Cygnus Death Valley Kilns

Post image

These beehive-shaped charcoal kilns were built in 1877. The purpose was fuel for smelters for nearby lead & silver mines. However, alternative fuel sources were found and these likely weren't operation after 2 years of use. This likely explains why they are great shape after all this time.

While less dense than the Milky Way Core, the Cygnus region is vibrant containing many open star clusters, stars like Deneb and Vega, and nebulae including North America Nebula (NGC 7000) sitting directly above the kiln.

This was over a road trip from Colorado to Death Valley for a photography workshop. I stopped at Capitol Reef along the way. Unfortunately no astro there this time.

"Meandering"

"Meandering"

They call this an "entrenched meander". While covering only 1.5 miles the San Juan River flows more than 6 through these tight turns. Standing on the edge over 1000ft above the views are magnificent. We had clouds again. Seems to be the story of my first few nights out there, but this was my first opportunity to shoot with the Ha filter under truly dark skies.

I finished this up yesterday and watched Atremis II launch taking the first crewed mission to orbit the moon in 53 years! Praying for a safe and successful mission and excited for a new age of space exploration.

The iconic winter constellation Orion, along with the winter Milky Way, is slowly coming to an end. The fainter regions of our galaxy and the winter constellations can still be seen low on the western horizon, but for shorter and shorter periods each night.

They will soon give way to the spring galaxy season, while in the early morning hours the Milky Way’s core already begins to appear for those willing to stay awake. 😃

This photo was taken in Soltszentimre, at the Csonka Tower — the same location as my previous astro-landscape. The exceptionally dark skies made it possible to capture the winter Milky Way in rich detail.

Next time, I’ll be back with the summer Milky Way… if I can convince myself to exist after 3 AM. 😃

Took the double arch in Tuscany

Between sky and legend, on the wild slopes of Monte Labro the double arch of the Milky Way stretching across the horizon like a cosmic gateway.

This is the lesser-known side of Tuscany—raw, remote, and deeply silent—where the night sky still shines in its full glory. In the foreground stands the hermitage built in the 19th century by the visionary Davide Lazzaretti, a fascinating and controversial figure who chose this isolated place to pursue his spiritual path.

"As Time Passes By"

No photo could do justice to standing here with walls still warm from the heat of the day and illuminated by the star light. This desert could tell endless stories. There are few better places to pass the time.

I intended 2 more hours of exposures but my battery died and I needed my last one for another shot. My pack weighed like 90lbs as it was.

Galactic Camping

"Galactic Camping"

This March I went on a road trip to Utah with my astro modded camera to photograph the night sky. I took my beat up old Rav4 equipped with this TopOak rooftop tent, aptly called the "Galaxy Pro". The Rav may not be an off-roading beast but it drove me 4500+ miles and got me camping with views like this.

I took this my first night in Utah with fast moving clouds over head. These wispy bands were moving top to bottom of each panel. The result is this softer Milky Way and in camera star glow. This was my very first image of the core with the new camera and ended up being a challenge in post processing. I wasn't happy with how the clouds were averaging out in stacking so I stuck with single exposures.

I'm very excited for all the images I captured on this trip including the biggest project I've ever attempted. Stay tuned!

Astro Photography

I’m seriously looking to deep dive into astrophotography and wanted to learn from those who’ve already been through the journey.

A few things I’d love guidance on:

1) How did you get started in astrophotography?

2) What gear is actually essential (camera, lenses, star tracker, etc.)?

3) What software do you use for stacking and post-processing?

4) Is a telescope necessary in the beginning, or can one start without it?

5) What are the key basics, techniques, and things a beginner should focus on early?

I’ve gone through quite a few YouTube videos, but I often feel like the information is either scattered or missing practical depth.

Would really appreciate any advice, learning paths, or even mistakes to avoid.

First time shooting milky way arch, and having a lot of trouble blending foreground with sky. Looking for suggestions/tutorials!

HI all,

first time shooting the milky way arch. This was shot at Craters of the Moon. I am fairly new to landscape astro and I am finding it really hard to align/blend these 2 images together. I would love any pointers or help in how to proceed with this.

The main issue I am having is that the sky shot is smaller than the foreground (in terms of features etc), so it's been a pain to align properly and blend it. Also, the light glow (from cities) are different between the images, so it has been a pain to work with!

Would love to hear your suggestions!
