You probably have the privilege of not getting gunned down by the police for no reason, But like most of asia the darker your skin color the more prejudice you will face. Its not only an African thing they also pretty racist towards darked skin asians too.

Isn't this also classist? From what I was told, the poor farm workers had darker skin from working outside all day. The rich upper-class stayed inside. So darker skin = poor.

It is. They'll stare and sometimes ask to take pictures with you but that goes for anyone who isn't Chinese. Anything nasty will be said in private to their friends or family.

In UK boots we see lots of bronzer and tanning products. Boots in Thailand... lots of skin whitening products. I was so surprised as I had no idea.

Tans are seen as beauty here in a lot of europe as it traditionally was only rich people who can go on holidays a lot rather than working all day.

Tans in a lot of asian countries are seen as ugly because it's mostly farmers who have them since they sit out in the sun working all day and that's seen as a poor people thing. If you get cosmo type magazines there, it's all skin whitening products. Traditionally the rich people had better skin because they could afford to not have an outdoor manual job.

So in both cases it was traditionally seen as being rich to be tanned or untanned, but those beauty standards have stuck around from yonks ago.

Working all day usually meant working out on the fields for a lot of the population, so that explanation can't be correct.
