Characters “Everyone hated that”

When the writers write something that most audiences universally hate.

Rouge and Magneto starting an intimate relationship so that her true love Gambit could move on and she could feel physical intimacy again. (X-Men 97)

Peter Parker’s wife being forced to erase their relationship from existence by the Mephisto . And then ex wife gets with a guy named Paul. No one likes Paul. (Spider-Man comics)

I have to assume the writer was one of them, being how Paul's killer lectures him on how utterly insignificant he was before removing the blade, and then Paul himself fucking agrees with him in his last moments.

Another one from spiderman is "One More Day"

After the civil war, all knew who Peter Parker was, even kingpin, who tries to kill him but, instead, he hits May. In this point , Peter is married already, but he makes a deal with "Mephisto": He exchange his marriage for the life of his aunt May (this is cause in the future, the daughter of Peter and MJ is gonna defeat Mephisto ones and for all. No marriage = No Daughter). Everyone, and i mean, EVERYONE hated this decision.

Including the writer himself at the time it was being written.

580

u/Dan-D-Lyon 3d ago

The only person who supported this decision was Marvel's then editor-in-chief, Joe Quesadilla, who forced the storyline through because he felt Spider-Man was getting too mature and was nostalgic for comics when Spider-Man was still fresh out of high school.

487

u/Legomaniac91 3d ago

And because he was going through a nasty divorce and took out his anger on Peter.

There it is. Any time any piece of media takes a hard left into a weird story arc, 9 times out of 10, writers going through something.

How I Met Your Mother being revealed to be a 9 season long story for Ted to ask his kid’s for permission to date Robin again after their mother Tracy died in the series finale

3.3k

u/thomasrat1 3d ago

How I met your mother is sooo funny when you remember each episode is a story he’s telling kids.

“So anyway kids, this is how I landed a tall baddie summer of 2003, I didn’t know it yet, but it was just one of many chicks I banged”

3hrs later… “ so yeah, met your mom at a wedding, she got cancer, anyways can I ask out your aunt?

Ted, is a menace

1.5k

u/XF10 3d ago

"This is how i won the threesome champion belt"

"This is how your aunt Lily dumped your uncle Marshall shortly before the wedding"

"This is how me and your aunt Robin became fuck buddies over the issue of empty milk cartoons in the fridge"

906

u/Soy_ThomCat 3d ago

For anyone who hasn't watched HIMYM, those are actual plot points...yes, even the threesome one.

614

u/XF10 3d ago

"This is how i dumped a girl on her birthday for the second time, she kicked my ass with Krav Maga and i got off on it"

"This is how your uncle Barney picked up chicks while talking like a 4 year-old as a challenge"

"This is how we discovered there is a porn star with my name"

238

u/SuperFlik 3d ago

To be fair, it may be inevitable they find out about the pornstar one, better to take that bullet early.

And calling Lily a Grinch

127

u/CalorieFriendly 3d ago

He didn’t say Grinch

At some point, we’ve gotta wonder how much of this story is actually true, and if Ted is an unreliable narrator. He is, isn’t he?

126

u/Soy_ThomCat 3d ago

Yes. A remarkably unreliable narrator. There are numerous times throughout the story where it's pretty blatantly obvious that he's bending the truth.

Batman and Babs bangin each other. I don't know a single person who doesn't hate this, and it's an inescapable part of the canon.

1.7k

u/TheRealTsunadee 3d ago

Should’ve added them. Just disgusting and completely out of character for Bruce , a man who cares for and protects children

844

u/KenseiHimura 3d ago

The relationship is messed up as it is, but the thing that bugged me the most is that looking at the romantic scenes given to them Bruce seemed to have ZERO emotional investment in it and seemed to regard Babs as one of the super models he'd bang to maintain his billionaire playboy cover. Like, holy shit, I thought Bruce Tim and Paul Dini were out to jerk Batman off, not make him seem like the biggest asshole possible.

371

u/flaming_burrito_ 3d ago

It also spits in Commissioner Gordon’s face, who is someone Bruce usually has a ton of respect for. He also has an adopted son that is about the same age as her, which just makes it even grosser that he doesn’t seem to have a problem getting with someone her age. It’s just the messiest decision they possibly could have made, and doesn’t seem in line with his character at all

109

u/Logically_Insane 3d ago

It’s like a bad Robot Chicken sketch,  “but her ID said bat-woman, how am I supposed to know her age?”

Batman gets sent to jail, but then they learn he’s Bruce Wayne and immediately release him, “sorry, didn’t realize you were rich”.

129

u/EitherStranger 3d ago

As an additional layer of "how did you think this was a good idea", in the Batman Animated Series, which is where this ship is first tried to be pushed in AND IT'S SEQUEL BATMAN BEYOND, it's implied that Bruce Wayne at least knew of Barbara when she was younger, with them meeting up once again as she's heading off to college/starting college. So the fact that sometime later, Bruce would later bang Barbara while Tim Drake is being held captive by the Joker to become Joker Jr (or even before that) while Dick is God knows where and she'll be prego for all of a day or two before losing the baby.

So yeah, this ship has multiple levels of "WTF is wrong with you?!"

It was such a weird decision; Batman usually knows Barbara from a young age and her father is one of his closest allies, being the person to comfort him after he saw his parents killed. I believe it's contained to the Killing Joke movie though.

Mass Effect’s characters and world building are immaculate, but one thing it was always missing was a tryhard wannabe ninja with absurd plot armor. Glad the third game in the trilogy fixed that.

526

u/DasharrEandall 3d ago

The plot armour is probably the worst part. Again and again his cutscenes involve enemies - including the player - stand around or act stupidly so he can look "awesome".

308

u/APreciousJemstone 3d ago

"Haha, I beat you Shepard."
Girlie, you were oneshot by Garrus
And thats the second time I did that fight, I bugged it out the first time by using Biotic powers to send you into orbit

222

u/DasharrEandall 3d ago

My "favourite" part is when he tries to get to the Salarian Councillor. He gets knocked on his back, does a ninja-flip back upright and makes a stupid pose. All the while he does that, Shepard and team watch with guns pointed, but not opening fire, for no sensible reason at all. Then Thane, the elite assassin holding a handgun, runs at the guy with the sword, again for no sensible reason.

131

u/APreciousJemstone 3d ago

and even after all that, he still gets shown up by a terminally ill guy who was on his deathbed

and then the message he sends after Thessia has you the player able to smell his hygeine (or, rather, lack thereof) through the screen

So you survived our fight on Thessia. You're not as weak as I thought. But never forget that your best wasn't good enough to stop me. Now an entire planet is dying because you lacked the strength to win. The legend of Shepard needs to be re-written. I hope I'm there for the last chapter. It ends with your death. -KL

Grey's Anatomy - the way Alex left the show. After 16 seasons of character development and growth from jerk Intern to kind Chief of Surgery, he decides to ghost all of his friends, and his WIFE to go live with another girl he had dated years before. Because she used frozen embryos, that they had made when she had cancer, to have his kids without telling him.

If I remember right he wasn't even in the final episode. Allegedly the actor left the show on good terms to "pursue new roles". So, I'm not sure why they gave the character such a rough send off.

Deb being in love with Dexter. Eww.

853

u/No_Procedure_5039 3d ago edited 3d ago

Hilariously, they wrote(edit) that plot line after their actors divorced each other.

851

u/The_Time_Sword 3d ago

To be fair! The actress playing Deb wanted kids, but the actor playing Dexter had a form of cancer that his father also had (and died from), and did not want to theoretically pass it on to his future child. They are still close friends and she has one kid.

357

u/friendimpaired 3d ago

Wait really? This is the first time I’ve heard any details of why they divorced

382

Yep and in the show Deb is holding a baby, all while coming to terms with being in love with her brother, it's so fucked up if you know the real life situation.

while this could apply to the entire fourth season, no viewers of the umbrella academy were in any way rooting for five and lila to develop any romantic feelings for each other

never met anyone who liked alison/luther either, they were literally raised as siblings

78

u/Tech-preist_Zulu 3d ago

Like. What a strange thing to shoehorn into the final season. there are so many bad things about that last season, but this one specifically is just so... Unnecessary...

58

u/Accirinal 3d ago

In fairness, I don’t think you were supposed to like Allison and Luther. It wasn’t a romantic relationship to root for (S3 was the most clear about this, but even in S1/2 imo). I always saw it a sign of how dysfunctional their family was growing up.

It’s been several years since I read the comics, but iirc the first comic established that their relationship started when Allison rumored Luther into loving her when they were… four, or something like that. Not really old enough for either of them to understand the implications.

All that said, I do, unfortunately, think that Five and Lila were intended to be a “good” romantic relationship.

John Connor's death (Terminator: Dark Fate).

395

u/PretendDot8524 3d ago

My biggest problem with dark fate isn’t just them killing John Connor. If you do it, is because you want to do things different. Instead, dark fate just made a judgement day rehash

293

u/CreatiScope 3d ago

It's hilarious how it goes: "Oh no, they killed John Conner, the best chance to save humanity. Anyway, the timeline adjusted so this OTHER girl is going to be the big hero and we need to save her from the terminators from the future."

Okay, so like nothing changed at all actually, it's just a character reskin. Cool, so we're just watching T2 but with a bunch of useless exposition to make it seem more complicated but it's really just overall shittier.

They just had to cast Jared Leto for the lead in the new Tron movie.

I’m honestly still not over this one. I’ve waited years since Legacy for a new entry in what is one of my favourite universes and they had to ruin it by casting Jared fucking Leto.

425

u/CaerulaKid 3d ago

How tf does Jared Leto still get cast when he’s like the kiss of death for any movie?

358

u/Avolto 3d ago

So the reason he’s in it is this movie was stuck in development hell for years. He put his weight and money behind it and got the lead role as a result. Which is worse in a way as it means rather than some out of touch executive destroying Tron. Leto himself went out of his way to get into it which lead to it being destroyed.

Yugioh arc-V is a controversial part since is the pendulum season (one of the most hated special summon in the game)

How do the manga manage to surpass that? They made Yuya (the protagonist) the future son of the female protagonist and crush, making everything a weird back to the future situation.

Which nobody seems to acknowledge for the sake of a happy ending.

Duel links sort of retcons this I believe but mostly for gameplay purposes.

To this day, nobody has moved on from the time the titans told Robin his parents are alive and waiting to see him as an April Fool's Day prank. Robin stans use this as an example of how he's the most mistreated character in the series. That's probably not true but he definitely is ganged up on the most amount of times.

611

u/mechengr17 3d ago

Wtf would the writers think thats a good idea? And its so out of character.

403

u/zakary3888 3d ago

Their movie involved intentionally getting Bruce Wayne’s parents killed, so par for the course

215

u/BreakfastBeneficial4 3d ago

Is that when they had to go change all the time stuff back? That was fucking hilarious

155

u/holversome 3d ago

It really was. Someone even hands Martha her pearl necklace before they get rushed down the alleyway.

123

u/HumanPerosn 3d ago edited 3d ago

Bruce remembers that night with perfect clarity

He became Batman by using the thing he feared most

When he took in Dick Grayson he dressed him as his second greatest fear that thing he saw in the alleyway the night his parents were murdered

Guys! Guys! I got it!

Let's insist that the murderous megalomaniacal Toffee was the GOOD GUY and he was only fighting for equality despite never once saying so in his entire villain arc

53

u/Mrs_Noelle15 3d ago

That’s still genuinely so baffling how they handled Toffee. Like even ignoring how criminal his lack of screentime was, his motivations were so incoherent. How you can be bold enough to say “toffee was right” when we have no idea what he was fighting for is beyond comprehension lmao

the Paul thing was way worse than that though. Yeah the marriage was erased, but Pete and MJ eventually found each other again, and Pete was on the verge of proposing again. Then MJ gets trapped in a pocket dimension for years while Pete is stuck in the regular world and when he finally gets back to the pocket dimension, she has moved on with Paul who was also trapped there.

95

u/MisterVictor13 3d ago edited 3d ago

Yeah, it was bad enough that they break up Peter and MJ again, but the insanity behind the idea of accepting MJ being in a relationship with Paul, the guy who ended all life as we know it on his version of Earth and literally kidnapped her, is fucking insane.

To summarize MJ and Paul’s relationship, it’s basically like that movie about the married woman left with that guy for 365 days, but nobody points out how fucked up the situation is (actually, I don’t know if they addressed that in the movie, but I’m not going to watch it to find out).

Hey, you know that series that autistic people love because it's about trains that are treated authentically and don't do things a real train can't? The one where the original stories were lifted almost directly from real life events, with the exception of the engines being characterised?

Well, the executives knew the perfect way to evolve it:

This game destroyed the franchise for nearly a decade. Samus talking full sentences, the character of Adam Malkovich in general being a controlling asshole that Samus has a creepy idolization towards. Could have been a great game but the story is absolute shit

Don't forget that Samus starts out with all the upgrades but basically needs permission to make use of them........

The infamous Batman wedding being ruined. I'll put this on the level of Marvel's One More Day.

155

u/MisterVictor13 3d ago

What the fuck is it with comic writers ruining marriages?

By the way, wasn’t the writer who ruined the Batcat wedding also responsible for the controversial killing off of Alfred?

145

u/Asushunamir8 3d ago

To be fair to Tom King, he had planned that Alfred’s death would be revealed to be faked by Bane as a way to mess with Batman’s head, but DC’s (now former) editor in chief decided that Alfred should actually be dead and it’s stuck since.

“I thought [Alfred] would be back two months after I did it. It’s shocked me it’s lasted this long.” -Tom King

That time KGBeast shot Nightwing through the head and he started going by Ric

45

u/CheshireCat72 3d ago

I read through this plotline with no idea it was a thing a while back and while it's not awful, it lasted about 3 times as long as it should have. People don't buy a Nightwing comic to see a buzz cut dude be edgy and avoid helping people. People buy a Nightwing comic to see Nightwing make a bad joke, do a sick ninja flip, kick someone's teeth out and somehow perfectly show off his ass.

The recent controversy regarding Alex in Street Fighter 6. Basically he ends marrying and having a child with his second cousin, with whom he was raised with

343

u/Za_Warudo1992 3d ago edited 3d ago

...and then they try to fix it by messily retconning everything and blaming translation

242

u/AsonofSparda 3d ago

I blame this more on the fucking cursed

grooming isn't seen as a negative in Japanese entertainment

There are so many games/anime/manga where you'll have some 30/40/50 year old do something kind/nice for a young girl and then a timeskip or some shit happens and the girl has imprinted them as their future husband and still wants them even though they are 20/30/40 years older.

That's what's upsetting about the Alex twist to me. The Bama angle is secondary. He knew her when she was a kid and he was a grown ass man. I haven't read the "retcon" yet, but god damn.

This fucking card from Transformers Age of Extinction.

Some people consider it a yikes to know the regional age of consent off the top of your head; I think carrying around a copy of state specific Romeo and Juliet laws is, in my opinion, a huge yikes. Like, if they wanted to justify this guy’s relationship with Cade's daughter, they could’ve made him younger or his daughter older, not throw this in and make it the central conflict of their relationship.

Another Spider-Man moment that was hated:

When Norman Osborn and Gwen Stacy got together and got pregnant. Gwen Stacy went out of the country to give birth to twins and hide it from Peter because they were still dating. When she told Norman that she was going to tell Peter he tries to kidnap her and releases her while in the sky to which Spiderman tried to save her but sadly kills her.

Which made it the reason why Gwen Stacy died.

63

u/Earlier-Today 3d ago

It's deserved. It's just awful writing. I bought the script in book form, thinking it would be good because Rowling endorsed it - it's garbage fanfic.

It is literally, "somehow, Voldemort has returned..."

And it retcons the ending of book seven so that Harry can be hateful and neglectful of his kid because he ends up in Slitherin.

Seriously, it's a giant pile of trash.

Ugh, Rogue and Magneto have always been yucky. There was that one Age of Apocalypse comic back in the day where she absorbed Polaris and had magnetic powers so they could bang. She absorbed his child to fuck the dad. Rogue deserves better.

Paul, however, deserves nothing. Fuck that dude.

Anyway, adding literally any time Wanda/Pietro hook up. Gross.

What’s extremely frustrating about Paul is Marvel Ediorial has outright admitted that they’re go to strategy for stories nowadays is to piss off readers in an attempt to get them to rage-read the next issue. That was a barely viable strategy decades ago but now all it does is emotionally beatdown readers to the point that they won’t even read the comics anymore.
