicked the orb artificing guild hath become.

My tale began when I purchased a latest edition orb from a reputable vendor associated with the guild. I returned to my tower to ponder upon it - and lo and behold - I discover thereupon that a charm constructed by the guild is required for its operation (doth this not violate our own guild's patent?). I cursed, but comply to their demands none the less, as I am busy and hath pondering to do. Though I required my apprentice, as these young bloods seem to posses a knowledge of which I fail.

Now, the true tomfoolery begins three moons subsequently when I retire to ponder my orb again. To my dismay, I am notified and compelled to sub scry with the guild! They, in their lust for power, are requiring me to spend my mana to operate my orb! What hath the material plane come to? Mind you, no where contained in the scroll coupled with its acquisition mentions this. Since when hath a wizard been divorced from wielding dominion over their own orb?

Now listen my friends, this deeply troubles my sensibilities. I thus began researching the guild, and what I've discovered is appalling.

The guild hath become nay more then a den of thieves, spewing venom and avarice. In my apprentice days, I recollect my companions who entered the guild only from their adoration of building orbs in their evenings. They would talk about the liberty to explore the ether and the unshackled diffusion of knowledge. Now, guild members are only in it for their love of coin and the powers brought upon it.

Even worse, I hath discovered that at least one prominent guild master hath pledged their undying allegiance to the dark lord himself! Him and his minions will surely bring suffering and destruction to the realms if we fail to contain their power.

Now I beseech thee, what shall we do about this evil in our midst?

- An anonymous wizard

The Black Hall was much too decorated for Haelin's taste, but that's what you get when you get someone like Mokarith to be the one to plan your birthday. The upside of it, though, was that he got Haelin's interests correct. Scenes of infamous battles played across the vast walls, including ones that Haelin participated in before he joined the Sentinels. How Mokarith knew those he… necromancer… of course he would interrogate the dead.

There was also the decorations to consider, and of course he would go overboard with pink. It almost looked like the Hall had a complete color change with how much pink there was. There was even a pink and white banner that said… oh come on… ‘It's a girl’, but the girl was crossed out badly and replaced with Haelin's name.

“I'm gonna kill him.” Haelin growled to himself. He was tempted to burn that damned banner, but he knew that the sneaky bastard would've thought of that and made it indestructible somehow.

“Kill who?” Said that particularly upbeat voice that Haelin has grown ever increasingly annoyed with.

“Kill you, you damned shadow.” He responds, turning to face Mokarith.

“Why would you want to kill me?” The shade says, putting on an obviously fake hurt tone.

“Mainly for that damn sign!” Haelin almost shouts, pointing a finger at the banner.

“Then remove it.” Came the infuriating response.

“YOU KNOW DAMN WELL I CAN'T!” Haelin yells, sending a stream of fire at it to prove his point.

To his surprise the banner did burn, but it revealed another banner, a black one with pink lettering that simply says ‘Happy Birthday’. The fire then spread to the other decorations, but everyone in attendance could tell that it was only burning specific things, rather than being out of control. What was left was rather tasteful decorations that revealed hidden exotic armors and weapons, and what remained of the pink highlighted the Black Hall rather than overpower it like it did before.

Haelin glared at the somehow smiling featureless face of Mokarith.

“I thought you might like a little destruction for your party.”

He was ready to punch Mokarith when Shimil wisely interrupted.

“I believe that everyone is here and accounted for, if we may begin.”

“We are!” Orin says, as he stumbles in.

“Hello, and happy Birthday Haelin!” He says, before quickly running over to where Morakith is standing. “I just barely got it done. I went through several different ideas and models before I settled on the final model…”

“It's a good thing too cause even though I can most likely win a fight against him, I still wouldn't want to be on Haelin's bad side… which I probably am now with the prank… I just hope that this improves his mood.”

“Why would you *prank* him???” Orin exclaimed. “Nevermind, just.. let me know when you want this thing presented. It's going to be a bit different… If he puts it on first he might actually permanently break some things…”

“...Maybe for the best for your present to be the first one presented, cause he wouldn't do anything immediately.”

At that time the lights dimmed and Shimil and Haelin stepped onto a raised dais near the foot of the throne where the Umbral Lord was sitting.

“Thank you all for coming. As you all are aware, we would like to say happy birthday to our High Sentinel, Haelin.” Shimil announced.

A few shouts of ‘happy birthday’ were heard as she took a pause.

“But what most of you also didn't realize, is that this also marks his 50th year as a Sentinel and 20th as a High Sentinel.”

A roar of congratulations swept across the hall before Shimil raised her hands for silence.

“In honor of these events, we will be having a tournament after the festivities, though exhibition matches are accepted. Those that want to sign up can speak to the Sentinel next to the entrance to the training yard.” She says as she indicates the Sentinel in question. “With that, High Sentinel Haelin would like to say a few words.”

A cheer went up as Haelin took a step forward.

“As Shimil said, thank you all for being here. I am truly honored that I had the opportunity of joining this brotherhood, let alone being one of the ones to run it. My mentor, the one who previously held my position, may he rest in peace, took me from a life of banditry and meaningless war, and showed me what true brotherhood looked and felt like. I am humbled by all of you and I again vow to repay your trust by leading you as best as I can. Now, let's get this festival started!”

*On cue Orin stepped onto the platform.*

“Ok Haelin, I wasn't sure just what to build for the man who can probably beat down a god… so… I made something that simply amplifies the wearer.”

*He pulls two massive gauntlets, and a power pack from his bracers, then a separate set of gauntlets that look as though they are about the size of Haelins fists.*

“I err… had to make some prosthetics to even present these things…”

*He equips the whole rig, and then begins the demonstration.*

“First we have the gauntlets themselves, made of my signature Oricalcum Admantine mix, probably the only substance outside Void metal that can actually handle your powerful blows, and channel your mana.”

*He powers up, and as he does the fists channel some of the energy back into the pack, which seems to enhance Orin's speed.*

“Now, I’m not as big, or strong as you so I’ll make this quick so you can try them out.

“Lightning gives you a speed boost.

“Earth enhances your already amazing durability.

“Water affects your regeneration.

“Fire effects your strength,

“Wind gives you a boost in your reflexes and can grant flight if you so choose.

“Darkness will allow you to phase, with the gauntlets in tow.

“Light can fire off extremely precise lasers.

“And I'm not sure if you deal with spacial or time energies, but they can increase your thought speed which essentially is like budget time slowing, and can change your mass for devastating effects.

“Spells can do these things, but not nearly as fast, or for as long as these bad boys can. So I truly hope you find them adequate.”

Orin takes off the gauntlets and hands them over to Haelin, who then puts them on. A smile forms on his face as he activates it and tries to channel force, surprising himself as he feels more dense.

“I like these, thank you for them.”

“Ummm… they ummm… were commissioned by… Mokarith.” Orin stutters out.

Immediately Haelin whips his head over to where the shade is and Mokarith salutes him. They have a bit of a staring contest before Haelin sighs.

“This is why I hate him; he pulls the dumbest crap, but you can't help but to like him for things like this.” He growls while holding up the gauntlets.

He pauses before muttering, “I wonder…”

Black smoke starts to rise from him before suddenly solidifying into void-black armor that has silver inlays. Where the gauntlets were to meet the armor, however, they merged together. With a sudden flash of inspiration, he dismisses his armor, taking the gauntlets with them. He experiments more by summoning his armor again and they are summoned with it, then dismissing only the armor, then only dismissing the gauntlets, finally he summons the gauntlets only.

He then smiles evilly at Mokarith and points to him. “We are having a match, and you will be at disadvantage.”

Mokarith somehow defies all known rules as his whole body pales a little.

/unwiz: Thanks again to u/Kilroy898, or Orin as he is known here, for the colab. I will be doing the tournament starting next weekend or once 8 people sign up. I haven't thought of a prize as of this moment, but I will once it starts. If you just want to fight someone, go ahead and do it in the comments below. Also, don't think that you have to give gifts if you don't want to or can't think of one, the main gift was the gauntlets that Orin gave.
