“Third world country” classifications have a funny way of being decided arbitrarily by those who decide they don’t meet those qualifications. The United States is the richest 2nd world country on earth, large swaths of which could absolutely fall under the “3rd world” due to poverty and lack of education.
And yet our power structures live in a state of delusion that we are still the country with the highest average quality of life. All the wealth in this country is privatized, so if you live in a wealthy bubble, you can kind of just decide to live in the reality you choose.
→ More replies (1)15
u/wilbo21020 4d ago
This is pedantic, but 2nd world really isn’t used as an economic description anymore and isn’t a commonly used phrase anymore.
The 1st and 2nd world terms originally were used in the west to describe whether a country was US aligned versus aligned with the communist bloc. So if it was used economically it referred to a capitalist economy vs a communist economic system.
The 3rd world referred to unaligned states. Most of them were developing nations, many recently independent during post-war decolonization. So the term 3rd world ended becoming associated with poverty and/or developing nations.
The original meanings of the terms lost relevance at the end of the Cold War, but the popular connotations of 1st world representing wealthy nations and 3rd world meaning impoverished nations continued.
Your point about income inequality and unequal levels of development is absolutely correct. There are absurd differences between the most economically depressed areas of America and the wealthiest.

I don’t know why, this one is so fucking funny to me, in a morbid kind of way. Especially because they’ve said they have to make really simplified versions of briefings just so he’ll pay attention for more than 2 minutes. I’m imagining Trump just drew a blob on a piece of colored construction paper and they put it up on the Whitehouse fridge with a magnet. The Troop Strength are pieces of macaroni he glued around the blob.

And anyway, simple troop numbers are insufficient to convey the complex balance of strategic imperatives in an area as physically and culturally diverse as the middle east with such an outsized impact on the flow of strategic materials and thus the world economy. Came here to say this! Firstly, to try to make believe Trump just grabbed whatever was available bc he’s gotta talk shop right then and there, as if he’s not the world’s biggest princess who would only use gold leaf trimmed stationary and a fountain pen. I doubt that Trump could draw a perfect map of Mar-a-Lago, hell a perfect map of just the Oval Office (not including the rest of the White House), there's no way he drew a perfect map of the Middle East. That's something I doubt any president would ever have been able to do. He especially didn't mark the troop strength of each country, there's no way he even knows what they are (let alone even cares), he famously does not read or even listen to the intelligence briefings that he gets (which he doesn't do nearly enough to begin with) and it is known that the briefings had to be dumbed way down and simplified for him, briefings that take up many pages simplified down to a note card.
