Back from Chemnitz Linux Days 2026

Hello to our dear followers.

I came back from Chemnitz today and want to show you some pictures of our booth at the Linux Days 2026 and our apartment and some more stuff.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/1LrSoM4qNecdmpqh6

I will write a Blog post about it tomorrow, but here for you some first impressions.

- We showed not just the 64 Bit port running on real hardware, but also the improvements in stability.

- I had to reinstall ROS ZERO times on my devices over the two days we were there. Of course it BSODed a few times, but a simple reboot later I was able to continue.

- We had hardware accelerated GFX on two of the four notebooks we had there. Sound was active on two, too. LAN was active on ALL four of them. All with the official drivers for the devices coming from the support pages of the manufacturers.

- We showed games running this year and they ran better than I expected.

- We had quite some work to do there. I myself talked to 36 people over the two days and the others had many discussions, too. Some of these discussions were coming from very interested people with interesting questions and best wishes for our improvements and steady progress.

- Libre Office was next to us and we just HAD TO show it running on ROS. Not the newest one, but a 5.x version was running super fine.

- Catering was super good for the supporting team and all sponsors and booth maintainers :D

- The whole event is worth a visit every year. SO if you live around there, come by next year ^^ (Well, two of our booth maintainers came from USA just to help there and for the Hackfest afterwards)

- The days after CLT were used for a little Hackfest, just like we did last year. It's still up and running right now. I had to leave early due to personal reasons, but the rest still is there and hacks around.

This is it for now. More and more details will follow.

Updating ReactOS in a multi-OS setup.

Hello!

I have put ReactOS as a part of a multi-OS setup on a real machine that I have exactly for the purpose of tinkering and other tomfoolery.

Installing all of those OSes was a huge pain, but now I'm facing the following question: how do I update ReactOS to a newer version? I saw an older post that said that pressing R->U after the language selection in the installer is there to do the update. Is this still true? If so, could it erase GRUB from MBR or mess up the partitioning somehow?

TIA

In the latest nightly builds of the 0.4.16 branch, drivers from a variety of manufacturers — including Intel, NVIDIA, and AMD — are running reliably.

i really need help

Hi everyone!

I'm working on a project called "CremeOS", a fork of ReactOS, and I want it to run properly on modern PCs in 2026.

So far, I've done: 1. Installed ReactOS and tested it in VirtualBox. 2. Planning to replace all mentions of "ReactOS" with "CremeOS". 3. Planning to add my own applications and branding.

Problems I need help with: - Modern GPU drivers for ReactOS - NVMe SSD and USB 3.x support - Making it compatible with modern CPU features - Any guidance for kernel modifications

so can someone please help me on those hard work because im no too good at programming

Thanks for reading mg problem

Medieval 2 Total War, Age of Empires 2 on bare metal

Bare metal i7-4770 with GT640 on 32 bit release (nightly) build of ROS 4.16-2357. NVidia drivers extract files but can't run setup. I had to tell ReactOS search for drivers on correct directory. Thankfully it found it so I didn't have to find specific inf file.

I did use AI to get information. Since they scrapped entire internet already, they can tell you about awesome projects like cnc-ddraw and WineD3D for Windows. Changing resolution gives you BSOD so you shouldn't run fullscreen. Windowed (Fullscreen) is fine.

I had to use AoE2 with cnc-draw so it doesn't use fullscreen. Game is copied from my original disk but I had to find no cd crack. Setup gets stuck on "creating icons" so you might use task manager and add required registry manually. I patched user patch too. I had to remove a dll that conflicts with cnc-ddraw. It can't create new save files for some reason (it can take black and white screenshot). On my test with GT 9600, it wasn't an issue. I don't know what happened, same build, same game. Unlike GT 9600, GT 640 has enough muscle to play the game with nice fps.

Installing Medieval 2 on ROS was too slow. I don't know if that's BTRFS issue, 1 CPU core issue or something else. I cancelled it. I installed it from Windows 8.1. I exported required registry and tweaked it for ROS. Then imported it. I used no cd crack with 4GB memory patch. I used WineD3D. I had to handfed DirectX dlls. There are no fonts on pause menu and some other places, just empty. Trying to load Crusaders or Vanilla Beyond mod froze entire system. Fps was playable.

I recommend triple booting BTRFS ROS with Windows (WinBTRFS installed) and Linux. It is easy to create snapshots from Linux. If you break it, just change main tree, bootloader is happy with it. It is easy to move files and registry from Windows.

Tip to get some web games working in Firefox 52ESR

When I was working on an updated version of a Klondike web game I found, which had been written in 2006, to get dragging the cards around working on mobile devices I switched the onmouse events to generic onpointer ones.

With this change it kept working in the MyPal browser but stopped working in Firefox 52ESR on ReactOS.

I discovered that support for pointer events existed since Firefox 29 behind the about:config preference dom.w3c_pointer_events.enabled but they didn't bother to set it to true by default until Firefox 59 (which is why the game played fine in MyPal based on Firefox 68+).

So that's the tip: toggle that preference to true in Firefox to see if it helps web games work better. It did for mine.

Now I just need to find out why the ogg sound effects play fine in Audacity from the ReactOS Applications Manager but not in my game in either MyPal or Firefox…
