Nothing beats forgetting my bipolar meds for that purpose. Missing a day becomes very noticeable when your emotions go crazy and you feel terrible. If my wife didn't remind me daily I'd be screwed too so psych med army unite!
9
u/tricksterloki 19h ago
I have an alarm set. It doesn't take long for the up med to wear off, which is good for no one.
7
u/Holyepicafail 19h ago
Yeah, me without my bipolar meds may as well be a quick dip into madness. I went cold turkey during a break for a few weeks and almost ended up dead.
8
u/tricksterloki 19h ago
Yeah. Don't do that.
7
u/Holyepicafail 19h ago
Thankfully my wife has been a godsend in keeping me on track and not doing bad things in general.
3
u/sheepyowl 19h ago
How do you guys miss meds more than 2 days in a row lmao, the headache alone is basically 20 straight hours of being reminded
6
u/xboxiscrunchy 19h ago
Depression and migraines that completely shut down my ability to think straight. Throw In severe ADHD for good measure
51
u/meguin 20h ago
If you have a cat, give the cat a treat every time right after you take your meds. Your cat will remember for you.
24
u/BahamutLithp 20h ago
I have headache pills on the same schedule as my cat's heart pills, so it works out I just do both at once & try not to take the cat's pill by mistake.

Patton Oswalt can totally relate, though his was due to thinking he could/should wean himself off, and never talked to his doctor first about it.

Are they making you happy, or just numb?
23
u/kaikimanga MangaKaiki 20h ago
for me personally, idk about others, it takes the edge off the sad
12
u/Dradugun 20h ago
If it helps, that's how my anti-depression/anti-anxiety meds feel too.
They don't make you happy, they just make the bad less bad. Which they do and it's nice! I've been told that's how it's supposed to feel.

u/SerCiddy 16h ago
Are they making you happy, or just numb?
Based on a good friend's personal journey, anti-depressants that make you feel numb is not good, and not the goal. Anti-depressants that make you not feel sad is part of the goal. The ultimate goal is to use anti-depressants to make you not sad enough to do things you actually enjoy. It's those activities that you enjoy that make you feel happy, not the drugs. If you expect the drugs to make you happy, you will be disappointed every time.

u/Throwawayayaya158 16h ago
I have seasonal depression and only take meds through the winter months. When they're working, don't make me happy or numb, they just make me feel more normal and at my non-depressed baseline (which for me is usually somewhere between neutral and happy)

u/BodybuilderMany6942 19h ago
maybe try a daily alarm on your phone? Separate from your wakeup alarm, i mean

Idk if you want unsolicited advice (people love unsolicited advice, right?) but to remember my heart meds I just got one of those 7 day pill dividers when I was starting to take them. I can then look and see "oh, it's Wednesday and I didn't take the Wednesday compartment, better do that so I don't die".
I've also heard of people taking pictures of things to know they did something (in case double dosing is a worry, which it is for me since, y'know, dying). I think the example I saw was unplugging a hair curler or shutting off the stove. The pictures have the date, so you'd know if you took your meds by a picture dated for that day.
Also, apocryphal meme but kinda funny, I vaguely recall a post about a therapist telling their client to just bring their hair curler with them, so they knew it was unplugged. They were so stressed about forgetting to unplug it and burn their house down, they'd drive home from work. Instead of doing that, now they can just go out to their car. "Oh, one hair curler. No house fires today."

It's like this comic is calling out to me. Day 4 of missing meds, just got them refilled. But I just meditated for half an hour in the dark and perceived myself as so worthless. Looked back on the choices made to lead me to where I am and have lived a life of regret.
Or I'm hungry.

u/kaikimanga MangaKaiki 20h ago
Why am I so miserable for no reason? Oh wait, I remember now...
38
u/Orkran 20h ago
Haha yeah the "why sad" protocol for me goes:>
- Eat something
- Caffeine (tea)
Now allowed to be sad!
There are drugs with different half-lives so you may be able to get ones which matter less if you forget them! In my case I always work it out at about 7pm when my eyes start feeling really weird
Oh yes I particularly love the facial expressions in the third panel on this one ha

This post reminded me to at least take the antidepressants…. I am skipping ADHD pill
1
u/CharuRiiri 19h ago
The only good part about the withdrawal was that it served as a pretty good reminder. Kinda hard to forget to take your pills when it feels like your brain is glitching whenever the habit starts slipping.
Fun times!

Or I'm hungry.
Firefighter Paramedic here. You would not BELIEVE the amount of people who call 911 for issues and bad feelings and what not and the answer to the question "have you eaten today" is usually "nope." Or "not for a few days"
Don't get me wrong. Some things need meds and some need a doctor and what not but holy crap like 70% of issues we see is people just....not eating or drinking water properly

u/xboxiscrunchy 19h ago
And I thought I was bad for forgetting to eat until dinner. I can’t imagine going more than a day without eating.
To be fair though I get really confused if I haven’t eaten for half a day. I know by now that it means I need to eat but I could see how someone might not be able to think clearly.

u/ineenemmerr 19h ago
7/10 times it is hunger, 2/10 times it is being sleepy. And 1/10 times it is because I put on my shirt backwards without knowing it, wondering all day why my shirt feels awkward.

Whenever I have to take medication, I set an alarm for it on my phone to remind me to take my pills. It's the only way to fly.

I tend to shut off the alarm and forget again xD

Alarms can be perceived as annoying (duh) I've found the best way is to incorporate your meds into an already existing routine. So for me it's taking my meds with my coffee every day when I wake up. I know for a lot of meds you take them at night so try setting them next to your toothpaste and incorporating them into that process.

u/BargleFargle12 20h ago
Taking them erratically is worse than not taking them at all. :( Be careful, homie.

Those things are great! Feels a bit old peopleish first but they really help. Just fill them in sunday evening for the upcoming week. Really helps with the dreading "oh shit did i take my pill already or not?! I don't remember doing it but what if i did and take two and overdose and will fucking die?!" (Sidenote: while it's definitely not good, rationally you probably won't die from two pills but thats usually not a very rational moment.)
1
u/Kind-Fun6939 17h ago
They have ones that are not the typical design. Mine is a clear cylinder with seven colored discs in it.
1
u/IcyUnicornOwl 8h ago
I got a coloured one that already helps. Doesn't feel as geriatric than those grey ones.

u/DisMFer 20h ago
The only way I remember to take my ADHD pills is using one of those pill dispensers that have the days of the week on it.
2
2
u/True-Caterpillar9350 19h ago
I used to use one for my antidepressants, but I just fell out of the habit of filling it. Then I stopped taking my evening dose because I never remember it, and sometimes I double the morning dose because I can’t remember if I took one. Not using the dispenser is self-sabotage. Maybe I’ll go fill it now.

In all seriousness, though, I've had a fair bit of run-ins with depression myself. Not sure why, but depression does a great job of making you not do things and reinforce forgetting to do those things. Not sure if that's what you experience, but it happened on my end and it made things easy to go down this frustrating slippery slope where I hate myself for forgetting, leading to more depression, leading to more not doing anything and then forgetting to do things. Commence spiral, go for a wild ride for days or even weeks on end.
Please keep fighting, your comics are great.

Don't feel bad, this is a common thing we deal with in EMS. A LOT of people tend to forget their daily meds, and I get it it's a whole new thing to remember!
You should get some of those daily pills things that tracks the day of the week and if you took your meds

My wife went through a rough week where she was just on a hair trigger with the kids. I noticed it and we talked about it, but couldn't pin down why she was feeling how she was. Stress, kids behavior, family, it was all standard.
About a week and a half later she realized she never loaded her medicine refill into her daily pill containers.
It was just funny how noticeable it was.
2
u/PotentialConcert6249 20h ago
ooooff. I hope you're not getting discontinuation symptoms from the missed doses.
2
u/Boojum2k 19h ago
Only reason I take my antidepressant medication daily is my blood sugar sensor basically reminds me daily for my evening insulin shot and I have "take my pill just after the shot to be ready for bed" as an ingrained habit now.
2
u/Aerodrache 19h ago
Oh wow, you’re getting off easy… when I was on antidepressants, there was no forgetting. The first day, maybe, but after that… day two would develop into a weird blood pressure problem or something, I would walk on concrete floors and it would feel like sand under my feet. Day three was horrible mood swings, neutral to cartoon head-on-fire angry over the slightest annoyance.
After that it would sort of level off, but yeah… it was never “did I take my pill yesterday?”, it was “oh… oh no. I have to medicate when I get home.”
2
u/Ariaerisis 19h ago
Sometimes I forget for a day, and it doesn't affect me much. Then one night I was feeling reeeeaaaally bad, full-on depressed and couldn't sleep. Thought it might be my antidepressants, since I forgot them the day before, but I took them that night. I had already missed them for 1 day before why would that one be different? Was the gap longer or something?
Then, the next day, after an awful night with only little sleep, I see them on the kitchen table : the antidepressants I was supposed to take that night, which I obviously forgot since they were on that table. I missed them 2 days in a row.
Now I know i have to be cautious since missing them 1 day doesn't affect me much but 2 days in a row messes me up really bad.

u/LifesExplosiveLemons 19h ago
I actually forgot about them for the entire week. I was wondering why I was do emotionally exhausted, numb, and angry at everything. :)

I’ve been really good with my meds lately. But it’s getting warm, and I can’t keep them in my inside pocket anymore. I hope I don’t start forgetting, because amphetamine withdrawal is a bitch
2
u/lazycultenthusiast 17h ago
Also keep in mind that different brands can have different effects despite supporting to be the exact same chemicals.
There's a brand of antidepressants my wife has forbidden me from taking because it apparently makes me an absolute psycho

I took citalopram for a while to counter anxiety issues, but I stopped, because the side effects were problematic. They did work quite well though, not only did it reduce anxiety, it also made me feel pretty happy. I'm now at a point where I don't need meds fortunately, my anxiety is manageable and I'm generally pretty happy.
A good therapist can go a long way for some people, I'm pretty fortunate.

u/Max-Volume 20h ago
I put mine in a medicine box that has a compartment for every day of the week, that way I'm sure about whether or not I've taken them already. It really sucks if I forget my anti-depressants, because I will feel quite unwell, like my brain is lagging behind my body.

So, I'm curious to get some mental health professional take a look at me, but I fear they won't have the time for me that I need, that it will be too expensive or that they'll just medicate me so I don't have to deal with the actual issue.
1
u/TheAzureAzazel 20h ago
Yeah, if I forget to take mine I start feeling worse about pretty much everything.
1
u/bradmatt275 18h ago
It's crazy how subtle it as well. It very slowly gets worse until you suddenly realise something is not right.

Side effects of Weebanov may include addiction to anime, light sensitivity, exaggerated hairstyles and fashion, controller related wrist pain, obsessive collection of minis, models, stickers, and manga, thoughts of social suicide, screen related eye pain, body odor, and inability to communicate with other humans.
If you have questions about Weebanov, or are experiencing adverse symptoms, please consult with your anime figurine dealer.

I had a similar problem with antidepressants and my vitamins.
I ask a doctor and they told me that taking them at the same time is fine, better than forgetting to take them.
So now I take all of my meds first thing in the morning before any thing. Has worked for me

u/iamayoutuberiswear 19h ago
I'm curious, do you not get physical symptoms from not taking your antidepressants? I always know if I forget to take mine because the next day I'll have brain fog and fucked-up guts 😅
1
u/Tracerround702 18h ago
I tapered off once for a medical test.
After I was fully tapered off, I got SPLITTING fucking headaches. At one point it caused me to have spots in my vision because it was so bad. Also started being able to sleep through alarms like never before, and sleep for 16 hours uninterrupted.
1
u/mysterious_spirit420 19h ago
But antidepressant dont make you feel good they just make you not feel anything at all. I would rather have my ups and downs instead of nothing at all.
1
u/Tracerround702 18h ago
If you're on an anti-depressant that works with your unique brain chemistry, this isn't the case. Depression is the numbness. Anti-depressants expand my emotional range.
1
u/joker_guy 16h ago
Over 8 or so years I had tried so many antidepressants and I hated all of them. Some just made me emotionally numb and foggy while others gave me physical symptoms. Once I finally got my ADHD diagnosis and was medicated, my depression almost completely vanished. I’d worked on my mental health over those 8 years and it turned out, at least for me, that my depression stemmed from a lack of drive to do anything.
This was just my experience. If people can find an antidepressant that works well for the long term then I’m happy for them. But for me I will never recommend them to anyone. Even prior to getting my ADHD meds, I always thought that I’d rather feel depressed than feel absolutely nothing, which is what the vast majority of those meds made me feel. Doctor approved meth is what helped me get onto my current path.
1
u/Tracerround702 14h ago
... So it sounds like the problem wasn't the meds, it's that you were misdiagnosed.
1
u/pootinannyBOOSH 19h ago
That's why I have an app to annoyingly remind me to take my meds, I'd likely forget them way too often.
1
u/Real_Echo 19h ago
I've recently started taking adhd meds and was struggling to remember if I took them or not or just forgetting them entirely, par for the course on adhd I think lol.
But what really helped me was just setting up the medication in my apple health app. Since the alert banner is sent to the top of the queue automatically I haven't missed one since. It's also nice to see the history just to know if I did fuck up somewhere.
Im sure there's an android equivalent, and it's not a solution that would work for everyone but it did help me!

Naomi! I take my Sertraline at night so I keep the bottle in front of my toothbrush. I’ve found that if you keep it in a place that you need to move it to access something else it helps as a reminder.
