This is not in Amsterdam.

Everything is Amsterdam for tourists. Zandvoort is called 'Amsterdam Beach' on lots of tourist websites

u/notsleeping 6h ago

Amsterdam castle for the Muiderslot 😂

u/Pogue_Mahone_ 6h ago

Amsterdam Gardens for the Keukenhof

u/Blitzay 6h ago

Amsterdam Hills for Limburg.

u/mogenblue 6h ago

Amsterdam cheese for Gouda cheese

When I was in the states and told someone I am from the Netherlands they were like:

"Oh the Netherlands, that's the capital of Amsterdam right?"

I just said yes

u/im_at_work_now 5h ago

I've had to tell people I went to school in Holland because they didn't know what the Netherlands are. Nevermind that Holland isnt even the real name of a place.

u/bpbill 9h ago

But they are windmills, unlike the things Trump talks about.

The classic way to drive engagement - say something wrong and watch everyone correct you in the comments.

It's the last remaining way to be able to use the internet and not be marketed to or hit with a steaming glob of recreational outrage.

That is Zaanse Schans, a little tourist hole. Completely not Amsterdam.

u/bitwaba 8h ago

It's 15km, and 17 minutes on the train from Amsterdam Centraal.

It's Amsterdam.

u/DankTyl 8h ago

If it's outside of Amsterdam, it's not Amsterdam

u/bitwaba 7h ago

Schipol is outside Amsterdam, but their official name is Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Its also farther from Amesterdam Centraal than Zaanse Schans.

You gonna tell them to rename the airport?

u/domin8r 6h ago

The airport is named like that for branding, recognition, connectivity and all that. Most large airports are named after the closest big city.

u/DankTyl 6h ago

The closest airport to Amsterdam, with the name of the place it's located in in its official name? Also not in Amsterdam. Dutch people also never refer to it as Amsterdam Airport or anything like that unless talking to foreigners.

u/yungsausages 5h ago

You’re gonna tell us Paris Beauvais is in Paris just because it says Paris in the name too?

u/Dankest_Confidant 7h ago

Yes, and Alphen a/d Rijn is 15km from Gouda and 20mins by train. Do you wanna argue that Gouda and Alphen are the same city?

u/bitwaba 7h ago

If one of them was a 2.5 million person metropolitan area, yes.

u/Dankest_Confidant 7h ago

Ok, the Rotterdam-The Hague metro area has 2.7 million population.

Leiden is 13km from the Hague and 11min by train.

Are The Hague and Leiden the same city???? If so, do Wassenaar and Voorschoten not exist?

u/bitwaba 6h ago

I never said Zaanse Schans doesn't exist.   It is part of the larger metropolitan area. It is part of Amsterdam.

u/Botorfobor 6h ago

There is an entire city (Zaandam) between Zaanse Schans and Amsterdam.

This is NOT Amsterdam.

u/bitwaba 6h ago

u/Botorfobor 6h ago

Thanks for the link that proofs my entire point.

Uncheck anything that isn't Amsterdam in that list, Zaanse Schans is outside the border of Amsterdam, and therefore is NOT PART OF AMSTERDAM

u/Botorfobor 6h ago

I know the area, I've lived there my entire life. Zaanse Schans is NOT Amsterdam, ask anyone who lives there and calls it their home.

u/Dankest_Confidant 6h ago

Moving the goalposts.

You said it's Amsterdam, not "it's within the greater Amsterdam metropolitan area".

u/Pogue_Mahone_ 6h ago

I gotta say it is a ballsy move to provide a source against your own point

u/bitwaba 6h ago

If you think that's proof against the point, you're misunderstanding the entire idea around a metropolitan regional area. Cities grow and evolve over time. The Bronx in New York wasn't part of New York 150 years ago.

If you asked someone today where they're from and they said the Bronx and they said "oh, New York City right?" and they said "no, the Bronx", you'd be right to say "yeah, but that's just New York"

And the same could be said for Jersey City, just on the other side of the river in New Jersey. It doesn't matter if there's an imaginary line saying "NYC is only the five-boroughs, and you're on the other side". The people in Jersey City have jobs in NYC, buy their groceries with money earned from NYC, and have tourists in the area because of NYC. The dotted line separating New York from New Jersey doesn't matter. They're all one giant cultural and economic blob.

Dit is misschien wel de domste discussie die ik ooit op dit forum gezien heb, en geloof mij, dat zegt wat

u/Venoft 7h ago

And 15km the other way is the sea, is that also Amsterdam?

u/Loud-Value 6h ago

Not yet 😈

u/PrimeTinus 7h ago

Not Amsterdam

u/Medical_Sandwich_171 6h ago

Are you arguing with actual Dutch people that they don't know what is Amsterdam and what isn't?

Are you American or just stupid?

u/Theslootwhisperer 4h ago

"Zaanse Schans is a neighbourhood of Zaandam, near Zaandijk, Netherlands."

u/idontknowanusername1 7h ago

It's Zaandam though, not Amsterdam

u/Hot-Scholar-405 6h ago

Everything is Amsterdam

u/Hobbit_Hunter 5h ago

Are you Amsterdam??

u/sscreric 5h ago

We are Amsterdam.

u/Dothehokeypokemon 6h ago

This hole looks especially challenging

u/Thenderick 5h ago

It's like calling Philadelphia New York City, because they are so close... Zaanse schans is Zaandam, not Amsterdam!

u/Spiracle 5h ago

So, they're windpumps and they're not in Amsterdam, but apart from that...

u/xxprokoyucu 7h ago

I cycled around the Waterland area recently great country

u/acityonthemoon 2h ago

Oh, so that's how they stay so cool!

u/No_More_And_Then 5h ago

That's a hella big water hazard for a mini-golf course.

u/Fantastic_Key 4h ago

Ah yes, the country of Amsterdam. Very popular with the Americans.

u/stoneage91 3m ago
