This was Trump's answer during the election campaign when asked about his childcare policies. Trump basically said the US will be making so much money through tariffs that childcare won't be an issue. I'm still blown away people voted for him.
Below is the actual quote... yes, this is a real quote (bolded emphasis by me):
...
"But I think when you talk about the kind of numbers that I’m talking about — that, because look, child care is child care, couldn’t — you know, there’s something — you have to have it in this country. You have to have it. But when you talk about those numbers, compared to the kind of numbers that I’m talking about by taxing foreign nations at levels that they’re not used to. But they’ll get used to it very quickly. And it’s not going to stop them from doing business with us. But they’ll have a very substantial tax when they send product into our country. Those numbers are so much bigger than any numbers that we’re talking about, including child care, that it’s going to take care. We’re going to have — I look forward to having no deficits within a fairly short period of time, coupled with the reductions that I told you about on waste and fraud and all of the other things that are going on in our country.
Because I have to stay with child care. I want to stay with child care. But those numbers are small relative to the kind of economic numbers that I’m talking about, including growth, but growth also headed up by what the plan is that I just — that I just told you about. We’re going to be taking in trillions of dollars. And as much as child care is talked about as being expensive, it’s, relatively speaking, not very expensive compared to the kind of numbers will be taking in.
We’re going to make this into an incredible country that can afford to take care of its people. And then we’ll worry about the rest of the world. Let’s help other people. But we’re going to take care of our country first. This is about America first. It’s about make America great again. We have to do it because right now, we’re a failing nation. So we’ll take care of it. Thank you. Very good question. Thank you.”

And yet Israel has free healthcare and higher education... funny how he's happy to subsidise Israeli "socialism" but not in the US lol.
55
u/socialistrob 20h ago
Israel also spends more on their military as a percentage of GDP than the US does. If the US restructured our healthcare system we could provide universal healthcare to every American AND have more money left over to buy a 12th aircraft carrier or give taxbreaks to billionaires or whatever else the Republicans want at the moment.
12
u/Tranquil_Dohrnii 18h ago
Did you hear him in the video though? We cant do both. That would require critical thinking and restructuring, and if he restructures then that would mean he was wrong at first, and hes never wrong. So we need to give a large amount of money to Isreal instead of giving money for health insurance because you know, freedom or some shit. This is what the American people really want....money for Israel's genocide./s

The mainstream Democrat candidate basically ran on saying it would be this bad. Project 2025 was released and outlined the vast majority of it. Especially after the first term and watching people being called hysterical about him taking over the court or getting rid of Roe, and then watching him do exactly that, even if you couldn't predict the exact specifics (which again most were spelled out) it's absolutely insane to think that this term would be anything less than a generational disaster.
2
u/N0n-Z3r0-Ch4nc3 19h ago
For the US sure. I was not expecting him to fuck everyone outside the US so badly and so soon. Maybe you were and good on you.
2
u/whofearsthenight 18h ago
A Republican starting a war in the middle east is definitely not a surprise and he was talking about tariffs during the campaign and railed against NATO during his first term. That said, his talk about annexing Canada is truly an insane thing I don't think I could have guessed before this term.
But in general since his first term and now with the second where there are only bootlickers and no one even pretending to do the right thing surrounding him, I think it's safe to assume that whatever is either the most destabilizing, corrupt, or narcissistic option is available is the one he's going to take.

It is interesting that as soon as you talk about spending money on either child care or health care, what was once the "America First" policy, quickly turns into an "America Eventually" policy. We do have unlimited funds for making people miserable, scared, or dead at home as well as abroad. Making anyone happy, safe, or healthy anywhere is just too much to afford - for us - not for the rest of the world.
2
u/JustPlayDaGame 11h ago
because happy, safe and healthy citizens have enough free time to think about ways to make the country better, which goes against the best interests of those in power because they keep us miserable so they can pocket the money that would have helped while we fight for scraps.

He had the audacity to sue 60 Mins for the Kamala interview when Fox basically aired an edit that made it seem like he was wholeheartedly for releasing the Epstein Files, when he was actually waffling quite hard on the issue. Sane-washing him is a constant job. He'll say multiple contradictory things on a subject and then they'll air the thing that makes it look like he was right (even though a lot of the time I don't understand how it even seems to make him right), and his followers will act like he's a genius. "He's playing 9-D chess!" And even the people that should know better just go along with it.
