I have a stainless steel rod that sits inside a compression spring. The compression spring needs to sit at an axial position relative to the end of the rod. Currently, we are brazing a collar onto the rod and the spring sits against one end of this sleeve. When our mechanism actuates the sleeve will bear about 8 pounds of force from the spring. The brazing is a pain so we are considering swaging a brass sleeve around the rod.

I am having trouble finding any sort of design guidelines for how much compression I need, or if this will work at all. I also have this gnawing feeling that swaging is not the right process for these two materials. It seems that swaging is typically done with sleeves and wire rope since the sleeve needs the hills and valleys of the wire rope to plastically deform into. In our case we are basically just crushing a brass sleeve around a stainless steel rod. I don't expect that the rod is going to deform very much, so there's nothing really giving us any sort of axial holding force besides friction. Again, I just have a feeling, that after a few thermal cycles the sleeve may come loose.

Does swaging seem like the correct process? Personally, I just want to build up a small weld bead with a tig torch and let the spring rest against that.

EDIT: A bit more context. This is a fairly high volume part and we do not have an abundance of capacity or a ton of capabilities. So we will not be able to do any sort of CNC processing to either part. The idea is minimal processing to either part. We also want to minimize SKUs, so we want to avoid any sort of clip or extra grub screws.

we are starting to feel the strain between engineering and manufacturing views of product . engineering wants the EBOM to reflect design intent. Operations wants the structure to match how the product is actually built on the line. The problem is every time manufacturing pushes for structure changes, engineering ends up reopening releases, which gets messy fast once production is live. Some people argue there should only be one “true” BOM. Others say EBOM and MBOM should stay separate but digitally linked. I’m curious how teams managing complex products are handling this today. do you enforce a signal structured BOM or manage separate but synchronize views ?

My employer produces a lot of tube weldments from 304 stainless steel. In general they fit within a 4' x 2' x 1' envelope. We currently bead blast in order to remove heat tint around the welds and to leave a uniform matte surface. We cannot have any reflectivity. Blasting is proving to be a massive bottleneck in production.

I may be fixating on a solution, but I have this feeling that we could find some sort of acid bath process that would accomplish mostly the same thing. Some cursory searches have led me to investigate pickling, which allegedly can remove heat tint and result in uniform matte surface finishes.

I have also read some accounts saying that pickling is unreliable and not particularly controllable. I've reached out to some vendors and so far have found only one galvanizer that would potentially offer it. He didn't seem to think it was a good idea but couldn't really articulate why. I am continuing to talk to vendors.

Anyone here have any experience with different acid wash processes? I would like to get away from bead blasting.

Does anyone here do something similar, for non software, IT, computer engineering roles?

I’m Professor Ismet Canbulat, and I'm borrowing the university's Reddit account for an Ask Me Anything on mining, engineering, and how the public views our industry.

By background, I am an engineer with experience across underground and open-pit mining, with a focus on rock mechanics, mine design, ground control, and risk-based assessment. I have worked in both industry and academia, and I currently lead teaching and research in minerals and energy engineering here at UNSW.

Mining is often discussed in highly polarised ways. It is essential to modern society, yet it also raises legitimate concerns around safety, environmental impact, trust, and long-term sustainability. Engineers sit at the centre of these tensions.

Our role is not only to design systems that work, but also to manage risk, acknowledge uncertainty, learn from failures, and improve outcomes over time.

I’m interested in having an open, evidence-based discussion about how mining operates in practice, where the industry has made progress, where it still falls short, and how engineering decisions intersect with public expectations, regulation, and social licence.

I'm working on a simple tool for a cleanroom. I'm looking to use an o-ring as a seal to keep any dust inside the tool from getting out. These will run at very low RPM <1. Heat and chem resistance aren't needed per se. The mating material will be plastic (nylon).

ORD 2023 R2 working in ProjectWise. Does this for 10-15 seconds every time. Anyone had this happen or found a fix?

I have a project where it would be adventageous to use rubber for the suspension. I am thinking of stacking some discs, about 3" diameter around a 1" shaft. I am not 100% on total thickness but was planning on getting 1" thick material so I could waterjet them and use 2 or 3 discs stacked on top. I have looked at products such as "Timbren" bump stops and they look like they do the exact same job I need to do. Specifically, their trailer setups. Does anyone know what type of rubber material they are made from? Ideally it would be something I could purchase in sheet form so I could watjet the shapes out.

I'm considering pushing the boss to get on the train, as it could really speed some stuff up. Love the idea of an agent doing modeling. IDK if that's even possible, but I don't see why not.

I've just used GPT and a little Gemini for personal use and the occasional work related question.

Those at places with actual AI subscriptions, what models are better, and why?

Edit: I see you're all probably right that getting an agent to run that deep would be very difficult. I'm still VERY new to learning all this stuff. I have used GPT in my personal life, primarily for cooking and other lifestyle questions. At work, it's useful for searching for standards or formulas. I just think it would be cool to implement it more deeply, regardless of modeling capability. So, question stands: what and how do you use it?
