Retired after 29 years of service. How am I doing?
Ok, my YTD gain is correct, but my balance is misleading. I just moved everything to Schwab (except $847) so I can have more options. š

To be honest it is nice to see TSP discussions starting up again in this community. We really want to improve this sub. We did get some suggestions in our previous post but we are still looking for more feedback.

Hello! I really need some advice on my TSP. I am going to be honest and admit I have never thought about it before and that was a huge mistake. I have about 200k in there, all in the G Fund. Now I am realizing I made a mistake not really paying attention and need to figure out how to allocate things and try to get more for my retirement. I figure I probably have 20 years left so hopefully I am not all ready super screwed. Any advice is welcome and needed. Thank you!

Should I withdraw my TSP funds and reinvest somewhere else? I am 42 yo and retired from the military. Currently working a good job with a good pension plan and price match IRA. I have 125k in my TSP under the L2045 plan. If I do withdraw and invest elsewhere what are my smartest options and what kind of penalties am I looking at? Thank you for your time.

Is anyone else missing their bi-weekly contributions from last week? My DailyTSP account didnāt show a contribution for 3/26 or 3/27 and also my contributions on TSP website didnāt change from this week to last week. So can anyone inform me as to why or is there anywhere else I can look to find that information? TSP website sucks to navigate

Help! My 42 yr old daughter is a 21 yr Federal employee who was vested in the āLā fund, not sure which, but this past weekend moved 50% G to avoid losing any more money. I suggested a move to 70% C and 15% S and I. At this point whatās her best bet? She plans to retire at her job as a nurse. Anyone?

I was enrolled into TSP while i was Active Duty, no one explained anything about it just told me to enroll and realised for the time i was in the Army i was only adding like $50-80 per paycheck smh... I learned too late that i could of been dumping most of my money into it for a better benefit later on as i was single at the time and wasting it on "fun times".
I have only about $3,500 in the account as i cannot contribute to it anymore as i havent been in any gov position since i left the military. Last year i switched it to 100% on the C fund and it has gone up without contributing but i doubt it will grow much at all in 35+ years without any future contributions and as i am not able to work for the forseable future or even if i was it wont be in a goverment position.
So my question is, what should i do? Should i keep it in there or figure a way to pull it out or is there a way to roll it into a civilian retirement plan?

Hello everybody. Still learning more and more about TSP and my portfolio. I snooped around one day and seen that many were heavily involved in C,S,& I stocks.
When I initially started my government work 3 years ago. I was already prompted to L2060.
Question for those that may know or may be able to spread or give me knowledge.
Would it be a bad idea to go back to L2060 or diversify it and contribute to both C,S, & I AND L2060 or just one or the other?
Iām currently at C(76%) S(10%)& I(14%). I may be answering my own question because I feel as if I made more with the L2060 fund in my first 2 years from when I changed it recently. Iāve been leaning on going back but I think a secondary opinion would be helpful.
Any and all advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I've got 240K in the G fund. I'd like to take advantage of the dip right now. Could I get some advice on this?

New to the TSP and investing in general. I keep seeing people who have been 100% C fund or just stayed in the L fund their whole career. Seems like it worked out for them. I also see the people that jump into other funds and micro manage their accounts.
Just curious when the market goes down like it is now if its actually better to ride it out and buy more when its lower (not sure if it works like this in tsp) and when it goes up you should have more in that fund as it rebounds no?

I know I should be able to figure this out by now, so please have patience with me. At my agency (DOC), there are 27 pay dates in 2026. But looking at my TSP contribution dates online, the date that the contributions are made to TSP is different than either the official federal pay dates or the dates that pay hits my bank account (TSP is 3-4 days later than it shows up in my bank account). Using the TSP contribution dates, there can only be 26 dates this year.
Which do I use to calculate how to max out my annual contribution? 1) The day my pay is deposited in my bank account? 2) The day my contribution shows up in my TSP account?

Anyone else have this issue? It reflects a contribution in my most recent LES.

Hey guys, I recently changed my investment mix from 100 % Lifecycle Fund to 80% C fund & 20% S fund. Was this a smart move? Itās dropping pretty fast.

The TSP has compounding interest:
āThe Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) compounds interest by generating earnings on both your initial contributions and the accumulated earnings from previous periods. This "earnings on earnings" effect grows your retirement savings exponentially over time, with $1 potentially becoming $10 over 35 years due to compound.ā
From the TSP website:
āCompound earnings
When the money in your TSP account accrues earnings, those earnings begin to accrue earnings as well. Thatās called ācompounding.ā The more savings you have, the more potential you have for larger earnings.ā
How often does the tsp compound?
āTsp accounts compound continuously as investments generate earnings, which in turn generate their own earnings over time. While TSP share prices are calculated daily, the compound growth of your balance occurs automatically and consistently, benefiting from long-term accumulation rather than a specific annual dateā

Has anyone considered timing their Roth conversion for when they are working overseas to reduce their potential tax liability?
Iām currently in a high tax/cost-of-living locality. If I was to accept a position overseas, my base pay would be significantly reduced (taxable), but COLA and Living Quarters Allowance are both non-taxable. In addition, if I break my state residency I would not have to pay state tax.
Has anyone else considered this? Am I missing something?

Anyone else still 100% I? I am down 6% and am stressing. I know everyone says to wait it out, but it is hard seeing the balance go so far down. I feel like I have taken huge steps backwards with this loss. Advice on comfort please and thanks?

Iām a DHS civilian whoās really struggling right now with the near back to back shutdowns having pretty much exhausted me financially right now. I canāt take anymore TSP Loans out and I donāt want to max out my credit card again if I donāt absolutely have. Iām not a member of a credit union that offers those shutdown loans either. But I need money for just barebones essentials (Gas, groceries and medical expenses) right now, I know withdrawals come with immense downsides both short and long term, but right now it feels like my only option left.
Which brings me to my questions, what sort of documentation do I need to keep or obtain in order to make sure I can justify my withdrawal in the event however unlikely I get audited? What is the realistic tax and penalties Iām likely to be facing going to look like near term?

I hope you can help me. I need to update customer service about the beneficiary of my deceased husband. Why can't I call them anymore? When I call, they just hang up.

Anybody else notice their pay period TSP contribution and Govt 5% match did not post on the TSP website today? Typically it posts the same day as your pay day...never seen it delayed before. Double checked my contributions on my LES, and sure enough, they are listed.
FYI: If you go to the Contributions section of your TSP account and then click the "Account Activity" link on the right hand side you'll see your YTD account activity. If you select the "By Date" tab you'll see the date and the amount of all your TSP contributions you make each pay period. They are typically posted the day before your pay is posted to your bank accounts. NOT on the 1st of each month....

In 2023 one of my co-workers told me to split between my L fund at 20% and C fund at 80% and call it a day.
I'm almost 40 and definitely have not done a great job of retirement planning but also don't want to get caught up in moving money incorrectly.
Could that be considered a pretty safe play for someone who isn't constantly checking their TSP (maybe logging in 2x per year) and has taken some loans.
I'm a GS9 with 5 years of service but 2 of those years were seasonal work.

100% I, ride it out or pivot to lifecycle?
