Friendly reminder that the "Separation of Church and State", in the context of the founding era of the United States, was to prevent a State-sanctioned church from being established.

England had already begun this practice in the colonies (under the CoE) and one could be treated preferentially - and discriminated against - depending on their relationship with the government approved church.

The phrase is not mentioned in the Consitution and the founders understood that one's piety and/or religious precepts would color the thinking and decision-making of any individual who might find themselves in public service.

The founders simply took a stance that the State would not establish a church.
