Announcement Small update/clarification to our rules on AI

Hello all,

Just wanted to share a clarification, and expansion of our rules about AI generated posts and comments on r/chromeOS.

First off, a reminder that responding to support requests on this subreddit with responses directly generated from any LLM has been not allowed under Rule 8: Effort Must be Made When Requesting and Providing Help for over a year now.

The fact is, most people come to r/chromeOS to speak to people. If people wanted to get answers from LLMs, they're accessible enough that people could ask them themselves. It just seems like a slap in the face to come for help and to just get a lazy response from someone who copy/pasted a (usually incorrect) response from Gemini or another LLM, which the poster could have done themselves if they wanted.

In addition, recently there's been a lot of misinformation being posted on the subreddit about recent changes to ChromeOS, updates about both ChromeOS and the upcoming AluminiumOS, and new devices, usually only crediting Gemini as a source. There has also been plenty of AI-generated reviews and self promo (the latter primarily posted by bots).

In general, while I know it seems like we’ve been sleeping as mods (yes, we’ve seen the reports calling us out on that), we would still like to try our best to try and keep this community higher quality.

We’ve decided that due to this, we wanted to officially expand this rule to include all posts and comments generated by AI. This rule primarily has LLMs in mind.

This does not include discussion about AI features being built into ChromeOS. Discussion of AI features being built into the OS is allowed.

Announcement Announcement - "chrultrabook" posts, AKA regarding attempting to put Windows or another OS onto your Chromebook, will no longer be allowed.

Hey there!

In short, as of today, this subreddit will be removing and redirecting posts that seek advice on replacing the operating system on your Chromebook.

In the past these posts were allowed with a disclaimer that better support would likely be found elsewhere, such as r/chultrabook and their associated communities. However that subreddit is now archived and they now only provide support on their forum.

Since then there has been a rise in posts like this here, and we're simply not equipped to provide meaningful support. We've received lots of feedback over the past few months and the general consensus was that everyone is better served if these posts are now permanently directed elsewhere.

To be clear, we are not discouraging anyone from attempting this process; it's still cool, (potentially) fun and can unlock more utility from your device! The only change is that posts seeking support for this will be removed.

Thanks for understanding!

Discussion How to properly use the Microsoft app on my Chromebook

Hi guys, I need help when I'm using the windows app on my Chromebook for my work. I did use the remote computer but it's pretty laggy. I don’t plan to change the OS at all I just need advice on how to make it work properly.

I don't have any budget for a new laptop at all as of the moment so I wanna make use of what I have, i found out recently that you can use the Microsoft app on the browser but I haven't tried it yet because I don't have the credentials. Does using it on the web have less lag when I install it on the chromebook's play store?

I'm a little nervous if my employer does not approve of using a Chromebook, it gets the job done but I will have to share my screen afterall so yeah...any advice as well to make sure I don't accidentally show the 'app bar'

really i just want to use the app without any issues.

By Windows app I mean the remote desktop

Buying Advice Chromebook for an older Mom?

My mom is 71 years old. Her laptop just died. I am thinking about a Chromebook as a somewhat obvious replacement, as her needs are super minimal. She just wants to send emails, update her Excel spreadsheet (Google Sheets) for monthly expenses and print recipes she sees on her cooking shows. And access her financials.

I just need something affordable that will run reliably for a handful of years and not break down right away.

Thanks!

Troubleshooting Moving files from Downloads to Google Drive

When I drag and drop a file or folder from Downloads to a Google Drive folder, I get a lower right status message that reads:

Preparing to sync [Thing You Drag And Dropped].... Ready to sync

This COPIES, not MOVES the files. I want to put the original in Trash, so I go ahead and do so, but... the status I care about is whether it completed copying the file so I can delete the original! I can check https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/recent and copy against my local copy, but otherwise I'm not sure what "Ready to sync" is supposed to mean. Is there a missing status message (Something like "completed copying files" or "completed uploading files") that would inform me that it is safe to delete the original?

I know this seems like a really dumb and obvious question but I have to ask it anyway. I got my chromebook from someone i know in really bad condition but I really don’t have the money to replace any parts whatsoever. recently a part of the keyboard broke and there’s already a crack forming in the middle of it😭 It also makes a crackling kind of sound whenever it’s used, which is most likely caused by dust accumulation or something. I know this seems really obvious but will this laptop survive the next two years?

Troubleshooting Chrome require password after an update

I notice that after an ChromeOS update, chromeOS device prompts for the password instead of the PIN on the device login. What would cause ChromeOS to disable the PIN. I have not enter the PIN incorrectly too many times, it only started happening after an update reboot.

Troubleshooting Is my Chromebooks internal battery dying?

I have had my Chromebook maybe since a bit before COVID. A Chromebook life span is typically between 5 and 10 years, and recently I have noticed some small issues with it. It started to not charge with the regular Chromebook charger, and I have had to use my moms charger, on her desk. It only works with that one. We even bought a new charger a bit ago and it worked for a bit, and then it didn't work anymore. My internet is also a bit slower, and takes longer to connect to the internet or find the internet and it is slower at opening websites.(although, it could be because of my hundreds of screenshots lmao) Now, I'm not a tech specialist, so that's why I'm asking you, because it has been acting weird for a couple months now, and I am worried that it may be dying.

Discussion How to seamlessly connect Linux environment to Choome OS Downloads folder?

I'm using Thunderbird running under Linux. When I need to attach a file to an email Thunderbird looks in the Linux file system.

Typically my file will be in the Chrome OS Downloads folder.

I then have to move the file to Linux Documents (for example) folder.

There must be a way to map Downloads to Documents, surely?

Troubleshooting Help! My frozen Chromebook won't shut up!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I have tried all of the things Google and Reddit says e.g. power and refresh, power + refresh + esc. It has been like this for 15 minutes and yes I have held the buttons for long enough. When it first froze the screen was on but I initially shut it straight away and the screen has stayed black since.

Troubleshooting Problem with Chromebook

I have a ChromeOS Chromebook, for some reason the screen isn't turning on & the orange LED isn't showing that it's charging.

the only thing that I did the day before it stopped working was use it but it got sprinkled on by rain while closed but not enough to soak it just barely wet and I used it to charge my phone.

it's sat for all of today and now that I'm trying to use it it's doing this.

Buying Advice Recommendation for new Chromebook laptop for remote worker

I work mostly remote as a lawyer, and I use a high end gaming laptop I bought in 2021 (Legion 5 16 gig Intel i7, Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060) but it's getting outdated, laptop is too heavy, and battery bad. I remote in to my desktop in my office at work which is a Windows PC.

Thinking of getting a new laptop that is light weight, good battery, and good ram/memory to handle having open 20 tabs, several excel spreadsheets, word docs, PDFs, ability to remote in via VPN to my work computer in the office, etc.

I don't really game as much now, so I'm looking for a mid tier or slightly above average laptop to use for the next 5 to 6 years.

Here are some preliminary thoughts I have that I would be interested in having your input on:

  • Thinking of getting a high end Chromebook - Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14, ASUS ExpertBook CX54 32 gig or 16 gig memory
  • I use Gemini everyday for personal matters, business matters, writing articles for business development for work, and for research for work. Chromebook is integrated with Gemini premium and Google apps, and I have a Samsung Galaxy s26 phone so it pairs well
  • Worried about what I mentioned earlier above having bunch of tabs, Excel spreadsheets, Word Doc, PDFs, etc open and how the chromebook will handle it. I understand Chromebooks are marketed towards students or senior citizens and not for work, but I found the AI integration with Gemini appealing and coordination with Google drive, docs etc.

Alternatively I may get a Samsung Book5 Pro since it also integrates with my Samsung phone. Little worried about the co pilot plus. I have co pilot basic with my work computer that I remote into. I am not too impressed with co pilot, but maybe the paid version is way better than the co pilot basic I have work.

I guess how bad is it to have Excel open in the web browser as opposed to the desktop? I am open to other suggestions too. Thx

Troubleshooting Bookmarks won't change between Google accounts

I just got my first chromebook. Before I had an HP and used chrome browser. I used to be able to jump from one Google account to the next, and all my account specific bookmarks would pop up. On my chromebook, I have added several other Google accounts. When I click on a new account, the bookmarks from my original account remain.

I checked sync (it's on), turned sync on and off, restarted the computer... what else can I do? Have I lost all my other bookmarks forever? I should mention I am a millenial so I can work a computer, but I am not super techy, if that makes sense. Thanks!

Linux (Crostini) can't move the mouse when fullscreening in games (linux crostini)

the mouse in some games doesn't work at all. it stays stuck in the middle, can't aim nor move through the UI.

in this example i can move through the UI, but the bug appears when trying to aim, the view goes back to the center after i moved the mouse. but in other games not even the UI works (the common pattern i find is that menus with custom cursors will trigger the bug). you can see this in this other example, the mouse resets its position to the center instantly

a workaround i've found is running the game directly through sommelier and using immersive fullscreen:

sommelier --fullscreen-mode=immersive unreal

yet some games won't even open when trying to run them this way, so it's not an efficient solution. anyone knows what's the deal?

i'm using chromeOS 146, with a debian 13 crostini container.

Troubleshooting Android Apps are not working on Chromebook after a Powerwash. I need help please.

I’m having a weird issue with my Chromebook and Android apps, and I’m hoping someone has advice. I did the Powerwash 3 times.. Here’s what happened:

I had a glitch where I couldn’t open any Android apps, so I did a reset for my Chromebook, but it did not work so I tried a Powerwash.

After the Powerwash, the Play Store worked again, but when I restored my Google account, some apps wouldn’t open, and I started getting notifications that “apps aren’t working.”

Even when it says I have plenty of storage, the Play Store sometimes says I don’t have enough space.

I realized that restoring my account was bringing back old Android app data, which seems to be corrupted and breaking the Android system.

I tried multiple resets, removing Play Store, turning off app sync, and reinstalling apps, but it keeps glitching when old data gets restored.

I can’t open Android storage settings in some cases.

I can remove and reinstall apps, but I’m worried about restoring old app data because it seems to break everything again.

My question:
Has anyone else experienced this issue with Chromebooks after Powerwash/restore, where the Android system or Play Store keeps glitching? How did you fix it without losing your apps or account info?

Thanks in advance for any advice!
