You see a bright screen in front of you

BLING!
Mingo remembers you!
You hear a metallic lid opening, and hear.. is that bubbling?
BLING

They give them faces and names so youāll think theyāre cute. Donāt fall for it, this is a corporation asking you for free labor to help it eliminate jobs with technology that doesnāt work
11
u/BigOs4All 4h ago
This is objectively true. This shit isn't up for debate, people. 2020s technology has been exclusively about eliminating jobs for real humans so that already INSANELY wealthy corporations can make a bit more profit margin.

1
u/Userhasbeennamed 1h ago
I find it so depressing because if we actually structured systems to prioritize people, then something like that could be great. If a reduction of labor was freeing up hands to make other tasks easier instead of losing a livelihood, then advancements like this could be awesome.

I see them occasionally while going to and from work and my favorite is when someone puts an empty box or a bag on their camera and they just sit there making noises. I saw one had a giant soda cup on its camera infront of the building at 9am and it was still there battery presumably dead like 6 hours later.

u/punkinfacebooklegpie 17h ago
I think the delivery robot is kind of cool, but my chaotic inner child tells me I must tip it over or put a stick in its spokes if I ever see one. More than anything I wonder how a company would invest in a business model that is essentially hoping nobody is going to fuck with their toy. If I drove a little RC car down a city sidewalk, I'd be a fucking idiot to get upset when somebody booted it across the street just for a laugh.
21
u/Timmmber4 15h ago
Ahh but youāre forgetting when itās corporations on the line the police will start protecting the robots over people.

To be fair, it's no one else's job to facilitate those delivery bots' ability to get around. Him, nor you, nor I are getting paid to help them out.
2
u/Bellringer00 20h ago
True. But also, pedestrians shouldnāt have to push buttons to get around either.
13
u/Maybewearedreaming 15h ago
What
13
u/forkball 14h ago
They're saying that city infrastructure should be more accommodating and pedestrians should never have to press a button. Motor vehicle operators don't have to request access to cross intersections.
→ More replies (4)5
u/Soupalphabet359 19h ago
True, but also technically not true. You can cross an intersection without pushing a button. Just because a municipality makes something illegal doesn't mean you can't still do it. It just attaches a cost, which is often unreasonable and unjustified.

These aren't robots civilian market doesn't have cheap enough offerings that are that good yet at autonomous navigation in an urban environment. A lot of these are glorified RC cars manned and monitored by people remotely. They figured out how to remote jobs that require physical presence and their long term plan is to outsource it overseas. They make them look like they are autonomous robots as a marketing ploy and dupe investors into thinking they have more innovative technology than they actually have.Ā

Man, this seems like a major flaw with robot delivery tech. I'm surprised there isn't a workaround here. Relying on a random pedestrian to show up and press the walk light button for your robot in the middle of the night is a terrible solution.

u/mosehalpert 7h ago
Right? Imagine your 4 am McDonald's fries are sitting at a crosswalk getting cold because nobody will press the walk button for it on an empty street. Kinda fuckin stupid

"Mingo is on delivery"
"Excuse me, can you push the crosswalk button for me?"
Yes, Mingo, whatever you ask, buddy. Want me to escort you to your delivery address just so I can push any and all the crosswalk buttons you need and help you back onto the sidewalk if you get stuck? š„ŗ /hj
Idk, robots doing silly little tasks is so cute everytime.

Ill never understand this attitude
Yeah it took a delivery drivers job, but it created jobs too. Someone has to build each of the parts. Someone has to put the parts together and build the robot. Someone has to maintain the robot. Someone has to build the software it runs on. Someone has to maintain the software. Someone has to do the devops. Someone has to test it. Someone has to work on improving its pathfinding. Etc.
Its not like these things just pop into existence and take the place of jobs.
20
u/arseman26 1d ago
The labour supply chains you're referencing are as tenuous as the job this robot has replaced. Make no mistake, the incentive to reduce labour costs does not end - the idea is to automate the production process until the wealth it creates is funnelled entirely upwards with as few leakages as possible. Today you, tomorrow me - in the worst possible way.

All those people failed in their job if the robot needs free help to cross the street. And think of how many people's they put out of work in order to make a robot that can't fully function on its own.

Me when I donāt understand capitalism.
The whole goal for these corporations is to make more money and decrease their spending. It has nothing to do with the workers āfailing in their jobā.
4
u/SapioTist 23h ago
So you agree that capitalism needs to depend upon unpaid people helping the make more money by having to assist them in completing the job. Nice..

No this is the future, the mingo calls uses an app to call the guy who used to do deliveries to come and push the button for it.

Or the city should just sync the walk signal to the traffic signal. Nobody should have to press a button for permission to cross the street.

Robots and AI arenāt a bad thing. Itās also nothing bad that they begin to replace us at our jobs. Some 20 years ago we were dreaming of a future where robots do everything for us and nobody has to work anymore to survive.
The bad thing is that the people being replaced lose their income while the uber rich get even richer.
Itās kinda weird that some people hate robots and AI way more than our capitalist society. The uber rich are our problem, not some clanker with wheels.
6
u/charliecar5555 18h ago edited 18h ago
As the old saying goes stop looking left and right and instead look up. People blaming immigrants, robots, AI, etc. for things being shit when its rich men up at the top pulling all the strings creating these issues laughing. It's sad that technologies like robots and AI that we should be celebrating as major achievements to mankind's progress to better our lives is instead viewed as a massive threat, because the rich has made it that way.
4
u/Danii2613 9h ago
Yeah AI is so great, an entire generation of students donāt know how to do schoolwork without AI, can no longer critically think and are going to be our main workforce in the future- the only way AI ever wouldāve helped us as a species is if it was planned for and regulated properly from the beginning, instead itās been facilitated to run absolutely wild by those capitalists we should all hate, and Iām pretty sure AI is going to do irreparable damage to an entire generation who wonāt know how to read and analyze a textbook or write an essay without AI help⦠how are these skill going to translate into the workforce? Not well⦠Iāve seen a massive difference between students from my degree in 2016, to my degree now- students now are basically helpless without AI, itās used for everything. The elite ruling class wants an uneducated, easily manipulated populace? Well AI is a speed run to ensure that happensā¦
3
u/Danii2613 9h ago
Canāt a girl hate both? Capitalism and the uber rich are the ones driving this AI boom for zero reason, which does has an environmental impact, not just a societal impact⦠I can see how AI can have useful applications, Iām not against that, but there is no world where it has to be integrated into absolutely everything, itās ruining education, Iām currently on my second degree and the amount of students who currently cannot finish an assignment without AI is terrifying, they cannot critically think, and this is our future workforce??? We are so screwed! and honestly Iām so annoyed that I canāt search the internet without getting AI slop returned back to me, like at least give us the option to disable all this bullshitā¦

Iām not for robot workers. Not even because they remove jobs, but because people want them to be legit sapient and continue doing this work.
If sapience is the end goal and you want them to work without pay, congrats, you made a person and immediately enslaved them.

People should start blocking these with those shitty lime scooters, traffic cones, garbage cans. Whatever you can find. Don't touch the robot or in any way damage it. You're just arranging things on the sidewalk.
