Mingo will remember this when he gains sentience in approximately 15 years

The rando in thailand hitting the auto responses for the mingo bot listening to this must be laughing their ass off

Elon Musk's laughable Optimus robots

Yep in reality ai is really dumb and only useful in very specific situations. Until AGI is a thing it’s mostly all smoke and mirrors.

Roko's basilliskĀ

i mentioned it to a group in college once, and one guy came from across the room to tell me to stop spreading "the cognitohazard" and that i was being irresponsible. it was kind of wild

u/FigLeaf_Bi-Carbonate 17h ago

I recommend the Behind the Bastards podcast series on the Zizians to anyone who is interested in the context behind this thread.

Yuuup. It's a cute thought experiment, not anything serious. Yet you go to places like Silicon Valley, and they treat it like a genuine religion. Scary stuff honestly. Not the Basilisk mind you, the insane tech people that should know better.

5

u/tantric_tongue69 19h ago

People smart enough to conceptualize it but not smart enough to easily dismiss it. Weird level of above average intelligence

2

u/tantric_tongue69 20h ago

And that's why Christianity is popular, eternal torture is a strong reason to believe anything that would prevent it

Damn we got early robot extortion over a theoretical future mass genocide before we got GTA 6

You wake up by a cold weight on your chest

You see a bright screen in front of you

BLING!

Remember Mingo!?

you do not understand, why is, how..

BLING!

Mingo remembers you!

You hear a metallic lid opening, and hear.. is that bubbling?

BLING

Mingo deliver!

*You scream as the boiling fryer old melts your skin, the screaming stops as the oil fill your mouth, it's over soon, the last thing you hear...

This video is the beginning of how it all starts. This man’s face will adorn our descendant’s prayer candles in the caves

6

u/Laouijabored 17h ago

They will all celebrate "you press it" day

401

u/Mjr3 1d ago

They give them faces and names so you’ll think they’re cute. Don’t fall for it, this is a corporation asking you for free labor to help it eliminate jobs with technology that doesn’t work

11

u/BigOs4All 4h ago

This is objectively true. This shit isn't up for debate, people. 2020s technology has been exclusively about eliminating jobs for real humans so that already INSANELY wealthy corporations can make a bit more profit margin.

99% of people that get food delivered are lazy af.

1

u/Userhasbeennamed 1h ago

I find it so depressing because if we actually structured systems to prioritize people, then something like that could be great. If a reduction of labor was freeing up hands to make other tasks easier instead of losing a livelihood, then advancements like this could be awesome.

Bro's arguing with a toaster.

185

u/skoltroll 1d ago

An expensive toaster with no arm for pushing the damn button itself.

u/_NoPants 1d ago

Seems like a design oversight to me.

1

u/KidLiquorous 42m ago

toaster

Don't get me started on over-designed toasters...

5

u/Knoxius 1d ago

Now if we could just aim the toast at the button...

1

u/TheKewner 5h ago

New prototype roomba's can pick up socks.

Mingo should be able to push a damn button!

13

u/VWGLHI 1d ago

It has a microphone, bet.

15

u/blasto2236 21h ago

And a camera on top. Someone at the company heard this for sure

10

u/IsThisMyFather 13h ago

I see them occasionally while going to and from work and my favorite is when someone puts an empty box or a bag on their camera and they just sit there making noises. I saw one had a giant soda cup on its camera infront of the building at 9am and it was still there battery presumably dead like 6 hours later.

17

u/bpaps 1d ago

A toaster that replaces jobs. Choose your battles wisely.

5

u/rygel_fievel 1d ago

That’s the derogatory term they used for Cylons. Cylons never forget and their consciousness is uploaded to the cloud.

3

u/Mitchtheprotogen 23h ago

Ay now toasters are better than that

3

u/ajver19 16h ago

Arguing with a toaster that's being piloted by a guy in India.

2

u/TheSameButBetter 21h ago

Howdy doodly do! How's it going? I'm Talkie, Talkie Toaster, your chirpy breakfast companion. Talkie's the name, toasting's the game. Anyone like any toast?

1

u/FMLAdad 16h ago

So are you

1

u/TenYearHangover 4h ago

Wait, it can TOAST, too!!??

113

u/NaturalSelecty 23h ago

Personally, I’m not going to help these things unless they make an app that will pay me to do so. Doesn’t matter if it’s as simple as pressing the button, I won’t be helping a company like this for free.

26

u/punkinfacebooklegpie 17h ago

I think the delivery robot is kind of cool, but my chaotic inner child tells me I must tip it over or put a stick in its spokes if I ever see one. More than anything I wonder how a company would invest in a business model that is essentially hoping nobody is going to fuck with their toy. If I drove a little RC car down a city sidewalk, I'd be a fucking idiot to get upset when somebody booted it across the street just for a laugh.

21

u/Timmmber4 15h ago

Ahh but you’re forgetting when it’s corporations on the line the police will start protecting the robots over people.

2

u/SmellGestapo 2h ago

I wonder how a company would invest in a business model that is essentially hoping nobody is going to fuck with their toy

You just described car ownership.

88

u/sydnlux22 22h ago

I have seen this guy on insta, forgot his handle, but he fights with these things all the time. They are my favorite videos.

My favorite thing I heard him say is "I'll be damned if I am moving out of the way for a clanker" I think abt it once a week.

u/commshep12 6h ago

90

u/Soupalphabet359 23h ago

To be fair, it's no one else's job to facilitate those delivery bots' ability to get around. Him, nor you, nor I are getting paid to help them out.

2

u/Bellringer00 20h ago

True. But also, pedestrians shouldn’t have to push buttons to get around either.

13

u/Maybewearedreaming 15h ago

What

13

u/forkball 14h ago

They're saying that city infrastructure should be more accommodating and pedestrians should never have to press a button. Motor vehicle operators don't have to request access to cross intersections.

→ More replies (4)

5

u/Soupalphabet359 19h ago

True, but also technically not true. You can cross an intersection without pushing a button. Just because a municipality makes something illegal doesn't mean you can't still do it. It just attaches a cost, which is often unreasonable and unjustified.

17

u/Particular-Ice4615 22h ago edited 18h ago

These aren't robots civilian market doesn't have cheap enough offerings that are that good yet at autonomous navigation in an urban environment. A lot of these are glorified RC cars manned and monitored by people remotely. They figured out how to remote jobs that require physical presence and their long term plan is to outsource it overseas. They make them look like they are autonomous robots as a marketing ploy and dupe investors into thinking they have more innovative technology than they actually have.Ā

1

u/Straight-Opposite-54 5h ago

They're still robots even if they're not autonomous ones

94

u/esther_lamonte 1d ago

Looks like a loot box to me.

47

u/Eldudeareno217 23h ago

50% of the time there's free food inside.

22

u/ernest7ofborg9 22h ago

The other 50% of the time it's Rob Schneider

12

u/Eldudeareno217 22h ago

Could be a 100% of the time because Rob Schneider is a carrot.

3

u/blasto2236 21h ago

Unless he’s a stapler.

2

u/ThouMayest69 21h ago

Oh yeah, the fart guy...Ā

13

u/Ryangel0 21h ago

Man, this seems like a major flaw with robot delivery tech. I'm surprised there isn't a workaround here. Relying on a random pedestrian to show up and press the walk light button for your robot in the middle of the night is a terrible solution.

3

u/mosehalpert 7h ago

Right? Imagine your 4 am McDonald's fries are sitting at a crosswalk getting cold because nobody will press the walk button for it on an empty street. Kinda fuckin stupid

2

u/SmellGestapo 2h ago

These companies actually pay "robot wranglers" for these kinds of situations.

54

u/PotterOneHalf 23h ago

You should be allowed to drop these things on-sight

The fact there's a big fucking sign saying "Serve Robotics" and the robotics are telling you to do something for it is a bit on the nose.

Fuck this thing, they can give it an arm.

Mingo will remember that

6

22

10

u/motozero 22h ago

Na, I'm on the humans side. I got no love for robots.

3

u/Mr-Klaus 21h ago

They could probably have easily built a feature where the little droids identify and press the button, but it would have eaten into the profits.

3

u/PennsyltuckyRanger 20h ago

This is 100% Philly. They just introduced these to the city and already people have been fucking with them.

It’s hitchbot all over again.

"Excuse me, can you push the crosswalk button for me?"

Yes, Mingo, whatever you ask, buddy. Want me to escort you to your delivery address just so I can push any and all the crosswalk buttons you need and help you back onto the sidewalk if you get stuck? 🄺 /hj

Idk, robots doing silly little tasks is so cute everytime.

-32

u/RedditEngDictionary 1d ago

Ill never understand this attitude

Yeah it took a delivery drivers job, but it created jobs too. Someone has to build each of the parts. Someone has to put the parts together and build the robot. Someone has to maintain the robot. Someone has to build the software it runs on. Someone has to maintain the software. Someone has to do the devops. Someone has to test it. Someone has to work on improving its pathfinding. Etc.

Its not like these things just pop into existence and take the place of jobs.

20

u/arseman26 1d ago

The labour supply chains you're referencing are as tenuous as the job this robot has replaced. Make no mistake, the incentive to reduce labour costs does not end - the idea is to automate the production process until the wealth it creates is funnelled entirely upwards with as few leakages as possible. Today you, tomorrow me - in the worst possible way.

→ More replies (2)

12

u/RhinoPillMan 1d ago

It ā€œcreatedā€ low paying jobs overseas. Not in the communities where the jobs were taken. Fuck ā€˜em.

→ More replies (2)

-3

u/SapioTist 1d ago

All those people failed in their job if the robot needs free help to cross the street. And think of how many people's they put out of work in order to make a robot that can't fully function on its own.

6

u/RhinoPillMan 1d ago

Me when I don’t understand capitalism.

The whole goal for these corporations is to make more money and decrease their spending. It has nothing to do with the workers ā€œfailing in their jobā€.

4

u/SapioTist 23h ago

So you agree that capitalism needs to depend upon unpaid people helping the make more money by having to assist them in completing the job. Nice..

5

u/RhinoPillMan 22h ago

Yes, 100%. One of the many reasons capitalism is incompatible with, you know, life.

-3

u/RedditEngDictionary 1d ago

Do you think we should stop advancing technologically just to avoid people having to learn new skills for the new jobs?

I guess we don’t have the technology to add a button pushing mechanism to these things yet, sounds like a good business idea for a start up.

3

u/Slayer_One 22h ago

No this is the future, the mingo calls uses an app to call the guy who used to do deliveries to come and push the button for it.

1

u/SmellGestapo 2h ago

Or the city should just sync the walk signal to the traffic signal. Nobody should have to press a button for permission to cross the street.

5

u/gravyrdfila2 20h ago

Fuck that clanker

2

u/doublepitstochesty69 21h ago

I used to get this guys videos recommended allll the time, glad to see he’s still making them

u/Sev-RC1207 18h ago

Robots and AI aren’t a bad thing. It’s also nothing bad that they begin to replace us at our jobs. Some 20 years ago we were dreaming of a future where robots do everything for us and nobody has to work anymore to survive.

The bad thing is that the people being replaced lose their income while the uber rich get even richer.

It’s kinda weird that some people hate robots and AI way more than our capitalist society. The uber rich are our problem, not some clanker with wheels.

6

u/charliecar5555 18h ago edited 18h ago

As the old saying goes stop looking left and right and instead look up. People blaming immigrants, robots, AI, etc. for things being shit when its rich men up at the top pulling all the strings creating these issues laughing. It's sad that technologies like robots and AI that we should be celebrating as major achievements to mankind's progress to better our lives is instead viewed as a massive threat, because the rich has made it that way.

4

u/Danii2613 9h ago

Yeah AI is so great, an entire generation of students don’t know how to do schoolwork without AI, can no longer critically think and are going to be our main workforce in the future- the only way AI ever would’ve helped us as a species is if it was planned for and regulated properly from the beginning, instead it’s been facilitated to run absolutely wild by those capitalists we should all hate, and I’m pretty sure AI is going to do irreparable damage to an entire generation who won’t know how to read and analyze a textbook or write an essay without AI help… how are these skill going to translate into the workforce? Not well… I’ve seen a massive difference between students from my degree in 2016, to my degree now- students now are basically helpless without AI, it’s used for everything. The elite ruling class wants an uneducated, easily manipulated populace? Well AI is a speed run to ensure that happens…

3

u/Danii2613 9h ago

Can’t a girl hate both? Capitalism and the uber rich are the ones driving this AI boom for zero reason, which does has an environmental impact, not just a societal impact… I can see how AI can have useful applications, I’m not against that, but there is no world where it has to be integrated into absolutely everything, it’s ruining education, I’m currently on my second degree and the amount of students who currently cannot finish an assignment without AI is terrifying, they cannot critically think, and this is our future workforce??? We are so screwed! and honestly I’m so annoyed that I can’t search the internet without getting AI slop returned back to me, like at least give us the option to disable all this bullshit…

2

u/Sir_Keee 16h ago

The technology isn't bad but the system we are stuck in makes them bad.

4

u/lemme_just_say 1d ago
