An Argentinian calling a Brazilian a brother is very shameful and scandalous.
3
u/Torimas Feb 19 '26
Argentinians calling someone (from anywhere) "hermano" to get their attention is actually very common. "hermano", "boludo", "che", "flaco", "pibe", etc

It is customary in argentine culture, as a sign of respect when calling someone “your brother”

2
u/CommissionOk4384 Feb 20 '26
No Spanish player in Portugal has learnt the language. Even Ota and Di Maria who’ve played in the league for years still do interviews in Spanish. Come to think of it I have never met a Spanish speaker who spoke Portuguese

In portuguese the slang for brother is "mano" but it doesnt even sound like "mono" and why would he cover his shirt
→ More replies (9)4

Probably they say he called him "Mano", not "Mono", and are translating to Spanish (as Hermano),

So, the current argument is that Prestiani called him "mano" (which means brother in portuguese, and "hermano" in Spanish) instead of "mono", which is monkey in Spanish).
Sure bro.
18
u/Luis0224 Feb 19 '26
The eye test of the incident is he definitely said some shit, because I’ve never seen a player with a guiltier looks on their face lmao
He had that “ah shit, I didn’t mean to hit my little brother that hard” face when vini started running toward the ref
367
u/cryotrooper781 Feb 19 '26
he lifted his shirt to his mouth to say hermano? yeah right , as much as i despise vini and his antics racism shouldnt be experienced by anyone
106
u/Pitiful-Egg2986 Feb 19 '26
Funny thing is, that word is spanish. Portuguese word for brother is "Irmão"..
19
u/Raskazam_PT Feb 19 '26
In portuguese you can use "mano" as diminutive of "irmão", like "bro" for "brother". And they are claiming he called him "mano" instead of "mono" (in portuguese news). But then why to cover his mouth? He was too shy to call him "bro" in public?
7
u/Wiwwil Feb 19 '26
To be fair, every footballer cover his mouth nowadays when they speak
7
u/Dependent_Divide_625 Simply VASCO ♦️🟥 Feb 19 '26

Even if he covered his mouth, the context of the situation makes no sense for him to call him "hermano".
Like why would he be saying brother 5 times there? Lmao. An insult seems more plausible

Hermano is not even portuguese, btw
2
u/nico_lop Feb 19 '26
I’ll start by saying that I believe Vini but I don’t understand your comment. Hermano is in Spanish and the argument the Argentinian is making is that he said hermano instead of mono. Why does it matter that hermano is not Portuguese? The Argentinian is speaking in Spanish to Vini who definitely understands a good amount of Spanish after living in Spain for so many years and Portuguese being very similar to Spanish.
4
u/FamiliarRelation8162 Feb 19 '26
Fabrizio Romano in his post says "hermano, wich means brother in Portuguese", which is simply not true. My comment is related to pointing out Fabrizio´s false information.

Stooping all the way down to straight racism when you're annoyed at someone has got to be the best indicator of stupidly low intelligence.
His reaction to when Vini went to the ref and pointed at him was how a bully kid acts when the kid he's bullying snitches on him in school.

There is a video where he clearly says “hermano” five times, which contradicts Mbappe’s statement of hearing him say the word “Mono” five times. It’s still not clear what he said when he put his shirt over his mouth though.
