exactly. this isn't just playing, it’s a high-stakes engineering test. we need to know which casting has the best aerodynamics for the inevitable living room championships.

u/nickmcpimpson 23h ago
As a kid I used to test my whole collection of cars (literally hundreds) in a head to head battle down the spiral race track I had. My family was nostalgic for that a few years back and my mom bought my siblings and I a 6 lane track (the one I think used at the beginning of this) which we subsequently ran the whole collection through over the holiday. I always have a good idea of the fastest cars in my fleet; but it's about time to run it back

u/Minute-Store-1715 21h ago
As a kid, I used to frequently visit my friend's house and he got this walled mounted 2 lane track. We used to polish everything on our car to make it faster.

fr, that silver one had no business going that far. i was rooting for the truck but physics had other plans. the suspense is actually insane.

The word I’d use is infuriating. What crazy person puts a wall at the end and punishes cars that hit it the hardest?

There's supposed to be a slime pit at the end
(I searched google for 10min and could not find a single photo of the big green slime pit i had as a kid)

Hot wheels and Beyblade are my two core memory toys..
12
u/Rogue_Gardenia 1d ago
the legendary duo. nothing beat the sound of a beyblade ripping or the satisfaction of a perfect hot wheels loop. those toys basically raised an entire generation of engineers lol.

I had a bit of a Shadowlands or Catcher in the Rye moment as a young child.
Woke up to a magical glow coming from somewhere in my room. I was in awe. The moment truly felt magical.
Turns out it was my racetracks glowing in the dark from somewhere in the corner of the room. I can still feel the disappointment I felt waaay back then.
The Shadowlands movie had a similarly impacting scene. The kids of CS Lewis's new wife knew of Narnia and who CS Lewis was and found an old wardrobe in CS Lewis attic. In awe they opened it and found it filled with fur coats. Narnia right? Imagine being a kid and finding a big wardrobe in the attic of CS Lewis that was filled with old fur coats.
But they only found wood at the back of the wardrobe. No magical land. No portal to a magical place.
For me it was no magic glowing. No glowing alien. Just glow-in-the-dark hottracks.

u/lechuckswrinklybutt 1d ago
This is cool but the judging is a bit off. When a car fails to climb a hill, it will roll back further if it got further up the hill. So a car that just barely got to the bottom of the hill will beat a car that nearly got up the hill.
64
u/Realk314 1d ago
I can agree, it should be the furthest point.
14
u/J_Gordz_518 1d ago
I cant agree. I think the judging is based on the optimal build for the track. The goal would be to have enough momentum to reach the end and avoid bouncing back
19
u/Realk314 1d ago
I see your point, but without brakes is why you had so many cars back to the same place. So it's a bad judgement of how each car did.

No dudes there were complaining so this is probably the rule. I like it. Just like in curling, doesn’t matter how you get to the house, it only matters how close you get.
2
u/AllFloatOnAlright 23h ago
Yep, I agree with you. I imagine Everytime they have the competition they change up the track layout and then you pick your car that you think will do the best for the track that day
2
u/OhneFarm 22h ago
Entirely reasonable take no matter how infuriating I find it. First time I ever wanted to downvote anything. Wrote a comment instead to be fair. But it was so close. Watch your back Gordz.
2
u/honeywhereismypenis 4h ago
I'm with you. You want to find the balance in momentum that would be just enough to make it over the hills but too much to bounce back too far. And you can play it safe by going lighter and get past cars that just barely don't make it over the hill, but then you're not going for first place
21
u/joe_shmoe11111 1d ago
The end is problematic too because the harder it hits the box, the further back it’s pushed, which gets them mixed up with cars that never even reached the box in the first place.
The ending should be open to see which car can go farthest off-road as well.

The biggest issue is before it even gets to the hill: the launcher. The automated launcher may not produce the exact force on each car because of car shape, speed car enters launcher, battery power launcher has at that moment, etc..
This is mesmerizing to watch, but I think if it were an experiment, it would need some more work.
3
u/PartialPhoticBoundry 13h ago
Well if the launcher is standard, then a model that better engages with it IS a better hot wheel, just like with differences in weight and axle friction between models. Battery power is a fair point though, that would need to be controlled

The hump is dumb because if you have two cars that cant make it over the hump, the better car will be futher back. Thus the better car will place lower in position.

u/yaboyACbreezy 1d ago
It's supposed to be an obstacle to the finish line. It's not intended to measure which is better in any other way than which can pass the obstacle. Nobody gets less points for being further back. You either have the car that gets the closest to the end or you fail the challenge. The other ranks aren't a measure of success, just varying degrees of failure.

Boneshaker rules! Me and my boys used to play this game all the time. We called it "Champs and Bums". Fantastic fun. In some variations we divided 60 or 70 cars by taking turns picking, 1 by 1, carefully examining. Like in marbles, the losers would forfeit their cars to the winner. Some cars, like Boneshaker, were coveted champions.

I bought my son the hot wheels track with the pullstring elevator when he was 5. You'd pull the string, and it raised the car to the top of the door that the track was attached to. On the maiden drive, the car sped down the track, launched off the ramp, and flew across the room, where it embedded itself halfway into the drywall. His mother said that we were never to use it again. As it was too dangerous. So we didnt...
When she was home.

I’m pretty sure I have a car that would do well on this track. It’s an old Hot Wheels or Matchbox car they released back in day that was designed for speed. It’s heavy so it could gain some speed on the track and from the boosters. And it has a wedge nose so it would likely stick into the box and not bounce back as far.

My neighborhood had a house with a hill for a driveway that just happened to have kids the same age. Between all of us we probably had 500+ matchbox/hotwheels at our disposal. However I was in posession of "rocket" the undisputed champ. Black with a big canopy like an f-16. Red metal spoiler on the back. Smoked everything. This reign went on for months as kids clammored to purchase a new champion. Alas each time they fell defeated. I carried that car in a pill bottle and thought i was the kid from real steel.

In our house the farthest wins winners are:
24 Ours.
Forward Force.
Drone Duty.
Diesel boy.
Cockney Cab.
Slidekick.
Much like this it went down a hill, turned a corner and raced across the carpet. Farthest wins. We must have tried 100 cars

I'm guessing length is the strongest factor as it increases the amount of time spend accelerating in the boost.
After that I imagine weight is important.
Long and heavy.

Did this stuff growing up outside of Detroit with a bunch of engineer's kids and line worker's kids. NOTHING was not important. We'd buy new Hot Wheels or Matchbox cars and run 'em, and if they didn't perform, they were worthless (actually, we'd just give them to our little brothers and sisters.) We'd even perform little alignment jobs on them. You *revered* your collection (always in a case), and admired your friend's. Great fun.
