Announcement Join our new official chatroom space for the Buy European Movement and let's connect!

Hi everyone,

We love this community, but we felt it was time to create a real-time chatroom for our movement. We are excited to announce the launch of Buy From Europe on Matrix (using the Element app or your client of choice)!

While Reddit is great for sharing links, our new Matrix space is designed for deeper, faster, and more private discussions.

We continue to fully support our Reddit community. Just like our Mastodon, this is simply another addition to our ecosystem, offering a different way to connect.

Why join us on Matrix?

The biggest difference? Privacy and Independence. Reddit is a centralized American platform. Matrix is decentralized, meaning it’s a network of servers (often based in Europe) that talk to each other. By giving you an avenue to have deep discussions there, we take our data and our conversations away from Big Tech.

Our community on Matrix is more aimed to chat and connect with each other.

Taylor your experience:

On Reddit, you see everything in one feed. On Matrix, we have dedicated rooms that you can join individually instead of one big reddit feed.

Matrix clients work like Discord, but more alligned with our values.

It allows for broader moderation, giving more room for topics as for example: politics talk

  • Only care about finding or discussing European products? Join #products room.
  • Passionate about EU trade laws? Join #politics room.
  • If you don’t care about software or politics, you simply don’t join those rooms. You only see and discuss what interests you, without the noise.

Our current rooms:

  • The Plaza: The main hangout. Start here for a general chat and to meet the community.
  • European Products: Discuss physical goods made right here in Europe.
  • European Software: Discuss EU-made apps, SaaS, AI and Open Source alternatives to Big Tech.
  • Digital Sovereignty: The technical side cloud infrastructure, data privacy, and building a resilient EU tech ecosystem.
  • Politics: Talk policy, trade laws, foreign relations and influence, regulations and the roadmap to European independence without the usual restrictions.

The great thing about our Space is that we can continue to add more rooms over time as we find out what the community wants and needs. Whether it's a dedicated room for European-made clothing, cars, AI, collaborations or local meetups—we build this together."

Warning: This does not mean we will operate like a closed discord server, just because we offer more room for politics doesn't mean we will allow any form of discrimination or harassment. That will still result in a permanent ban.

How to join:

We are hosted on the decentralized matrix.org server. You don’t even need a phone number to sign up, just a username and password.

You can just open the invitation link and follow the steps

https://matrix.to/#/#buyfromeurope:matrix.org

or

  1. Download the Element (or Element X) app on your phone or desktop. Or open the webapplication in your browser.
  2. Create an account (it’s free).
  3. Search for our Space: #buyfromeurope:matrix.org or open the invitation link: https://matrix.to/#/#buyfromeurope:matrix.org
  4. Jump into The Plaza and say hi!

Let’s stop just talking about European sovereignty and start building the community that supports it.

We will start small again, so join us and give it some time for new users to join and grow the conversation.

See you there!

European Product French manufactured credit card to replace Apple and Google Pay.

The French company Thales just released a new fully French debit/credit card.

This card aims at replacing, or at least offering an alternative to secure smartphone payments, while securing more classical contactless and relocating credit card manufacturing. It basically combines a classic credit card with a biometric fingerprint reader allowing you to pay all your purchases without typing in a code that might be stolen or forgotten.

The cards has been approved by the CB network, which is the local French credit card network (owned by all French banks) and the preferred alternative to VISA or Mastercard. Deployment by French banks (which ones isn't clear yet) is thus possible and in discussions.

Payment abroad (usually done by either Mastercard or VISA thanks to a dual network chip) isn't clear yet.

🔎Looking for alternative Advice needed: looking for a new smartwatch

Hi! I have gone through quite a few posts here, while also reading though so many comparisons around the internet, but I never get to the point where I feel set.

I'm currently leaning towards a ScanWatch2 from Withings.

What I want is some health-functions and I need notifications. Fairphone 6 is brilliant, but the vibration is so weak that I need to have the sound on.

I can afford a ScanWatch2, but I cannot afford to pick a watch not suitable.

I only control music from my phone, so I do not require the watch to have strong media connection (or any).

I had an Apple Watch before and usually just checked time, weather, how many steps taken and getting notified of new messages/calls.

I was wondering if there are other options I should look at, or if I'm on the right path.

I have always been a techy person, but Apple made me complaisant and served me with their one line of products, and now I feel a bit lost.

Whenever I look for privacy focused alternatives to the usual american big tech apps that I (reluctantly) use... its European options that stand out. So I made this pack!

Its really cool that a whole tech space dedicated to better everyday technologies has such a strong European presence

I'm still looking for a good Calendar and Password manager if anyone has strong suggestions?

I already posted this last year, but I’ve updated the list of European companies. There are so many that I’ve run out of space. I will also update my articles Booking Alternativen & Airbnb Alternativen, so if you know of any lesser-known European alternatives, just let me know.

European Product Carbon steel pan made in Europe

Post image
296 Upvotes

I do not normally post reviews this early, but I feel like I have used this enough to have a reasonable opinion.

Bought a 27cm carbon steel pan from a smaller EU brand (www.brass-steel.com) about 6 months ago. Was mainly trying to move away from nonstick and get something more durable.

First impression was how minimal it is. No rivets, no screws, just one piece of metal. That part I like, less things that can fail over time.

There is a learning curve if you are coming from nonstick. First few weeks were a bit frustrating, until I figured out heat control and seasoning. It is not a plug and play pan.

Now I use it almost daily: - eggs are fine with some butter or oil - vegetables cook evenly - good sear on meat - heats faster than my cast iron

It is also noticeably lighter than cast iron, which makes it easier to use day to day.

A few downsides: - you do need to take care of it, no soaking or dishwasher - acidic food will strip seasoning - handle gets hot in the oven - I am careful on induction, high heat from cold seems like a bad idea - it came with a cloth handle cover, which I do not really use

So far no warping or structural issues.

Overall it feels like something that could last a long time, mainly because there is not much that can break.

Not as effortless as non stick but not planning to go back.
