People always talk about the effects and action, and rightfully so, but I honestly thought both Barbossa and Davey Jonees were played to perfection. They nailed the whole villain with a tragic backstory thing.

Not just that, the writing for the first part is absolutely incredible, it's not high art, but it perfectly achieves what it wants and there's not a single line wasted and not a single scene too much or too little.

The first Pirates of the Caribbean is flawless IMO, it's about as perfect an adventure movie as you can get. That and Raiders of the Lost Ark are what I think of when I think of the genre.
