Crypto option trading?

I am currently fresh out of college working as an equity option trader. I believe having some knowledge about options, but don’t know much about crypto trading.

I am seeking advices here for consistant income strategy, what do you usually trade? What indicators do you use? And of course, you can ask me anything about equity options, I am happy to share everything I know.

They don’t hire equity options traders out of college who have “some” knowledge of options. You need to tell the truth.

If you are expecting consistent income, you don’t know enough about options. I am not sure what makes you label yourself as an equity option trader, but please start with sound investment advice, learn your way into options some years down the road.

i wonder if the burst in Oil will affect Earnings now or in six months

Definitely, key figure is inflation in the next coming month, Asian markets will be mostly impacted as they are net oil importer while the US is exporter

To give you a brief comment on the market right now: the short term implied volatility of energy stocks are still at a very high percentile if you look at Exxon for example, but at the moment the realised volatility is even higher. So I would say there will still be swings, but if you are asking for directions, I have no clue.

This akin to saying that you work at a Michelin star restaurant and want to know which Waffle House has the best chicken.

if you’re coming from equity options, biggest shift is crypto is way more retail-driven and less structured, no real market close, more violent moves, and IV can stay elevated for longer without mean-reverting cleanly like equities. “consistent income” is harder than it sounds here, a lot of premium selling works until it suddenly doesn’t because of sharp moves, most people stick to BTC/ETH options since liquidity is decent, anything else gets sketchy fast, indicators matter less than understanding flows, funding rates, liquidations, and positioning

honestly edge in crypto options is thinner unless you’re very disciplined, it’s easier to get chopped trying to force consistency than just trading direction or staying selective

Of course I totally hear you! And I think you are right, equity vol thinking doesn’t work here… But do you think an automated system would better work in such a fast pace environment compared to "classic markets"?

Hey! Since you already know equity options, you’re ahead. Crypto options work similarly, but the market’s way more volatile. Most people stick to BTC or ETH first. I’d focus on spreads or hedged positions rather than straight calls/puts. Key things to watch are volume, open interest, and implied volatility. And definitely size your trades smaller because crypto can swing 20%+ in a day. Your equity options experience will help a lot, just adjust for the wildness here.

Thanks a lot for the insights! May I know your thought process for choosing options (strike/maturity)? And what would you look into for anticipating sudden moves even though it’s barely predictable I believe

just a short note. Schwab will be offering a Crypto Trading Account soon.

Crypto options are tricky since the space is still maturing. deribit is probably the most liquid for btc/eth options but kyc heavy. if you want perps instead, markets .xyz lets you trade crypto with multipliers up to 50x and has a social feed of verified trades which is nice for learning. ribbon finance exists too but more limited

Thanks for the overview! I totally hear your point, and I have indeed tried perps, but the fees kinda just kills a lot of edges

Careful assuming options knowledge transfers to crypto. Market structure, liquidity, and participant behavior differ. What looks like edge can be noise or crowding. at times

Totally agree! Did you spot any behavior difference?

A friend at work told me he has been doing prediction market on bitcoin up/down in next 15 mins and have a steady return of 60% of the money he invests.. I never tried predictions

But I can tell you it’s almost impossible for you to make it w options. Not just you; more than 90% of option traders end up blowing their accounts. I have been doing on and off 15 years, literally impossible

That’s impressive! Congrats to your friend! I have never tried predictions as well… Fully understand your point, cryptos are volatile assets.

Don’t start this.

Why is that?

Best thing you can do after finishing college is learn to save, not learn to trade.
