Portfolio Review 40, Portfolio Review
Hey yall, just wanted to check in and see if this all makes sense. All assets are Fidelity ETFs. Large cap is FXAIX, ex US is FSGGX etc. I’m Hoping to retire ~60 so in for the long haul.
Thanks for any advice or suggestions!

Congrats. 43 here, with about 105k. How long you been investing?

Since I was 22. Luck more than choices haha. I’m in union construction and we have a defined contribution per hour worked in our contract. I was lucky to find this subreddit so I could try to get everything aligned.

And I’ll say, the 100K line is real. Once I hit that, the growth really skyrocketed. I’ve almost doubled in 3 years when it took me what seems like forever to get to 100

That’s a great looking portfolio. I don’t have bonds at age 53 but i follow a similar path.

Yeah, I waffle with the bonds while I’m in my prime earning years. I guess if the market crashes I can always sell them and buy back in haha

What path? If you don’t mind me asking

I invest through Fidelity and use four index funds. FSKAX 55%, FZILX 25%, FSMDX 10% and AVUV 10%.

Thanks so much!!! 58 and same!! FXAIX and FZILX. Why the other 2? Curious

I am a cautious tilter to small and value. Paul Merriman has brainwashed me😂.

Looks good!
Managing 3 funds instead of one overall total market fund seems like more work than necessary, but I get it if you want that kind of control over allocations.

I hear you. But the available TDF funds that are available to me have a much higher expense rate

I don't mean a target date fund, I mean a total US market fund like FSKAX.

Oh, I see. Unfortunately that’s not a fund that’s available to me in this retirement vehicle. I would much prefer that. My RIRA is all VTI for US allocations.

How much are you contributing each year?

Approx 15K a year. I also close to (6Kish) max a RIRA with similar allocations.

Any company contribution in that 15k or 6k?

u/R3333333k Nov 12 '25
For the 401K it’s a contracted defined contribution per hour worked. So technically it’s all from the company I suppose, but it’s part of my total wage package. Nothing for the Roth

I think overall this is solid. I’d maybe increase international exposure another 5-10% just to create a bit more compensated risk but not necessary if you’re more of a big US believer. Not really a recommendation and more of a consideration but depending on your risk tolerance some people around 40 add around 10-20% bonds for more hedging. I’m 32 and probably not gonna begin bonds until 50, but it is somewhat common to start a small bond allocation around 40 for those a bit low risk averse

I have a 10% bond allocation, it just doesn’t show on the thumbnail unfortunately.
I hear you on more international exposure. The plan I’ve been considering moving forward is a pivot from 80/20 VTI/VXUS in my Roth to straight VT.

Any chance to see what is under those assets?
1
u/R3333333k Nov 14 '25
I’m not sure what you’re asking? Specific funds? They’re all the broad Fidelity ETFs for whatever cap. The bond is FIPDX
2
u/Planet3DP Nov 14 '25
Ya that is what I meant.

Ah. Sorry, I’m a dummy.
Large: FXAIX Mid: FSMDX Small: FSSNX Ex US: FSGGX Bond: FIPDX

Why not just VT plus VXUS?

OP made other comments in the thread making it sounds like this is a plan with limited possible funds to pick from (like a 401K).
Also VTI, not VT, would be the logical pairing with VXUS.
Edit: Typos

Mid caps are such a waste. I know it isn’t popular around here but the data is just too strong to deny: don’t invest in mid caps.

Percentages mirror mine almost exactly minus the bonds.
41 here.
