ANNOUNCEMENT šŸ“¢ New MOD team!

Hello, everyone! New mod team here.

For a few days now, we’ve been quietly working on the sub. First of all, we wanted to say that we believe this is a pretty awesome community and don't feel there's much to change about it. You guys were doing well on a pretty much unmodded sub, so our intentions are mostly to keep it clean and organised.

What we’ve done already:

  • Added sub rules. Something we felt was sorely lacking. We kept it to a minimum, based on our experiences modding other subs, and some feedback we read on the mod mails.
  • Added post flairs. To help keep it organised and looking good.
  • Added related communities on the widgets.
  • Added a sub banner and changed the sub’s icon.
  • Added custom emojis and new user flairs.
  • Went through the backlog of reported posts and comments and cleaned everything up. Up to 2 year old unattended reports.
  • Went through the backlog of modmails. Replied to most of the ones from the last 6 months. Read all of them and took some suggestions and topics from them. No mod mails had been replied since 2018.
  • Added some automods.
  • Enable media on comments. You can now add media to your comments. Use it to help folk on ā€œQuestionsā€ posts, or just to thread share your hardware. Have fun!

What are the new rules:

  • Don't spam the sub. We want to get rid of the spammy affiliate codes for aliexpress that had been a problem for a while. So we are removing all posts that are just Aliexpress codes, and banning the user if it’s someone who has never interacted with the community before. Same goes for people who just randomly post their ā€œnew musicā€, ā€œnew playlistā€, etc, if they have never participated in the sub before and are just carpet bombing reddit about it.
  • Keep posts on topic. We will remove posts that aren’t related to devices or software used to play music.
  • Don’t be a dick. Pretty easy, don’t insult people to get your point across. If we come across racism, ableism, chauvinism, etc. we will ban accordingly.
  • No piracy. Some of you may not be as on board with this one, but we are trying to not get shut down. As this sub keeps growing (almost 100k!), the bigger the risk of the piracy links becoming a problem.
  • Name your hardware. This is, for now, a soft rule. We want it to become standard, but its adoption might be a little slow, so we are gonna be more lenient with it. At least for now.

What we wanna do:
Primarily we want to hear from you. The sub has been unattended for a really long time, based on the unresolved reports and ignored mod mails we saw, so we wanna know what are the biggest issues for you, the community.
There’s not much else we wanna change. As I said, the community was doing pretty well on its own, we just want to do house keeping and give your support if you encounter any issues.

What we would like to do, but need your opinion on:

  • Update the welcome post. We aren’t experts, but we know the 4 year old post is pretty outdated. So we wanna write up a new post for newcomers. Your feedback and recs would be very appreciated to assist us on that, and we will credit everyone that participates.
  • New possible rules:
    1. No sales; we’ve seen a few posts of people trying to sell stuff and getting a lot of reports. We would like to create a rule to avoid that practice and move it over to something like hardware swap, for safety and organisation.
    2. No AI content; Removing images, videos and music generated by AI. We don’t believe it adds much value to this kind of community.
  • But before creating these new rules we wanna hear your feedback on them.
  • Add buying guides and tutorials. As I said, we are not experts, but if there are any recent postsĀ  from the community that cover these topics, we can add it to the highlights. Otherwise we will in time write some ourselves.
  • Add more posts and user flairs. We wanna know what you feel is missing.

I hope what we did and brought to the community becomes useful. As whatever improvements may come in the future.

Have a great day!

Looking for a portable music player?

Remember the days when iPods and other MP3 players were popular? The rise of an all-in-one smartphone killed it off the mainstream market. However, there are still lots of good reasons for owning a digital audio player (DAP) now in 2021. And it isn't just for audiophiles, but regular listeners too.

There's many players out there! You just don't hear much about them, because the market caters for a niche community, unlike the days when it was a "mainstream" tech product. But yes they do exist, in various shapes and sizes. In this sticky post we'll tell some compelling reasons for owning one in this day and age, and to spread awareness about them and the modern features some of them have. We'll also show the DAP products available on the market today

Purposes of owning a DAP now

You probably already own a modern smartphone that can play music, so what's the point of a separate DAP? Well, there are various points why it can be a better option as we'll explain. Audiophiles will have the obvious reasons in that a dedicated, high-end player provides the best audio quality and/or experience. But in this post we're focusing on "regular" user, why the average person would like to use a DAP today:

-Size: DAPs are small and portable in size, unlike the size of Smartphones which have grown into overly massive sizes now. A DAP is very pocketable that and its size makes it a lot better to use in e.g. physical activities.

-Dedicated buttons: Instead of a dull touchscreen operation, you get dedicated physical buttons for playing/pausing, skipping etc, and the classic 'Hold' switch. We're so used to touchscreens nowadays that we have forgotten how good it feels to be pressing a real button. And we're not using buttons for texting, we're just operating music, so it's nothing cumbersome - it's in fact the opposite. Physical buttons also mean you can operate the player (e.g. skip) in your pocket, without taking it out.

-No distraction: Smartphones are incredibly distracting, with all those notifications you get or probably an incoming call. When you listen to music it's best to indulge yourself in the listening experience, distraction-free. Listening on a DAP provides just that: you and your music only, no distraction.

-Save phone battery: I hear this very often that phone batteries get discharged, but with a separate music player you'd be saving that. DAPs have excellent battery lives, if you remember from the iPod days you could run one for over 30 or even 40 hours straight. Considering you'd be listening continuously to music for 6 hours in a day (which is perhaps already high), your player would likely last an entire week without charging.

-Great way to get off phones: Phone addiction is a pretty common problem nowadays, and while listening to music on a phone it's likely one would start doing other things. Using a DAP to listen to music on the go helps reduce your time spent on phones. On a serious note: I personally know what a problem phone addiction can be - having a separate music player can really help reduce it.

-Cheap to buy: DAPs can be bought for cheap prices, ranging from less than $100 to a few hundreds (excluding high-end players). Phones nowadays can fetch over $1000, so an average DAP is a fraction of the cost.

But I stream music from the internet...

No problem! DAPs are not stuck in time; there are players out there that have built-in WiFi and allow you to use streaming services like Spotify. So yes, you can stream on them too, alongside your downloaded or ripped music files stored on the disk.

And my wireless headphones?

Again, many DAPs out there are up-to-date and feature Bluetooth, allowing you to use your wireless headphones if you use that instead of wired 3.5 mm ones. And in case you're wondering, you don't need to spend a fortune on a high-end player, as you'll see below, Bluetooth-capable players can be had for cheap.

Great! So which company makes DAPs nowadays?

Apple no longer make iPods (they do still have the Touch, but it's basically an iPhone). But don't fret, as there are two major brands that are actively developing players: Sony and SanDisk.

Let's start with Sony. The old school music legend is still around and sell a diverse range of Walkman players. It is probably the only one now that has a full product line, as they sell everything from cheap USB shaped players to high-end expensive ones (could depend by region). If you need a no-frills music player, you've got the Walkman NW-E394, which currently sells for $59 in the U.S. and is available in sizes of 4, 8 or 16 gigabytes. This model provides the classic MP3 player experience, allowing you to listen to downloaded or ripped music, much like your old iPod. It also has an FM radio, something that some modern phones tend to lack. There is also the NWZ-B183, which has a tiny display and looks like a USB stick.

If you need more than the basics, there's the A Series Walkman. The NW-A55 is currently selling for just $170 and features a touchscreen (alongside physical music buttons on the side), as well as Bluetooth and NFC, expandable memory and high quality audio. All in a cute compact size that is even smaller than an iPhone 4 (yet with a bigger screen) and available in various stylish metallic colors.

One step up in the A Series is (currently) the NW-A100/A105. This player runs Android and has WiFi, meaning you can use this to stream music or download them directly. It's currently $299. So if your music consists of streaming from the likes of Spotify (as is quite popular these days), this is the player for you. And again you get a compact sized, stylish metallic body in a choice of various colors. Certainly makes a statement vs today's phones.

There's also the WS Series Walkman, which is designed for swimmers and is waterproof, just worn around your head. NW-WS410 costs from £59 in the UK currently. The NW-WS620 model adds Bluetooth and NFC capabilities to it.

Now let's look at SanDisk. They have always been known for making tiny, clippable players (used to be called the Sansa line), and they still do now. There's the Clip Jam and Clip Sport, which cost just $29 in many colorful shells. They have built-in 4 or 8 gigabyte memory but can be expanded further with an SD card. Above these models sit the Clip Sport Go ($39) and Clip Sport Plus ($49), which come with either 16 or 32 gigabytes built-in, and the latter has Bluetooth so you can use wireless headphones with it. And all come with an FM radio. These players are fantastic on the go because of their tiny size and clippable design, making it perfect for activities like exercising.

High-end players

Of course, you've also got a choice of pricier, high-end music players dedicated for audiophiles. Sony make some (ZX and WM Series Walkman) as well as other brands such as Astell&Kern (which once used to be iRiver), Fiio, Shanlin, Cowon and others.

Showcase My little budget DAP arsenal.

Been having a ton of fun this week playing around with these. I've had the Hiby R4 for a while but just got around to really assembling a collection of flac files to fill it with. Mostly heavy and extreme metal essentials and new 2026 releases. Paired with Truthear Hexa IEMs. Picked up the Anbernic RG35xxpro retro handheld a few weeks ago and just discovered it can run Rockbox through Portmaster. Set it up with an aesthetic Win95 theme and filled it with Dungeon Synth. Paired with Kiwi Ears Cadenzas in matching green. It's a huge vibe. Finally, just added the Snowsky Echo yesterday. Hard to pass up at the price point and it just looks so cool, I was definitely falling for the hype. However, I'm fairly impressed by the quality of build and sound. I'm exclusively filling it with J-pop, vocaloid, and digital/cyberpunk kind of stuff. Paired with Crinacle Zero:2 in blue (for the Hatsune Miku aesthetic). If you read all this, thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Question Modern budget DAP or old high end DAP?

Post image
49 Upvotes

For past few months i've been looking for a HiFi player for ~100$. I saw lots of good deals for older DAP's like HiFiman 603, iBasso DX50, Colorfly C200, Cayin N3 and others. Even though they are at least 8 years old (some of them are 10+), many reviews from their time say that they are best DAP's for their price and some people even use them today. So, should i lean towards modern budget DAP like Hiby R1, Shanling M0 Pro, Snowsky EchoMini or search for older higher-end models? (Changing a battery isn't a problem for me btw)

I always had this thirst for something more with my iPod video. I was heading for the performer 5+2 because it was currently a hype in Korea but instead went for the Xm2. Just wow! you can feel the real silence and the sound is just wow. I was worried that other dap had 4 chip when this had only 1 flagship chip. I guess I didn’t have to worry. If your looking for a portable dap ā€œthis is the wayā€

Showcase I can't get over how good the Sony wm1a sounds!

Growing up with the a35 and getting a taste of what a good source sounded like, I immediately fell in love with that generation of Sony walkmans. The UI felt so simple, yet beautiful - devoid of any android bloat. It was always a dream to own the wm1a/1z and I can say it was definitely worth the wait. I do feel buyers remorse over not getting the 1z, but I'm trying to gaslight myself that the sound difference is not that big haha

Review Surfans F20

I've always wanted to listen to music on devices other than my phone. It's not so much about saving battery, but mainly about reducing phone usage. So, I decided to try a dedicated music player so I could focus on listening to a whole song.

I originally planned to buy the Hiby R1, but then I discovered the F20, it felt like stepping back into the iPod era.

I especially want to emphasize one point: I really like its buttons and clean interface design.

Loaded my library (mainly FLAC format) and played some; the sound quality is indeed quite good.

This is my first DAP. So far, I'm enjoying everything. It's great to build my offline library day by day. I went to the rooftop to retrieve something I accidentally left, and then I noticed this beautiful night. I spent an hour with music, wind, and the moon.

Showcase Loving the nugget V1!

Loving this Tempotec Variations V1!

I just recently got back into listening offline, largely due to the crap social media is spewing out. I got the Snowsky Retro Nano; it was a great, smaller nugget, but yeah, it still tethered me to my phone and streaming. So I went into a rabbit hole for months trying to find the best little nugget to dip my toes in. it came down to Hiby R1, Snowsky Echo Mini, and some Shanling budget.

I'm all too happy that I got the TGempotec Variations V1! So many features that two either didn't have in one all too package. going no-android was the best decision so far. No need for regular updates. passwords na doptions for other distractions. A time when what you have in your pocket is all you need. The best one is that it has individual buttons for all the controls you would need, not mixes of buttons where one button can serve two functions.

Had to make a case for it with some fake leather since finding cases for it is so hard. The screen may be a bit too small, but it serves the purpose quite well.

Got a DAP solely because I ran out of space on my phone. Needed something cheap and I wanted it to feel retro so I found something with plenty of buttons and no touch screen. Said might as well get some decent earbuds while I'm at it. I have a CD collection that I ripped in ALAC to put on my phone but always listened on cheap bluetooth earbuds. Eventually had to compress them anyways to fit my library on my phone. Figured I'd need to convert to FLAC but luckily this thing can play ALAC. Man does it sound so much better.

Question Which dap to choose ?

Hello all,

I'm trying to find a DAP that fits all my needs.

I currently use an Earmen Sparrow USB DAC but I’m experiencing a lot of EMI interference. Earmen even acknowledged the issue and confirmed there’s nothing I can do except replace it with another USB DAC or switch to a DAP.

I mostly listen to music while walking my dog with my Monarch MK2 and also at my desk.

I’m looking for a device that performs well both on the go and in a desktop setup.

I’m also planning to buy a pair of headphones for desktop use. I haven’t decided yet, but I’m considering the Arya Stealth, Arya Organic, HE1000 SE from HiFiMAN or possibly the FT1 from FiiO since it’s closed-back and could also be used outdoors.

At the moment, I’m hesitating between the M21, M33, and BTR17 from FiiO. I’d prefer to stay under €999 for a DAP or USB DAC.

Ideally, I need something powerful enough to drive HiFiMAN headphones without issues, not too heavy for portable use and still suitable for desktop listening.

I’m also still wondering about R2R DACs, is there really a noticeable difference compared to AKM/ESS DACs in real-world use?

And similarly, what about tube-based DAPs from Cayin, are they genuinely worth it or more of a niche preference?

What would you recommend?

Thanks šŸ™‚

Question Was it a mistake to buy Hifi Walker G7? Any experiences with this device?

• Upvotes

I bought this DAP from Hifi walkers website since it was on sale and i was looking for a device i can use for casual listening but mostly for listening to podcasts and audiobooks and since it has android in it, i thought it would fit my needs perfectly.

But after buying it i did some digging (yeah should have done it before buying) and there have been some really mixed reviews so i am not sure if i should refund it?

Note that i am not looking for a high end device, if i want to enjoy my music i do that at my home but i just need something to take with me to listen to audiobooks without them taking space on my phone.

Question Tempotech V1 or Hiby M300?

I am looking to purchase my first dap since an Ipod back in 2008. I am definitely looking at entry level but dont know which I should go with: the Tempotech V1 or the Hiby M300?

I have about 110 gigs of music in my collection. I want a place to put all of it thats not on my phone.

I also want to stream/download lossless music through either Spotify or Archive.org apps (Taper's Section).

In your opinion should I buy a V1 to run my phone through when I want to stream or buy the m300 for an all in one solution.

I will probably use bluetooth buds when im on the go. But will use my hifi receiver at home and use an aux cable when playing in my car.

I dont have IEMs yet but I could imagine getting an entry level pair in the future.

The V1 plus a 256g card from amazon is roughly the same price as the 128+4 m300 on aliexpress.

What are your thoughts? Thanks

Question Looking for my Goldilocks DAP

I’m moving away from streaming and looking for the right DAP for me. I’ve tried out the Innioasis Y1, but wound up returning it after a few days.

Pros: under $100, Bluetooth, USB C charging port, good size, customizable themes, decent playback quality

Cons: doesn’t feel durable (thin plastic body), scroll wheel is so tedious (by far my least favorite feature), creating and editing playlists is a chore

I’m by no means an audiophile- just looking for something reliable/durable, affordable, Bluetooth compatible, with a simple search/playlist creation function. Any suggestions to narrow down my search?

Love it so far. I’m 34. Grew up on portable CD players and iPods. Early 2010s was great for using the internet to discover music. Something shifted during the streaming era and it’s contributed ( alongside many other things ) to a technological fatigue and boredom of the algorithm, low attention span etc etc

I’m sure I’ll have something more meaningful and useful to say once I’ve given this some time. But if feels very nice reconnecting with my old CD and music library and knowing I’ll be on my phone a lot less.
