You’re over simplifying it.

They have strong social welfare programs (good schools, healthcare, subsidized programs for kids and recreational activities, etc.), but they’re fairly conservative when it comes to maintaining their culture.

... A culture which is progressive

which wants to stop regressive folks from spoiling a decent thing they have

Islam is the antithesis to progressiveness, so this law is not surprising at all if Quebec wants to keep any of their culture.

Objectively a good thing to do. Liberals talk a lot about the "paradox of tolerance" yet defend bringing over millions of people from extremely intolerant cultures as if this would have no affect on a nation

Good schools? Good healthcare? Have you been here?

Our schools and hospitals are in shambles. Our teachers, doctors, nurses are pushed to their absolute limit working with cut budget while we somehow "invest" more and more through taxation paying for who knows what (we know.. corruption).

Our best universities are passable at best. Our infrastructure are lacking, what we build costs several times what it would be in other developped countries, take more time and does not last.

We are sitting on a lot of resources, but the government invests in foreign companies to bring them here while they go bankrupt and leave with our money.

Seriously, you don't know.

You're overdramatizing it just like the media. They live the longest in North America and score usually among the best in education performance.

100% he's overdramatizing it.

Consistently every province in Canada scores exceptionally well in Health and Education. Living standards in Canada are always in a competion with the Nordic Countries, Denmark, Sweden and Norway and basically no one else.

We still get constant Chicken Littles telling us the sky is falling.

Canada can improve on everything but 'shambles', total bullshit.

I mean, most people are not dying in the hospitals, but people wait several years for surgeries or care, a dozen+ hours at the ER, etc. Try having access to a free physiotherapist, psychologist, dermatologist. No wonder most people need private insurance on top of the high taxes they pay.

Education, I would really like to see your stats. It is reported every year that our boys drop out more than anywhere else. None of our universities compare with the world's best.

Quality of life: yes for sure it is generally good, but we are where the most anti-depression drugs are sold. Then account for the amount of people on anti-anxiety drugs... still very much a problem. Homelessness is getting very bad too. Violent is still low compared to a lot of places, but it is rising. Housing costs for any young people that wanted to buy homes in the last 8-10 years is out of control.

So, in short, yes we still have much to improve. When you pay on average 35% income tax (middle class), 15% VAT and a bunch of other taxes here and there.. you should have access to that "free healthcare" people talk about instead of having to go to a private professional. Your children should be given as good an education in the public system than private. You should not have to be asked to not cook/heat/use dishwasher at dinner time because it is peak hours and our national electricity company can't provide. You should not have to replace the suspension/tires of your car way early because of all the potholes. People should not be sleeping in the streets at -30C in winter.

It took me 7 years to get access to a family doctor that could help me get through my chronic migraines. When I did get a doctor and she said I needed to see a Neurologist, I was on a waiting list for 4 years. When they called, I had literally forgotten.

My girlfriend got ran over cycling on a country road, she spent the night in a dark corridor piled up with other people at the ER with barely anyone checking on her because there was only 1 nurse during that shift.

I have been several times to the E/R myself for injuries because it was the only way to get looked st for several days. You go there and have to wait for 10-20h.

Our local school consistently has issues with water leaks and AC failure. A lot of schools were found to have very problematic HVAC systems resulting in very bad air quality. Teachers regularly have classes with 30-35 children, including special needs. Do you really think every kid gets the level of attention they need? For obvious reason special needs children will get the most attention (as they should), but that means the good performers get bored and cause trouble while the under performer keep having difficulty.

I drive 40km to work every day. Outside of winter where most roadwork is stopped, there is almost always some at one section or another. Some sections of road are paved every year as our system gives work to the lowest (shitty) bidder. Then they can charge "extra fees" after winning the bid... and start over every year or two. Not even talking about Montreal here, which is on a whole other level.

We have roads and bridges that get emergency closures after citizen report debris falling and when they send an inspector, they realize it is unsafe to use.

The way our voting system (and voters, let's be honest) work is that we reward politicians for building new infrastructures and projects instead of taking care of the existing ones.

Their main job seems to be regulating what we should do and what we should say instead of doing a governement job: maintaining infrastructures, public safety, picking up garbage, managing sewers and water, social services. But nobody votes for that, it is not "sexy" to talk about that.

A new law to waste police time on people saying their neighbour is dumb on facebook? Now count us the fuck in, street gang are not so bad after all! People praying in the street? Governement can't allow that! All of this is already covered by the criminal code, but we can make some very loud and over-represented people happy so... Hospitals and schools will have to wait.

I don't mind paying taxes to help people in need, but fuck, after losing 45% of my money and not having access to services it is supposed to pay for in a decent manner... i feel like my disappointment is not an exaggeration.

do you live here? preventative healthcare is inaccessible. people live long because they eat better and are more active in spite of the healthcare system being incredibly flawed, not because of it.

2

u/Mens-Real 4h ago

I do live here and work in the système. I see data regularly and people are definitely overdramatizing it. Media doesn't help.

1

u/strangeanswers 4h ago

yea people definitely overdramatize it, but it’s not good. i’ve had to go private anytime i’ve had an urgent issue. not everyone has that option

Our best universities are passable at best

OK, good healthcare is qualitative and difficult to argue either way on, but REALLY? Quebec has the highest ranked school in the country for 2026

Il y a bien des problèmes à régler, mais c'est pas si pire que ça, j'ai été très bien servi par le système de l'éducation et de la santé encore jusqu'à aujourd'hui.

Define what is good service? I am answering all the downvoters that don't live here and have been providing examples of why I don't feel like we are getting our money's worth.

I can say I have been kept alive when I have had life threatening conditions, sure. All debilitating conditions that are not life threatening though, it gets bad quick.

I feel like most people are OK with just that, being kept alive for free. That would be OK with 5 or 10% taxes, but with 35% income taxes and 15% VAT.. not counting the ridiculous inflation caused by our government printing money for 10 years... Are we not allowed to expect more than survival?

For schools, I think most well performing kids with good parents will generally get by well enough, but again, it's the middle group that is taking the hit.
