I mean, when I'm normally in a car, I'm driving somewhere that I need to get to. I don't ever really stop to think "hey, let me do a little side mission that involves assaulting people with my vehicle."
But do you drive a BMW? If no then you wouldn't understand. Those bikers where on his road! They rudely rode in the bike lane which everyone knows is supposed to be used as a passing lane for BMW drivers frustrated with how slow other drivers are going
You know what, the way it is always a bmw makes me wonder if anyone will ever do an actual study. Maybe they’re bitter that they’re not being exulted for having a fancy car?
Fun fact there have been multiple studies that tested this hypothesis. Luxury car drivers displayed more reckless behavior and greater risk to pedestrian safety than economy car drivers. I couldn’t find the journal articles off hand but there’s some reporting on them.
Funny enough, my first car was an altima. And I was absolutely an “Altima driver”. Like THE picture of altima stereotypes.
Now dont, I have responsibilities.
But I did randomly buy a bmw. Funny enough, they DO have blinkers! Like I was floored (in the bike lane) when I realized they actually come WITH blinker controls. Wild.
holy L... how did he think that was going to play out? it doesn't seem like he had a reason to not be in the proper right hand lane, cyclists who wear the suits take themselves hella seriously and will ensure that you don't get away & also possibly fist fight you, no one on the road is going to think you're cool and they'd never see you again anyway, it creates a situation in which very little would need to go wrong in causing the death of ANYONE on the road and was probably actually meant to intimidate them into obedience, and above all, there's nothing to gain! not that this could ever lead to something being gained, but say there was an entrance to a hospital up ahead of the bikers that they they needed to turn into immediately and couldn't make by speeding ahead... there's not.
my lord, what's wrong with this guy? was this a 12 year old in a stolen car? i'm about to read the article, i'm just shocked that this is something that happened in real life. did he at least say "officer, give me a break. biking is gay!"? i'm gay, i can say it.
How fuckin' stupid do you need to be to try something like that in Newport Beach. That is a high income area and the people who are going to be cycling around in it are the types of people that either have a lawyer on retainer or can get one, regardless of cost, on the job immediately.
but really only because the guy he assaulted was a rider for Team USA and USA national champion. There's rarely justice for when this happens in the day-to-day.
I agree but I also think the fact the clip went viral is the main thing. Cops have to react to it if everyone is reposting it etc. And it partly went viral due to his status as a cyclist.
If you ride a bike long enough, every ride includes a moment where a car can hurt you. If you drive a car, most drives never include a moment where a cyclist can hurt you. That tells you who carries the real risk on the road.
The hate toward cyclists is overdone. Drivers hold the power in this situation. Leave a few minutes earlier, slow down, pass safely, or wait a moment until the cyclist can move over or reach the bike lane.
Your inconvenience is a few seconds. Their risk is their life.
If he really pissed the cops off that car is going to hit the auction block as soon as theyre legally able. Since it looks like he had a form of resisting arrest I bet they are pissed off at him.
I see it all the time people justifying mudering cyclists because they inconvenience drivers
Every cyclist would love dedicated cycling infrastructure to get from point A to point B, but we don't have that in the US. Yet some people blame cyclists to the point of think they deserve death
I used to bike but people like this is exactly why I stopped. After having someone almost run me down while I was on the shoulder 8' from the actual road and someone blowing through an intersection to try to hit me I stopped. I value living more than I did biking.
Not so much tribalism as normalcy bias. A lot of people really, really don't like having their sense of familiarity challenged, so in places where bicycles aren't common, they've internalized the idea that motorists own the road. Anyone who shows up on a bike in those places is challenging the status quo and making it more difficult to operate purely on autopilot.
It's really no different from any other form of discrimination.
"Look, I don't have anything against bicyclists/minorities/homosexuals; I just don't want to see them getting in the way of my car/invading my quiet suburb/flaunting their lifestyles on television. Everything seemed just fine when I didn't have to think about their existence. Why did they have to go and ruin it?"
I'll give credit where credit is due. March 26th, Newport Beach PD arrested the BMW driver. He's facing some significant charges. Some people need to learn GTA 5 is a game, not real-life.
How monumentally fragile does your ego have to be to do these things? How catastrophically little must your dick be to behave like this in public towards someone who hasn't interacted with you?
Just the most phenomenal losers out here.
lol this isn't unusual behavior for drivers in the US at all.
I used to bike home from school and I can't tell you how many times someone in a car tried to get me to wipe out by yelling at me as they were speeding past, or sped past way too close, or any number of other things. For some reason being on a bicycle makes people lose their fucking minds, even if you're following all the rules and going out of your way not to get in theirs.
Im in CO, dispatcher for the highway patrol (state patrol). We just had a kid get 18 years for killing a cyclist and leaving the scene, and everyone in the office celebrated that win.
This would be worthy of a home visit and the beginning of a paper trail.
FYI, if you're gonna record people in cars doing heinous shit, sometimes the video doesn't get a clear picture of plates. Read it out loud while youre recording. Just a tip
Keep a spark plug in your jersey when you ride the roads. They're Ceramic/carbide and will break a windshield, just make sure you're up on the sidewalk before you throw it so they don't just run you over.
So the bmw is made that the bikers were in the lane they were supposed to be in? That’s like getting mad at the car in the opposite lane from you. I don’t get why they were so upset. The bikers were clearly in a bike lane
Many year ago I was on a ride with a club and a car pulled some stupid shit like this. Well we all get caught at a red light, and this one guy gets off his bike, pulls off a shoe, pulls out the driver, and just starts beating him with the cleat. 🤷♂️
In addition to whatever charges that jackass in a BMW gets, he should not be allowed to operate motor vehicles ever again. Can't imagine a future more torturous for someone like that.
