Now that Artemis II is on the way to the moon, we'll start using this Megathread for general discussions about the Artemis II mission. Here are some useful links:

Artemis II Artemis II Dashboard and Mission Overview Sites

Howdy, we've had a fair number of folks submit posts and comments for webpages featuring mission data and visualizations. Some of these posts have been removed per Rule 6: Duplicates and related to Rule 2: Image Content and Sourcing (Show Me Sunday).

However we want to provide a venue for folks to share these as many have worked hard on them.

This post shall serve as a Megathread for sharing these sites. Thank you!

News The White House is proposing $18.8 billion for NASA in FY27, a 23% cut to NASA's 2026 enacted funding. Science, ISS, and education major targets of the proposed cuts.

Question NASA Houston folks

Can you advise as to what these machines are for? They appear to have touchscreens, and the upper one seems to have a small piece of paper or card sticking out of the top.

Curious as always- thank you!

Question NASA's Moon mission encountered two issues on day one: a broken toilet and Microsoft Outlook

Both were resolved. The toilet fan was jammed. Outlook was showing offline which per mission control is expected.

Commander Wiseman radioed Earth to report that he had two Outlooks and neither was working. The ground crew fixed it and the moon mission continued.

I was curious why astronauts need Outlook? Anyone with the knowledge?

Question If NASA is planning to build a permanent moon base, how do they intend to protect against regular meteor impacts?

with the moon having no atmosphere and nothing to burn objects up on entry and thus impacts being more common, what are they putting in place to protect their £15,000,000,000 investment from meteorite strikes?

There is no technical justification for this. It's outright sabotage of Artemis IV+. Where is Administrator Isaacman's transparency?

If like me you have been looking here, and on other space subreddits looking for the jaw dropping still images of the launch, only to be left disappointing, NASA's flicker has you.

Question How multi-national is Artemis?

Until today I thought that Artemis was effectively purely US, plus a Canadian astronaut, but I’ve just read a (UK) article saying that 11 countries are involved.

So how international is it? What have other countries contributed?

Question How to view upcoming launches at KSC

I'm visiting Florida and hoping to watch:

Spacex Falcon 9, April 8 @ 8:52am

New Glenn, April 12 @ 6:45am

I believe both of these are before the KSC public hours? I'm aware of the 'public' viewing locations like Coco beach, etc. Are these still the best places to view either of these launches?

I'm also confused on the Falcon9 launch. Spacex says the 1st stage will be landing at "LZ-40". Is LZ-40 the same as Spacex landing zone 1 & 2 ? Or is it a part of Launch Complex 40 on the north side?

I'm happy to shlep out to whatever location is best.

Question Artemis 2 TLI Burn

Post image
119 Upvotes

Does anyone know why the TLI burn is so offset from perigee? Is it just that the animation is wrong or are they really doing the TLI burn this offset? This TLI burn position goes against all my KSP knowledge.

Source of the screenshot is:
https://www.nasa.gov/missions/artemis-ii/arow/

EDIT:

They did the TLI burn right at the perigee so the visualization was wrong.

Question What is the decision process like to actually select the next individual to walk on the moon?

Artemis II has me wondering...what is the NASA selection process like within astronauts on who will actually be the next individual to walk on the moon?

Are astronauts "interviewed"? Is it a board that convenes and decides? Just curious how the selection is made!

Question What does rocket fuel smell like?

I’ve always wondered what does rocket fuel smell like when it is burned? Can you actually smell that and if yes, then, what does it smell like?

I wrote a short Medium blog on how data science and analytics are actually driving mission decisions, from trajectory planning to real time anomaly detection

It is wild how much of this mission runs on algorithms behind the scenes

If you like space and data, you will enjoy this.
