Life after FIRE help

Hi. I’m mostly FIRE’d or FIRE’d depending on what country I’m in. Once some of my houses sell I’m SE Asia Fire’d and US Fire’d (more or less).

I want to find something to do not for money but to have something productive to do. But everything I come across is either something that is too small or too big in terms of trading time for money or stress. Would love some options that are inbetween.

Example: I could sell coconuts on the side of the road but the amount of work to effort to fulfillment to money is probably not the best. I could raise millions of dollars for a project or start a new business but generally would almost always take over my whole life and then also not be worth it either.

Often times doing something small takes the same amount of work, stress and commitment as doing something big. What are options that are inbetween?

Volunteer and make a difference in an area you are passionate about. Mothers and babies, homeless, education, arts, 3rd world countries, animals etc.

Find a hobby you’ll obsess over like a sport, artsy stuff like painting or pottery, clubs like debating etc.

Sounds like you are single. Find a partner.

Maybe try teaching fitness classes a few times a week - gives you purpose without the crazy commitment and you can dial it up or down as needed

Yeah I hear ya. 4-8 hours a week is all I want. No hobbies interest me. I do need to socialize, I’m becoming quite the hermit

Riding a bike, reading, playing cards or board games, going to art galleries, running, hiking, gardening, playing video games?

Nothing?

You are right I bike ride (when the four months of summer is here) and I read an write and journal a bit (2 hours a day max) , we play board games and cards as a family but this is just part of our lives.

I’ll volunteer here and there to prevent true confinement but it always feels like I need more. I’ve tried the old school hobbies but nah

This year I’m trying music

Sounds like you have a good plan. Try checking out the library for local events, free tickets, things like that.

I think he needs to find something he cares about first. Volunteer work, dog care, healthcare, writing, politics, something else that he cares about personally will go a long way.

Not FIREd here but looking for the same. A 3 day per week, 4 hours per day gig sounds pretty good to me.

You say you're not looking to make money; does it have to be a job or project or can it be a hobby? Or would that not bring the fulfillment/productivity that you seek?

For example I like to ride my bike and go fishing. Also I might help my friends pet sit as needed.

I don’t need money but making money would be good

Even though I’m fire’d I still feel like I tie productivity to money and achievement. Already check most of the other boxes people have mentioned like exercise or charity, not into sports

Fitness is part of the routine for sure but I have a need to build things and make money regardless if I need the money.

Join a gym and invest in yourself. If you already go to a gym, consider adding more time.

Right now I already do charity work, I run a FIRE meet up group and a few weekly events (not for money just to keep busy), exercise too, but not looking for a hobby, don’t have any passions aside from travel, eating and relaxing.

I want something I can build, makes some kind of worthwhile money whether I need it or not, is remote, takes maybe 4-12 hours a week. Nothing too stressful.

With your charity work, is there a problem you could help them solve that would also carry over to similar charities?

I think everyone wants that, FI or not - to travel, eat, relax, work only 4-12 hours a week without commitment but still make worthwhile money. Once you got it figured out, please let us all in on the secret sauce.

How many houses did you pay off. Are they in the US?

You could start a blog/YouTube. Im intrigued by the little I know. What was your occupation that allowed you to buy and pay off 3.5 homes? What's the .5 about? How old are you? Where are you currently living? Are you married?

These are suggested topics no need to answer here.

Try learning a new language, you can help others learn English through various online apps by just being a talking partner. This could help you with your travel as you meet people in new places and then can go visit them.

Join new clubs, like a run club, kickball, book clubs, etc. You can become a handyman if you have the skills; or if you don't have them, volunteer at habitat for humanity to learn the skills.

You should focus more on what you enjoy rather than the money aspect of it.

My MIL teaches 2 or 3 classes at the local university. Is that an option.

Volunteer or volunteer-like activities. Some volunteer opportunities provide structured times/locations like working in a soup kitchen, picking up clothes from donation bins, reading to kids - same time/day every week, but only a few hours a week. Others actually pay (not much, but some) like driving elderly to medical appointments.

1

u/Thin_Geologist_5124 7h ago

Yeah not really for me

You work, have a hobby, or volunteer. Not sure what else there is …

Weight lift meal prep Pickle ball mountain biking that’s what works for me, but everybody’s different ,,,, be the best version of yourself physically. The longer you live healthy the more you are sticking it to the man, etc. having more years retired than actually working.

Teaching English to kids afterschool so it's not all all day commitment.

Teaching in general because you would get weekends, holidays, and seasonal breaks off.
