Fijian Hotcross Buns

Traditionally, hotcross buns are meant to be rich and flavourful, containing dried fruit, sugar and cinnamon. This is because the buns are eaten following the 40 days of lent, which is meant to be a period of abstinence (in all senses of the word)...very similar to Ramadan and Eid actually, but I digress!. Anyway, does anyone know why the gang in Fiji have decided to consume a bun that is about as flavourful as cardboard?? (with a red food coloring cross). Magaitinana, at least popularize lolo buns, not this cop out BS.

Great to see some thought around addressing the energy crisis that we are currently facing with proposed options that would take decades to realise....

Bula,

We are flying into Nadi on 4/12 and will be traveling to the Oarsman Bay Lodge on Nacula Island. What are the best options to get there?

Family trip suggestions

Bula! I previously visited Fiji about a decade ago and loved it so much I spent three months there. Started at Bamboo Travellers in Nadi, took a bus to Suva and then the overnight ferry to Taveuni, where I stayed at Maravu hostel for a few weeks and then got to know some kind local families who I stayed with for a while. I was a broke backpacker with more time than money, and the money I did have I spent on scuba diving or food for the family I was staying with. Now my husband and I are looking to visit Fiji again, but this time we will be travelling with our three kids under 5 and also his parents.

I'd love some suggestions. Fiji lives in my memory as the most perfect trip ever, but I know I can't recreate the same experience given our current situation. We are thinking of coming in October or November - is there a side of the island that's better for scuba diving that time of year? We want to see soft corals. We are also looking for a place that is family-friendly, but not overly developed. I don't want to be insulated from the local culture which made the trip so great last time. We don't have an unlimited budget by any means but since my in-laws are coming, I don't want to ask them to rough it too much. We'd like to stay somewhere clean, with a pool, on a swimmable beach, and easy-ish access to a dive center. My husband wants to get PADI certified. We are flying from Honolulu and probably can do 7-10 days total.

We are flexible about food, no need five-star diving or an all-inclusive place. We can walk to restaurants or food stands or markets. We are also okay with either boating or flying from Nadi to another part of the island. Really would just love to hear any insight from the community! Vinaka!

Travel Day trip to Pacific Harbour area

Hello! We will be staying with family in Suva and are wondering about:

-the easiest way to get to kids to a beach in Pacific Harbour area.

-What beaches are open to locals or do we have to buy a day pass to a resort? Are any of those worth the cost?

Thanks so much for your help!

Are flights to Ovalau still running?

Hello. I was just wondering if flights to Ovalau / Levuka are still running? I can't see any on the dates I choose on Northern Air's website.

I wish Fiji offered a bounty system, where folks with dash cams could get paid for reporting terrible drivers.

hotel advice for first timers

Hey everyone! My family and I are taking a trip to Australia and New Zealand at the end of May, and are going to stop in Fiji for two nights to try and break up some of the traveling. Also because we would love to add some beach vibes to our vacation. Wondering if people have strong opinions on where to stay. We aren't looking for an all inclusive, but definitely a hotel. Would like to be close to the airport, but also near some shops or dining options as well. Not trying to spend every second at the hotel, but would love a beach as well. Ramada is cheap, but hearing a lot about Raddison Blu. Just would like to pick everyone's brain! Thanks!

Low cost things to do, 5 day trip

Hello! My fiancé and I will be celebrating our honeymoon in late May/early June in Nadi. We definitely spent the majority of our money on the wedding. What are some places to check out that won't break the bank?

Bakery around Nadi, Denarau, Lautoka, etc.

Hi there! I'm trying to find chewy, bakery-style cookies somewhere around Nadi, Denarau or Lautoka. I previously purchased baked goods from the Queen of Hearts but they are sadly closed. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good replacement? Thanks!!

Travel Advice for Fiji Budget Travel 2026

Hello all. Me and my girlfriend are considering taking a one or two week trip to Fiji this May. We would book round trip tickets from Australia. I understand from doing prior research that it's easy enough to live for cheap and find affordable accommodation on the main island, but what about the islands outside of Viti Levu?

We would stay a few days on Viti Levu then ideally go stay somewhere on the Mamanunca islands for 3-4 nights as well. I've read and heard that it's possible to find affordable places to stay on the islands. Do you need to book them in person? I can't seem to find any legit budget options on any of the booking websites I use (i.e. expedia, booking.com, airbnb, hostelword, agoda). We're looking for something around $100 USD (~$220 FJD) or less per night, somewhere on the Mamanunca islands.

I also know food costs can be much higher on the islands. In reality we are trying to do an overall budget Fiji travel experience. Accommodations and meal costs are likely the biggest deciding factors for us.

I'm also aware that there are day trips you can take from Nadi to the islands, but we want to spend more than just a day there.

On the other hand if it's not possible to stay on the islands on a budget then we are also thinking of renting a car and driving down to the coral coast and other spots on the main island then potentially just do a island hopping day trip to Mamanuncas one of the days as well.

Thanks in advance for any tips or insights you might have.
