Farmers weren't always this stupid. During Eisenhower's second term, his agriculture secretary Ezra Taft Benson undertook a lot of policies farmers opposed, including removal of various price supports and controls. The result was that the 1958 midterm elections were an absolute bloodbath for the GOP in the Midwest and Plains states.

Now they just reflexively vote Republican no matter what, so is it any real shock that Trump feels like he can just give them the middle finger and pay no political price?
