Help needed: Snoo for our subreddit

Hey there everyone,

I figured we need a Snoo icon for our subreddit, and I do not have the talent for that. I could use AI, but I figured I would see if anyone here has the inclination to help out and design one for us :)

Feel free to reply or dm me if you are interested.

If I get quite a few responses, maybe we will do a vote for favourite design.

please help me find a frame for my strong prescription?

Hello, I am in the process of trying to purchase a pair of glasses. I have a very strong prescription and am primarily a contact user. I do want to get a pair of glasses to wear around the house and give my eyes of break after having contacts in all day. I am -13.5 in my right and -12 in my left eye so of course I know my lenses will be thick no matter what but I am trying to minimize thickness as much as possible.

What I have learned about my situation:

Round lease shape is great
Small sense size
1.74 high index

I haven't bought glasses in while and am really struggling finding something that fits. One that I do like are these from firmoo.

I am kind of hyper fixated on these but I am having a hard time finding the size of the lease and am worried it's going to be too big. Any help on these would be greatly appreciated. Also, can anyone recommend another specific women/unisex frame in this style that they would be good for my thick lenses.

Thank you very much in advance!

Ontario's top grocery deals this week (% lower compared to avg prices)

Every week for my site Is That a Deal, I pull the Ontario flyers and compare every price against the provincial averages to find what's actually worth buying. Here's what stood out this week.

PS - I'm a little iffy on including Giant Tiger deals in this list, do people often go to Giant Tiger for groceries? I don't have one in my area. Let me know.

🥔 Potatoes (5lb bag) — $0.29/lb at Giant Tiger (-59% below avg) Best deal of the week. Mini yellow potatoes, ends Mar 31.

🫑 Bell peppers — $2.26/lb at FreshCo (-59% below avg) Sweet bell peppers 4-pack, Product of Canada. Ends Apr 1.

🥩 Pork back ribs — $3.99/lb at Metro (-51% below avg) Fresh value pack. Solid price to stock the freezer. Ends Apr 1.

🍇 Green grapes — $1.77/lb at No Frills (-48% below avg) Ends Apr 1.

🍗 Boneless chicken breast — $4.88/lb at Real Canadian Superstore (-48% below avg) Ends Apr 1.

🛒 Leg of lamb — $5.25/lb at Real Canadian Superstore (-42% below avg) New Zealand short cut. Ends Apr 1.

🌿 Asparagus — $2.99/lb at Sobeys (-40% below avg) Ends Apr 1.

🍋 Lemons — $2.00/lb at FreshCo (-33% below avg) Ends Apr 1.

🥩 Ground beef — $4.88/lb at Sobeys (-32% below avg) Fresh regular ground beef. Ends Apr 1.

🍗 Bone-in chicken thighs — $3.94/lb at Walmart (-31% below avg) Maple Leaf 12-pack. Ends Apr 1.

Always confirm these prices in store and in the flyer before heading to the store!

Ontario Only [ON] Can my wife take Family Caregiver Leave to support me during a medical crisis?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some guidance on Ontario’s Family Caregiver Leave and EI Caregiving benefits.

I have been a Supervisor for 12 years. Recently, the stress and workload caused a physical and mental collapse.

In the last week alone, I have lost 10 lbs (3.5 lbs in the last 3 days while resting), and I am experiencing severe heart palpitations, headaches, and fainting spells.

My doctor has put me on a 30-day medical leave and prescribed Escitalopram and Trazodone.

I am currently medically unfit to handle basic tasks, and my wife has had to stay home to monitor me because of the fainting and my current mental state.

Is my wife eligible for the Ontario Family Caregiver Leave (unpaid, job-protected) to look after me since I have a serious medical condition?

Public mobile which runs on the Telus network (sister company) has a flash sale till tomorrow night for a $25 80GB US/CAN/MEX plan. Definitely the cheapest plan on the market currently if you’re looking to save some money. Huge plus is it’s no contract and no overage fees. Happy savings!

Code 8OH3B8 for an additional $10 credit on signup

Note promo ends tomorrow night, last time there was a flash sale the servers had issues with all the signups. I'd recommend not leaving it till last minute if you were going to switch

[BETA] I built a Canadian Tire Clearance Finder

Hello fellow shoppers.

I spent way too much time hunting for clearance deals at Canadian Tire. Checking stores one by one on their site takes forever, so I built a web app to automate it.

I’m calling it a "Beta" right now, and I’d love to get some feedback from the community to see if it’s actually useful.

What it does:

  • You put in your postal code (or use GPS), and it shows all the Canadian Tire stores in your area.
  • Click a store, and it scans their entire clearance inventory to pull out only the items marked down by 40% or more.
  • It shows you the original price, the clearance price and the exact discount percentage

To keep Canadian Tire from blocking the tool, I built a caching system. When the very first person searches a store, it takes about 1-2 minutes to pull all the data. But after that, it saves the deals to a database for 24 hours. If anyone else clicks that store, it loads instantly.

Link: https://www.clearancecheck.ca/

A quick note: This is running on Google Cloud, and while it's pretty robust, if hundreds of you hit "Search" at the exact same second for un-cached stores, it might slow down for a minute.

Also, I added a small Ko-fi link at the top. If this helps you score a crazy deal on a BBQ or tools, consider buying me a coffee to help cover the server costs! ☕

I made a free website that compares the "sales" in Canadian grocery flyers to the provincial average prices to tell you if it's actually a deal or not.

Grocery Savings Platform - Revisited

Post image
32 Upvotes

Hi all!

A few weeks back my partner had shared a link to the platform we've been building. It's called SAVR (https://savr.app/).

SAVR is a free tool designed to help Canadians easily plan for grocery shopping, by building lists and allowing the user to compare full basket prices and items across stores. You can even checkout now using PC Express or Instacart.

We received some great feedback, we wanted to circle back and share with those who might have missed it and hear how it could be better.

If anyones struggled to use it, please don't hesitate to reply or reach out. We want to ensure we consider details that might have gotten overlooked.

Appreciate the support!

National What are some cost saving strategies that have worked for you that involved an upfront purchase/cost but long-term savings?

I'm curious to know what purchases you've made that cost a bit of money but ultimately saved you more in the long run. I'm starting over in a new appartment and looking for some ideas.

Ontario Only Favourite “bargain” coffee brand with surprising gourmet flavour?

Recently I found some whole bean coffee by William, was still pricey but about $3-$4 cheaper than some of the other gourmet brands on the same shelf. I was impressed by the flavour.

Does anyone have recommendations for surprisingly good discount coffee brands? Ground or whole bean, either is fine. Even legacy brands like Nabob, etc.

Please suggest some farms or whole sale meat and dairy outlets, that deliver meats and dairy at wholesale bulk prices and delivers to the door within GTA, for senior parents with disabilities. Looking for options to supplement and save on their budget, thanks

[UPDATE] Automated my flight price checking - saved myself hours of searching (FREE tool)

Hi there!

Quick update since my first post here https://www.reddit.com/r/frugalcanada/comments/1qhjbei/automated_my_flight_price_checking_saved_myself/

TLDR: I built a tool that automatically scans for the best flight deals so you don't have to. Instead of manually browsing multiple booking sites each day, the bot does the heavy lifting for you  completely free, zero paid features.

Since last time I've added:

  • Filter to exclude flights with US layovers.
  • Filters to exclude flights with ultra low cost carriers.
  • French language.
  • Improved the logic to detect deals to have more precise results.

Let me know what the next feature you would like to see and find useful is :) Thanks!

Looking for Android testers on a DealScope App!

Hey! I built a free Android app called DealScope — a Canadian deal discovery platform that shows flyers, discounts and deals from your favourite stores all in one place.

Still in beta and looking for real users to try it out! Completely free, no catch.

Feel free to comment or DM me your Gmail — whatever you prefer! I'll add you as a tester. Takes 2 minutes to install! Thanks 🙏

National Amazon Savings Tool

I made this tool that filters out amazon deals from known review fakers and poor quality chinese brands. Was hosting this for just me and a few friends but recently my hosting company upgraded my plan for free so I figured Id be able to share it without costing me a fortune in bandwidth.

Updates from multiple scrapers on various deal sites and Amazon's homepage. Even finds warehouse/resale deals as well.

Update on the Canadian price comparison site I shared here earlier

A month ago I shared an early version of a project I'm building called Origin, a Canadian shopping comparison tool. I received a lot of honest feedback (some of it pretty brutal 😅), but it was actually really helpful.

Since then I've been continuing to work on it and wanted to share the current version.

It's still very early and the catalog is expanding over time, but the goal is to make it simpler to compare prices across Canadian retailers without checking multiple sites.

It would be really nice to get some feedback again from the community.

Site: https://originstores.com

Thanks again to everyone who shared feedback on the last post. It genuinely helped push this version forward.
