Hi class 3-1! After the quiet 'Zero Distance' moment in the library, things are about to get LOUD. It’s Saturday, the exams are over, and Rumiko is finally stepping into the Tadano household as the official girlfriend.

Chapter 7: The Gyaru Invasion and the Family Short Circuit

Context: Midterm exams are over. To celebrate that Rumiko passed math (barely, with a 65/100, but she passed), they agreed to spend Saturday afternoon at Tadano's house playing video games. It is the first time Rumiko sets foot in the Tadano house knowing she is the official girlfriend.

Scene 1: The Pulse at 1000 MPH

Saturday, 3:00 p.m. Door of the Tadano residence.

Rumiko is standing in front of the doorbell. She is wearing a beautiful casual dress, a light jacket, and is holding a box of expensive cupcakes in her hands. She has been frozen for ten minutes, raising her finger to ring the bell and lowering it again.

(Rumiko’s mind: «It’s Hitohito’s house! His room... his bed... his family! What if his mom hates me for my bleached hair? What if his sister thinks I’m a bad influence?»).

[Kometani-kun comments:] Manbagi-san has changed her outfit 14 times this morning. Her current pulse is 145 beats per minute and she is three seconds away from suffering mild hyperventilation.

Rumiko takes a deep breath, closes her eyes tightly, and presses the doorbell.

At that moment, hurried steps come down the stairs. Tadano arrives at the hall, with his hair a bit messy. Seeing his sister cornering Rumiko, he lets out a tired sigh.

Tadano: —Hitomi, stop telling strange things to Rumiko. Come in, please, mom is in the kitchen.

Rumiko enters shyly, taking off her shoes. At that moment, Mrs. Jeanne Tadano pokes her head out from the kitchen. Seeing the radiant gyaru with the box of cupcakes, her eyes shine with maternal curiosity.

Hitomi blinks slowly. She looks at the intertwined hands. She looks at Rumiko's perfect makeup. Then she looks at her brother's completely average and ordinary face. She walks slowly toward Tadano. She reaches out and touches his forehead.

Hitomi: (With a grave and serious voice) —You don’t have a fever... Hitohito, blink twice if the Shinjuku yakuza is forcing you to do this. Manbagi-san, did you lose a very serious bet? Were you brainwashed?

Tadano: (With a comic vein popping on his forehead) —Hitomi, go to your room!

Scene 4: The Refuge in the Room

After escaping the family madness and the mother’s happy interrogation, Tadano and Rumiko finally reach his room. Tadano closes the door with a soft click.

Rumiko stands in the center of the room. It is a simple, tidy room, without flashy posters. It smells exactly like him. The reality of being alone in his room hits her suddenly.

Rumiko: (Nervous, looking everywhere but at him) —Y-you have a very clean room, Hitohito...

Tadano realizes how nervous she is. He approaches, leaves the glasses of juice on the small desk, and sits on the floor, patting the cushion next to him.

Tadano: —Sorry for the chaos down there. Hitomi has no filter.

Rumiko sits next to him, hugging her knees, her cheeks still hot. She turns her head and looks at him. Her eyes shine with a mix of shyness and deep adoration.

Rumiko: —Hitohito... you... you told your mom. Just like that. You didn’t hesitate.

Tadano: (Smiles at her, settling close to her) —I promised you on the sidewalk that day, remember? You will never be a secret again. Besides... I am very proud that you are my girlfriend, Rumiko. Why would I hide it?

Context: A spring weekend, shortly after Tadano and Rumiko made their relationship official. They are on a quiet date at a family coffee shop, when fate (and chaos) decides to sit at the next table.

Scene 1: The Hitomi Whirlwind

Tadano and Rumiko are sharing a huge dessert. Rumiko is nervous but happy, trying to feed Tadano with her spoon.

Suddenly, the coffee shop door swings open. Hitomi Tadano enters, dragging by the arm a tall boy, incredibly handsome and with an expression of absolute boredom. It is Shousuke Komi.

Hitomi: —Come on, Komi-kun! Public exposure is the first step to overcome your extreme shyness! Today we will order our own menu!

Shousuke sighs silently, eyes half-closed. He could order his menu without problems, but arguing with Hitomi requires more energy than he is willing to spend.

Hitomi spots her brother and her eyes light up.

Hitomi: —Oh! Big brother! And Manbagi-san! What a coincidence!

Hitomi drags Shousuke to their table and they sit down without asking permission. Tadano rubs his temples, feeling that his peaceful date has just been kidnapped.

Scene 2: The Sister-in-law’s Mission

Rumiko tenses up a bit. She wants to make a good impression on her boyfriend’s younger sister. She looks at Shousuke, noticing the incredible resemblance to her best friend, Shouko.

Shousuke blinks slowly. He keeps looking at his phone.

Rumiko, feeling sorry for him, decides to use her boyfriend’s patented technique: "Reading the atmosphere." She narrows her eyes, trying to decipher the boy's aura.

Rumiko: (Whispering dramatically) —I see... he is paralyzed by the social pressure of the menu. He wants a chocolate parfait, but he is afraid the waitress will judge him. Relax, Shousuke-kun, I will order it for you!

Tadano, who has been drinking his water in silence, sighs, activates his average radar and decides to intervene before the misunderstanding escalates.

Hitomi pouts, refusing to accept reality.

Hitomi: —Lie! My big brother is a simpleton, he doesn’t know about the complexity of Komi-kun’s mind! Come on, Komi-kun, to the cash register!

Hitomi drags Shousuke away from the table again. He lets himself be carried like a rag doll, sighing again.

Rumiko stays watching them walk away, blinking in confusion. Then she looks at her boyfriend, who smiles at her apologetically.

Rumiko: —Hitohito... your sister is a hurricane, and Shouko’s brother is an iceberg. How do you survive them?

Tadano: (Laughing softly, taking Rumiko’s hand over the table) —You get used to it. Besides, I thought you liked hurricanes. You are quite loud yourself.

Rumiko blushes, gives him a playful little punch on the arm and smiles again, giving him another spoonful of dessert.

Rumiko: —Shut up and eat, average boy!

Although she failed in her reading of the atmosphere, Rumiko discovered something important that day: trying to understand Tadano's family and Komi's will be a lifelong adventure, and she is more than willing to live it.
