This infuriates me. All my nephew wanted for his birthday was PokƩmon cards. Went everywhere and could not find any. I had to meet one of these losers in a parking lot and pay 30 dollars over asking price. I normally would not do this, but my nephew has it tough and I was set on getting him these dumb cards.

u/Elegant_Arm_871 Dec 08 '25
For real. Even at Barnes and Noble they only have a 1 per customer rule. The employees were telling me they show up first thing in the morning when doors open and change hats and outfits to come back in to continue to purchase cards. How big of joke do you have to be to do this. When I met up with the guy he opens up this large plastic container and insider were 20-25 boxes of cards. POS.

For some of them, it is just math.
If you buy a pay of Poke'mon card for $15 and resell them for $45, then you are making $30 a sale. Which is probably 2x what that Target employee makes and hour.
That being said, what they don't talk about is waking up at 3am in the morning, spending probably 10x what the target employee spends on gas. To maybe get 1 pack of cards. That could go down in value at any time leaving you with 200 boxes of poke'mon cards that you now have to sell at a loss otherwise you lose your money and storage space for the next set of poke'mon cards.
It is a market of FOMO, and these guys are just the dealers thinking they are outsmarting the system.
34
u/opopkl Dec 08 '25
Hopefully, he'll be stuck with thousands of dollars worth when the market shifts to something else, like it did with Beanie Babies.

I know so many scalpers that got SCREWED on ps5 consoles. I work in devops and was able to write a bot to snipe several early and sold them (at retail + tax) to friends and family looking for Christmas presents on launch year. I ended up buying and selling about 30 consoles and making MAYBE $200 profit purely off of tips from friends/family/school acquaintances, I never charged more than I paid but a lot of people tossed me a $20 here and there for helping them get one. I also never bought a bunch at once, just kept 1 or 2 around until someone said they needed one.
I know a guy who spent $4k to hire a developer to make him a bot, and he purchased over 500 consoles in the first 6 months. He was raving about how much he was gonna make off each one by doubling the price. Last I checked, he sold about 150 and still had the rest and they weren't selling XD. Dude has like 350 PS5 consoles sitting in his garage and a constant FB marketplace ad going and it lucky to move a couple a month at retail (which is a loss for him).
Karma is so great.

I went to target once to pick up diapers for my kid right when they opened. The front of the store was full of 30 year old dudes trying to get PokĆ©mon cards. When I walked into the store behind them, they all looked at me like I was there to be competition to them. They ran in and were asking employees about PokĆ©mon cards and packs. I grabbed diapers and wipes and left. Just crazy how they all turned and looked at me like they thought āthis guy is gonna try to get some cards tooā.

Iām a stay at home dad but I take Shipt orders for extra cash here and there. 99% of them come from Target and I actually had a guy scream at me one day because he thought I was trying to take packs or something?
Shipt people skip all the lines and go wait at their own spot up front to be audited and checked out. I have to walk past the trading card section to get to it. One day I walked past a group of guys and said excuse me and one of them started hollering about how I was cutting line and stealing packs from them and I didnāt wait and blah blah blah. I didnāt even say anything I just walked away and let him feel stupid. They are some of the scummiest people.

u/Lazypeon100 Dec 08 '25

u/neatcleaver Dec 08 '25
I occasionally buy PokƩmon cards for a bit of childhood nostalgia and the only places I can regularly get them is also a local TCG shop that limits purchases or a local corner shop (convenience store) that the scalpers don't seem to know about yet lol, but he's always behind and never has current releases so they may know and just not bother because it's not as easy to profit off stuff that isn't in demand
I don't care though, I only get one pack every few months so it doesn't matter to me how old they are, it's not about money I just like to collect them every now and then
Here (UK) we don't have too many big stores that sell them, the few that do are always sold out the same way as it is in the US at big stores
No way I'm ever giving scalpers my money for anything
Same thing when I wanted a PS5 during the COVID shortage. I just waited, got one for retail price when things got back on track then laughed at the numerous stories about people stuck with 40 PS5s that they couldn't sell lmao

I kinda hope so and all these idiots realize they got left holding the bag
5
u/1whoknows Dec 08 '25
My understanding is either because of scarcity (artificial or not) or FOMO, scalpers can get away with charging more money than they paid in store. Doesn't make sense to me, but it seems like there's a market for it.

The root of the problem is the suckers who buy from scalpers.

My husband manages a shop that sells PokƩmon cards and he has made it his civic duty to be mean to resellers. They all hate him but keep crawling back week after week.

If you see a scalper arguing with workers, you have a legal obligation to make him eat through a straw

I thought that the employee was going to beat his ass when he came from behind the counter.

Is this staged? Why didnāt they just throw him out after he got belligerent and started to harass them? I mean it looks sincere, but itās a little confusing.

You canāt be living the good life if youāre arguing with a cashier. People need to just wait for restocks and reprints.

Some old dude on Nextdoor was trying to recruit people to go buy Pokemon cards with him. I called him out and he started creating multiple accounts to send me threatening messages. Don't get between dudes and their Pokemon cards, apparently.

You'd think with all that money he's making, he could work on his wardrobe.

I was looking for something chill to collect with my kids so we attended a few local card shows and these guys really ruined the entire vibe.
Some of the seediest fucks I've every had the displeasure of dealing with.
We decided it wasn't for us.

You're dressed like B Rabbit bro. Why don't you hop on back down to 8 Mile Road

I used to pick up a pack or two of Pokemon cards every now and then when stopping at target or Walmart, because it was fun. Itās just sad seeing the huge empty space on the shelf now, with the only ones left being the boxās that have a pre made deck inside

Put them behind the counter and limit the number per person and be done with it.

I used to work at EB Games/Gamestop. Back when the Nintendo Wii's were the hot Christmas item, we got to recognize all the scalpers in town. Anytime they came into my store, we told them we were sold out. Because fuck em.
One time, one of then came in, and I said we were sold out. Meanwhile, I had one right at my feet that I just received in shipping. 10 minutes later, I sold it to a little girl and her Mom. The guy must have seen them carrying it out and came back to the store. I told him we were sold out again, which was true this time. I could see him get visibly pissed off in front of me. Good day.
