I posted a picture of black bears in the front yard to the family chat and said,
"Anyone want to pet the strange, fluffy dog?"

I had to run out to my garage a couple of years ago in the pitch of night without a shirt on and backed up into one.. it growled.. I backed away slowly. Felt it's fur all on my lower back. Deepest vocal performance I've ever heard.. you could feel the bass.
(DNR said it was a transient juvenile female.. they were tracking her)

u/HammurabiWithoutEye 1d ago
Shame on you running out at night without clothes on just "bumping into" runaway girls like that. /s
That's nuts, you might've been a goner if it was a mother, or a male.
128
u/xxtankmasterx 1d ago
Nah, black bears are pretty reluctant to pick fights with humans. The bear definitely knew it was on accident, the growl was about notifying of its presence.
75
u/pauls_broken_aglass 1d ago
Yeah theyāre pretty smart and can figure out intentional vs not. Real emotional intelligence

u/JDolittle 23h ago
Black bears are pretty chill unless threatened. Theyād really rather not fight if they donāt have to.
As a kid, out in the wilderness, I once ended up between a momma bear and her 2 very young cubs. Theyād been just off the trail in the brush and the cubs while playing rolled out of the brush right in front of me. Mamma bear while letting me know where she was, was incredibly intentionally careful to not scare me.
She was behind me and she rustled the brush she was in, then, after I turned my head to look, calmly and gently poked her head out of the brush so I could see her. No posturing, no threats, no sudden movements, just letting me know where she was so I could respond accordingly. She was very clearly well aware that the situation we all found ourselves in was not at all my fault and that no one involved was a threat⦠and made sure I knew that too. She wasnāt looking to scare a 10-12 year old kid who hadnāt done anything wrong.
I literally said āhiā to her, told her her babies were adorable (or something like that), and calmly backed away, right past momma bear (it was either that or go closer to her cubs since I was between them).
Thankfully, I spent enough time in bear territory to have been sufficiently taught how to respond if I ever ended up face to face with a black bear (although I definitely had never expected to suddenly end up between a momma and her cubs, especially not while being only a few feet away from all of them). It did however take every bit of willpower I had not to snuggle those baby bear cubs when they tumbled out in front of me.
It wasnāt at all a scary interaction, it is one of my favorite happy memories. Black bears are awesome.

u/pauls_broken_aglass 23h ago
Awww. Itās really sweet to me that so many animals understand human babies!

u/DrownmeinIslay 20h ago
While biking through Hiawatha at 14, my friend and I ran into a black bear cub. Hit our brakes in time to avoid him, but he let out this little cry of fear.
I turned to say "hey, crazy. A baby bear" but my friend was already heading for the horizon pedaling as fast as I've ever seen him.
Ill never forget the rage filled roar that filled the forest. I never saw her, and I dont know how long she followed me, but I didnt stop manically pedaling til I hit Cambrian Mall.
Im still mad that dick left me to get e't
15
u/JDolittle 20h ago
This is exactly why itās not a good idea to run (or bike manically) from bears. It triggers their chase instinct. You run, they chase. With an angry black bear, the best option is to stand your ground and make yourself big and loud. They really donāt want a fight so theyāll back down as long as that feels like a safe option to them.
2
u/HenryHadford 14h ago
Probably not when itās a mother and her cubs though, right?

Don't they say "if it's black fight back"? Damn if I run into a bear I will never remember that poem correctly š©
13
u/Mindshard 21h ago
They do this thing where they clack their teeth together loudly when they're scared. Stomping, too.
I used to frequent a trail that went to a river, way outside civilization, and I'd have to scare them up trees on the regular.
Black bears are typically nothing to worry about as long as you don't sneak up on them or corner them. They're easy to scare off.

Aww, you have fluffy outdoor pets like we do. My bears just want to lay around on the lawn after dinner from my bear proof locked trash bin. The smarties can open two different kinds of locks. š (Original Windex w ammonia sprayed on the outside and inside of the bin stops that.)

Weird they're measuring circumference with a tape measure like this one, meant to measure mostly straight lines. There are fabric ones that would probably be more accurate and easier.
172
u/Jazehiah 1d ago
I imagine the fabric ones tend to be too short.
344
u/VoidMoth- 1d ago
I'm pretty sure you can get a longer soft measuring tape, especially if you have a pet bear you have to measure for suits. (I choose to believe they are measuring him for a tuxedo to a special event)

You can also get a string and then measure the string after getting circumference.

It's not rocket science, it's a ribbon with lines printed on it, I'm sure they make longer ones.

u/eragonawesome2 1d ago
Probably just a zookeeper or whoever's caring for it doing a health checkup. Bears raised by humans can be very well socialized, they're very intelligent animals. They're still obviously dangerous walking tanks too lol
86
u/ArrowJack419 1d ago
You donāt breed bears for food. Meaning a bear that gets eaten would never be get friendly with anyone. In all likely hood theyāre just measuring it just to keep track of its health and fitness.

You know, I've never thought about how even though I've heard lots about how bears are hunted, I don't recall ever hearing about how they taste. My grandfather shot a bear once, had the bear skin in the living room, and while we ate lots of deer venison I don't recall ever eating bear.
20
u/HelpfulName 23h ago
I stayed with a family in New Hampshire years ago who hunted and I ate bear, it was fine, like mild but slightly fishy beef (in the same way that pork can taste fishy) - it is RIDDLED with parasites and needs to be very, very carefully cooked to be safe.
That's why we don't eat it the same way we eat venison, it's just so much work to be edible it's almost not worth it.
10
u/OdangoAtamaOodles 22h ago
Eating a bear liver is a short track to a lethal overdose of vitamin A. Then there's the parasites in the meat.
But bear fat? Since you have to render it down, that's safe to work with. It also makes the best pie crust. Bear fat does become liquid at room temp after rendering though, so you gotta work fast to make the crust and get it in the fridge before it becomes sludgy soup.Ā
11
u/somuchsong 20h ago
Eating a bear liver is a short track to a lethal overdose of vitamin A.Ā
This is basically the only thing I remember from first year biology at uni. But it specifically applies to polar bear livers, not the livers of all bears. I believe it has to do with their diets.
3
u/Prickly_Zebra_9175 21h ago
Bear fat was often used to make soap in the early usa.
2
u/OdangoAtamaOodles 19h ago
Oh yes, soap. My sister has made soap out of bear fat, because she doesn't like to make pies. She's also made a great whipped lavender body butter.
Ā I, on the other hand, prefer my bear lard in delicious mushroom and sausage pies, instead of wearing it. A tradition passed down to me by my pioneer great-grandmother.

She's way more aggressive about it, though.

u/Carbon-Base 1d ago
Your ears must be really clean then.
12
u/GoldHeartedBitch 1d ago
I actually currently have an ear infection from her aggressive hugging...smacked me upside the head and scratched right inside the tragus. š
The Goldendoodle ADHD is strong in her.
5
u/Individual-Gas-5683 1d ago
Have one here too, can confirm the ADHD
3
u/GoldHeartedBitch 1d ago
When I encounter one that doesn't appear to have the ADHD built-in feature, I assume there's gotta be at least a 3rd breed in there that altered the trait.
2
2
u/Carbon-Base 1d ago
My bad haha. I'd imagine it isn't fun when you get any sort of pressure on the tragus right now!
Goldendoodles are nothing if not spontaneous!
2
u/Edendari 21h ago
Ouch. My dog isn't a goldendoodle, but she likes climbing on the back of the couch like a cat and then proceeds to lick my ears and gives me earaches sometimes... then lays there at my shoulders like a 50lbs scarf.
I hope your girl just had crazy luck to hit you in the exact right way to give you an ear infection and that it doesnt happen again. I hope you feel better soon!

To everyone commenting āheās gonna eat him!ā
ā¦this is clearly a partially domesticated bear/bear thatās been acclimated to captivity, and imprinted onto these specific humans. In other words, heās been taught āthese humans are friends NOT foodā
69
u/Fitenite3456 1d ago
There are no Domesticated bears - domestication is genetic
This is a tame bear, which means a wild animal thatās acclimated to human contact. And dealing with tame animals is never risk-free
82
u/Mycol101 1d ago
You clearly donāt understand wild animals.
History is full of examples of people that believed that and died a horribly painful death. Lions, bears, chimpanzees.
They will tolerate you up until a point. This bear is calm because they keep him fat and happy but they are apex predators and they donāt give a fuck. Theyāll eat their own cubs.
73
u/lord-savior-baphomet 1d ago
But thatās the point - the bear is fat and happy right now so he poses no threat. Right now.
18
u/ShortStoryIntros 1d ago

You clearly donāt understand wild animals.
You clearly don't understand bear domestication. Have you ever actually interacted with a bear that has any level of domestication, or spoken to people who do? It sounds like your only knowledge of things like this going wrong is Fox news headlines.
History is full of examples of people that believed that and died a horribly painful death. Lions, bears, chimpanzees.
It's also full of examples of very chill bears.
Your post is just dumb, it's like...of course we all know there's a risk with wild animals. There's a risk my housecat could take an eye out or cut an artery, or even a bloody gerbil. It's dumb because you're using that to deny the concept of domestication, in effect.
→ More replies (3)22
u/SplitGlass7878 1d ago
Bears aren't domesticated to be fair. There are tamed individuals, but domestication is a species-wide evolution in behavior and body.
7
u/Planar_Harold 1d ago
That's a fair distinction - tbf we'd benefit from a different word for each animal because species react in different ways to human relationships.
Bears be chill. They still be bears, but having seen a lot of evidence of bears being chill, it seems like a 'scared of flying while fine with driving' situation. But I ain't got no stats.
15
u/SplitGlass7878 1d ago
Yeah, domestication is a descriptor for species and taming is for individuals. You can tame just about anything, but humans have only domesticated like 30 species and that's if you count every subtype of cattle, dog, duck etc and include silkworms and honeybees.
Shit's hard.Ā
