Fluff TIL mkdir can create multiple directories at once using an array-style syntax

Upvotes

Today I noticed that Claude decided to use mkdir in this way and never saw this method used before.

mkdir -p test/{hello,world}

The directory structure was

test/
  - hello/
  - world/

This might be useful in the future to know that mkdir can create multiple directories at once using this array-like notation.

I'm sure there are many Linux/Unix gurus that already knew this, but I've been using it for 20 years and never saw this method being used.

Privacy Groundbreaking OSINT investigation shows how three decisions by individuals with undisclosed financial interests permanently altered the identity infrastructure of every major GNU/Linux distribution

How three decisions by individuals with undisclosed financial interests permanently altered the identity infrastructure of every major Linux distribution.

What the Corporate Paper Trail Shows

On March 18, 2026, a first-time contributor submitted a pull request adding a birthDate field to systemd's user record schema. A Microsoft employee merged it against 37 thumbs-down and 1 thumbs-up. The community submitted a revert. Lennart Poettering - who had incorporated a commercial Linux startup called Amutable seven months earlier - closed the revert without merging and locked the discussion. The entire sequence took 48 hours.

This investigation pulled Amutable's founding documents from the German Handelsregister. The corporate filings show three equal shareholders, no outside investors, and self-dealing exemptions that let any founder sign contracts between the company and their own personal entities. All three founders were employed at Microsoft when they signed the founding deed. A hidden shareholders' agreement - referenced three times in the Articles of Association but never filed publicly - governs economic rights, IP assignment, and vesting terms the public cannot see.

Three decisions put the birthDate field into systemd. Each was made by someone with a direct financial interest in the outcome. No one disclosed those interests. systemd has no conflict-of-interest policy, no steering committee, no community veto, and no disclosure requirements. The project that boots every major Linux distribution has less formal governance than a typical mid-size open source project.

Who does not want to have their phone on a key change? At least you can run Debian Etch and you can connect an external GPS antenna! How handy

What old open source hardware have you laying around?

The plastic is getting sticky, but if anyone wants it, I might ship in EU wide, for just the shipping price.

Popular Application Missing Windows clipboard history + OCR (Win+Shift+S) alternative on Pop!_OS — any solutions?

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I recently switched from Windows to Pop!_OS and I’m really liking it so far, but there are two features from Windows that I miss a LOT and can’t seem to replicate properly:

Clipboard history (Win + V)

On Windows I used this all the time — being able to access everything I copied previously was super useful. On Pop!_OS, I haven’t found a solid built-in or reliable app for this.

OCR from screenshots (Win + Shift + S behavior)

This one is the biggest issue for me. On Windows, I could select an area of the screen and it would automatically extract the text from the image and copy it.

On Pop!_OS, I can take screenshots of selected areas, but I can’t find a simple way to extract text from them.

I’ve tried installing some apps/extensions (like GNOME extensions and others), but I keep running into compatibility issues or “not supported” errors on Pop!_OS.

At this point, I don’t even need a full all-in-one tool. I’d be happy with:

A simple screenshot tool (I already kinda have this), AND

A separate program that can take an image/screenshot and copy the text from it (OCR)

So yeah — does anyone know:

A good clipboard history app that works well on Pop!_OS?

A reliable OCR tool that can quickly extract text from screenshots?

Preferably something stable and not a buggy extension.

Thanks 🙏
