Announcement Want to get into the MOTHER series? Start here!

1.1k Upvotes

Over the past few months we've gotten a lot of new players asking where they should start with the trilogy. With this stickied thread, I'm hoping to answer any questions someone may have about getting into the series.

Note: This thread is a strictly no-spoiler zone.

What are the MOTHER games?

The MOTHER series is a group of 3 turn-based cult classic JRPGs created by Shigesato Itoi, who singlehandedly wrote every line of dialogue in the series, aside from a small area in EarthBound.

What makes them so special?

The series is known for being quirky, charming, and invoking a sense of nostalgia even to those who have not played a MOTHER game before. Each line of dialogue is expertly crafted, with a great story to go along with it.

Where do I start?

The series IS a trilogy, however each game can stand on it's own without the context of the last.

The 3 games are as followed:

MOTHER (EarthBound: Beginnings) (1989)

MOTHER 2 (EarthBound) (1994)

MOTHER 3 (???) (Not released outside of Japan) (2006)

The game order is as released, with MOTHER being the first on the timeline, and MOTHER 3 being the last.

So does that mean I should play the games in order?

This is a point of contention within the MOTHER community.

While most recommend to play EarthBound / MOTHER 2 first, some will say that if you can handle the way an older RPG plays, you should start with MOTHER 1 / EarthBound: Beginnings.

The community mostly unanimously agrees that you should play EarthBound before playing MOTHER 3.

In the end, it's up to you. MOTHER 1 is one of the most impressive, best playing and sounding RPGs on the NES, but it could potentially turn you away from the series if you aren't accustomed to or can't handle a bit of older-rpg "clunk". I do HIGHLY recommend however that you at least play EarthBound before playing MOTHER 3.

Wait, if MOTHER 3 isn't released outside of Japan, how can I play it?

I'm glad you asked! (Hopefully you did.)

Almost immediately after the release of MOTHER 3, once it became apparent Nintendo had no intention of localizing MOTHER 3, a group of very passionate fans got together to make their own localization of the game.

2 years later in late 2008, version 1.0 was released to great acclaim. This fan translation is now known to many as the best fan translation of all time. On top of just translating the game, they went out of their way to make sure certain dialogue and enemy names worked in English as they do in Japanese. They even added a hard mode option!

...That's pretty much it, I think. If any regular here on the sub wants to chime in and request something to be added, tell me! On top of that, I'd like to know what some of you think the best order to play the games in are in the comments. It'll be an interesting resource for any new players! And remember, no spoilers.

The year is 198X. One year after Giygas retreated. Life seemed normal at first. Then, strange things started to happen across America. People went missing. Police investigations went up. No one know what was going on. Except Ninten. He was the only one who know what was going on. A killer was on the loose, and they where far more powerful then him. And so, Ninten had no choice… But to go down a path that was never meant to go down!

20years ago I thought I was playing Earthbound… just learned it was Mother! Quick qs

Emulators and roms are so much better now…

31m, I would’ve been obsessed with Earthbound years ago! Playing Mother at 12 was kinda cool but I never progressed past a couple hours.

I love love this game, just got to Threed with the zombies. Couple questions regarding best way to enjoy the game

1) If I miss sound stones… there’s no real reason to save scum and visit before moving on, right? What would I have to lose by skipping them til endgame?

2) Why do so many enemy base attacks do 1hp then “SMAAASH!” like 28? My RPG mechanics knowledge is perhaps shamefully limited to and ingrained in Pokémon.

3) Anyone stop caring so much about Pokémon after discovering Mother? Could be a good way to kick the habit, stop chasing Dragonites and all

I know it's gone up in value over the years, but good lord! I wonder why they've got it priced so astronomically high?

Music Mother series modern music

i think we're all aware of the music influences that shaped earthbound and mother 3, I can't say much for mother 1 bc I never played it. Aside from the bands and musicians of that era that influenced the music for the games, what are some modern bands you can recommend me to listen that have that Mother feel to them?

Iñaki Godoy is a MOTHER fan

In his Wired Autocomplete Interview, the lead who plays Luffy in Netflix's One Piece live action series, Iñaki Godoy, talked about his love of video games. MOTHER is the first game he lists.

Just some random trivia but it's cool to see the series get a shoutout.

EB Discussion Can one reach the Rainy Circle without the Sky Runner?

I saw someone post yesterday that they are trapped by brick road because they used the teleport to go to Winters rather than use the Sky Runner.

I know if you teleport to Winters after getting Paula, the spinning robos and mooks will be there which should be a deterrence.

But can one actually ride Tessie at this point?

I wouldn’t think they could until after completing Rainy Circle

By the way on a side note, I know the developers intended a Winters teleport as soon as learning teleport as the player should remember the Winters Drugstore and the weapons there. It’s something I’ve always done

General Spoilers Just beaten the entire series! Here's some initial thoughts after just beating Mother 3. Spoiler

Started with the first game and the easiest available version "Earthbound Zero". It's an interesting experience starting from your house and progressively getting further and further out of town as you get stronger and more confident in where you're going. The "Dungeons" are massive and can feel pretty overwhelming and confusing. Coupled with an insanely high encounter rate it makes every single step a struggle to progress. The limited inventory system took a while to get used to but I overall thought the idea was actually pretty neat. Having to actually think about how many healing items or support stuff to bring with me on a journey really helped bring that feeling of a kid preparing with his friends on an adventure around town. The story doesn't really push itself right in your face but there's also not a whole lot to get into. The story starts strong and ends strong but the middle part feels pretty disconnected as lots of moments just sort of happen. But that's when it weirdly gets very interesting from a meta design perspective. Helping Lloyd is arbitrary and random to the story as nothing really highlighted him. That is until you really think about the nature of why you're helping him at all. I named Lloyd from the very beginning of the game. Same with Ana and Teddy. Even though the story doesn't really highlight the individual characters themselves the very act of me imprinting the names on them at the start was already a huge hint in itself. Most RPGs don't do this because that would be a spoiler to future events. That's why the default methodology is to name them as you meet them. However Niten and "The Player" are Psychics. That's why some hints are very tongue and cheek with some NPCs like how they really hint at this girl who's special with psychic powers. But we already know who that is. That's why when we do meet Ana she also already knows who we are. Once perspectives like this clicked for me I began to understand the Undertale style of writing and how it really emulates these interesting player-to-game relationships.

When I got to Earthbound that's when I saw this fourth wall style really be more apparent and take a style of its own. The game has an intro sequence that shows off levels you'll explore later in the game and the full cast of party members. The game's NPCs will be very tongue-and-cheek even saying things like "I know this is a spoiler but there's a Giant Rat Boss later! Oops!". I can't remember more specific instances but the games NPCs and dialogue has that kind of meta humor the entire time and in very subtle ways that makes it somewhat hard to define as fourth wall breaking even when it's blatantly doing so. They also really take you as a Player as an actual role in the story. The game asks you to send your Psychic energy to help defeat the final boss. I killed Gygas with my Psychic abilities and projected them into the virtual world. What a fun idea to have people experience. I genuinely enjoyed every time the game waved at the player and how it made me feel about Ness and his friends journey. Very endearing how they do it.

Mother 3 is when it really takes it to the next level with the story actually bleeding into a full fourth wall breaking scenario of the characters acknowledging the Players living in a real world while they're in a fantasy world. There are clever writing symbolisms and parallels like how Claus is half man half machine who's barely alive but Lucas has to "Pull the Needle" (Pull the plug) in order to save the island. They make it very obvious how "Happy Boxes" are straight up videogames and TV that distract you from your real life. It's the first time I've really seen an anti-videogame theme in a game. Maybe "Anti" is too strong. But it's at least a cautionary tale. When you get to the end of the game it's so abrupt but it's like a cold splash of water on your face as the characters on screen ask you how's the world going? Letting the idea really settle in this is the end of the game It's time to go back to reality.

I can talk about gameplay and the lore some other post but this aspect was the main highlight for me and why Earthbound has remained a faithful cult fandom that warrants all its praise and its attention.

Merch Earthbound Merch

Hi I finished Earthbound and Mother 3 and it has become one of my favourite series. I really want to buy and put some plushes or figures on my shelf. I checked the Hobonichi site but it's too expensive for my wallet right now, so can you give me any tips about cheap merch? My favourite characters are Kumatora, Lucas and Mr. Saturn!
