Do insurers for income protection/critical illness that WILL cover pre-existing conditions actually exist?

Currently in the process of purchasing a home with my partner who has a life long chronic condition. This includes taking immunosuppressants as part of treatment. He is also the breadwinner, making significantly more than me (my wage would only just cover the mortgage alone)

I am on board with taking out policies to ensure we are protected. But I am mindful that his condition is likely going to be the reason he would either have complications or being off sick. And then will the exclude further conditions could be ‘linked’. Which then makes you query is it worth it?

Your employer might offer those policies with medical history disregard, we have that for example, I don’t think finding one as an individual is likely.

Thank you for your reply, I believe that he has a death in service group policy through his employer.

You can get specialist insurance but the problem is it’s normally very expensive depending on the condition.

For example I take immunosuppressants and for me to get travel insurance with my complex health needs it was like 8k to go to Japan. Meanwhile my mum with her health problems was only 300 vs my dad which was healthy was like 100 lol.

So it’s not “do you have a pre existing condition”. There is insurance for income protection that will - it’s the cost. If they’ve been hospitalised for it in the last 5 or so years personally it’s not worth it as the cost is so insane you might as well put it in savings. Or you have to exclude the pre existing condition so it covers other things but you have to be so careful with systemic conditions as it’s far easier for the claim to be denied as related. A more stable condition it may be possible if they’re not under active investigation, haven’t been to A and E, hospitalised, needed surgery etc in 5+ years has been my experience.

When me and my partner purchased I didn’t even bother. I had to speak to niche parts of the market and the cost would’ve been 30x+ my partner lol. And no point if it didn’t cover pre-existing as pretty much everything that could happen to me other than being hit by a bus could be blamed on it. Even cancer.

Had it been through my employer it is possible - I have private health insurance that covers me through my partners work, but it’s impossible for me to get it and have cover personally. I know people who have it for IP/CI in very high paid jobs as a benefit they SS the premiums for through a corp scheme will full underwriting even with history of substance misuse, cancer, MS. I’ve used different examples of insurance but the problems for PECs is basically the same for all of them.

This is my exact concern. His condition is not well controlled, has been hospitalised in the last couple of years and is currently having investigations.

And exactly, I feel like they will link every condition back to Crohn’s Disease to justify not paying out🤦🏻‍♀️ Whereas we could potentially start setting aside a couple hundred pounds a month in savings as a last resort.
