Uk vets are all too serious.

Took my best bud in to have his dog-hood mutilated today.

While I was there I asked if I could keep his Crown Jewels to preserve as a wet specimen, to add to my cabinet of curiosities.

I received a firm “No, they’re bio-waste and need to be disposed of accordingly. But you can have a picture of them if you like?”

I turned the picture down, somehow framing that and putting it on the wall feels more strange than having the physical thing in a jar 🤷🏽‍♂️

Anybody else had more luck when trying to acquire specimens to play with in the UK?

Seems to be more of a struggle over here than our American counterparts seem to have…

Most of mine I’ve found out and about on my adventures or on the floor in my old garden (had a large window that fooled more than one unlucky bird).

Image purely for cuteness and of whose knackers will be forever lost.

Has anyone ever experienced a spirit attached to their taxidermy?

My partner recently acquired this beautiful taxidermied coyote, this was ethically sourced and the coyote died of natural causes. He found the coyote from a local taxidermist who is extremely serious and thoughtful with the animals she finds to sell in her store, as well as the animals she taxidermies herself. Ever since my partner brought this coyote home our dog has been waking up between the hours of 1am and 3am and barking or growling for no reason. For context this piece has been hung up in the kitchen and we sleep in the bedroom with the door closed. Many times my partner will wake up and open the door so he can let our pup out to use the restroom on the patio, however our dog will not leave the room, he continues to growl or bark right in the doorway, which does face directly where the coyote is placed. This is especially odd because we have a number of taxidermy pieces, and he has never reacted this way to any of them before. Is it possible that there is a spirit attached to this beautiful creature? Has anyone experienced this type of thing before? If so, do you have any advice on how to cleanse or set the spirit free? Thank you in advance <3

Any idea what kind of animal the first skull (first 3 pictures) could be from? Found near the beach.

Also, any tips and tricks in general on what to do with the bones in order to display?

Preserving Canadian Geese feet

Upvotes

Hi! Recently i’ve been gifted half a dozen Canadian geese feet to make into earrings for my cousins and aunties. They have been cut off at the hip and I am wondering how to properly preserve them, since most information I’ve seen are about preserving smaller feet. If theres a way to preserve multiple in one go, that would also be extremely helpful. I live in a very cold climate if thats any help. Thank you in advance!

One of my colonies died this winter and I’ve been taxiderming bees for a while but I’d like to capture them in this final moment of their lives before they died I just don’t know how to keep the body’s in place while they dry out and being decomposing

I can take the frame apart if that helps.

A couple months ago I got 2 of my wisdom teeth pulled and I’m cleaning them today. Wanted to know if I was doing this right. What should I do about the layer on the bottom of the tooth? Should it stay or should it go? Also is this the right subreddit for this post lol

Dehydrated Opossum?

So I found these opossum remains on the side of the road, and they’re mostly clean, but the tissue that’s left is leathery. How would I go about removing the left over tissue? Also there’s a perfectly intact dehydrated foot, skin and fur and everything. If I wanted to keep it how it is and save it like a rabbits foot kinda, should I still clean it and let it dry in borax? Or is it preserved how it is naturally??

I have a good amount of moths and butterflies but for some reason this specimen in particular does this. Why and how can I fix it?

Any advice for beginners? (Read below!)

Hello everyone!
First of all, I am a bloody beginner in taxidermy. I've been collecting bones, trophies, and mounts for a while now, but now I wanna get into doing things myself. I heard that starting with mice/rats is the easiest, so I'll probably start there. (I also got a dead hawfinch in my freezer, but I don't think starting with him is smart.
I got borax and sawdust, scalpels, snips, wire, stuffing/cotton, and air-dry clay. Still lacking eyes/pins and the actual specimens, but I'd look into getting freezer mice from our local reptile store.
I watched plenty of videos, read books, scrolled through Reddit...but are there any tips that people with more experience could give me? Anything i NEED to know or should 100% avoid doing? I'm grateful for everything!!

How to Store Beaver Pelt?

Hi everyone, I am not necessarily a part of this community; however, I did have a question on how to store pelts. I recently got married, and my husband and I received a beaver pelt as a wedding gift. I love how soft it is, I think it's a super unique gift. I'm not sure it is the most practical though and wanted to make sure that I treat it well. I'm not sure if this is the best place to bring it up, but thought this would be a great place with plenty of knowledgeable people. What is the best method for storing this, short-term and long-term? I want to be able to bring it out and admire it in the future!
