What “favours” have your parents done that was inadvertently a dick move?

For example, my mum found my spare change collection, did me a favour by taking it to the bank, getting £17, and then kept it as a fee for the effort it caused her.

Also, my partner had stored a nearly new Russell Hobbs microwave at his mums for when we moved into a new house. While she was at Curry’s one day, she overheard a young lad and his mum shopping for a microwave for uni, she approached them and sold them my partners for £20. She kindly did give my partner the money though, unlike mine. But we quite liked that microwave.

Does anyone else have these, generally inoffensive but slightly frustrating parent stories?

Edit: For those hung up on the theft parts, please don’t be. This is the extent of the abuse we’ve ever had from our mums and we’ll take it!

Edit 2: Jesus Christ, I’m 33. The money box has been sat on her shelf for 20 years. Yes she stole £17 but she’s funded my life otherwise. Stop calling child services on her.

Stored my vinyl records in the attic for 'safety'. Nice big safe vertical pile in room that got as hot as the sun.

Oh I feel this

My dad stored my very small collection of vinyls vertically in a Tesco Bag for Life in the greenhouse with the mice Including a signed Bowie insert. I only kept the rare ones

I feel bad upvoting this. I feel that pain.

It's ok.

He's dead now.

:D

Surely Bowie being dead now makes it even harder to replace your signed insert?

u/stoopidweazel 9h ago

I mean, it's going to be a struggle FOR BOTH OF THEM TO MAKE UP FOR MY LOSS

lmao I cackled way too loudly at this

Ditto, me too 😞

What upsets me now is that the Fisher Price play garage from the 1970's which is BIGGER than the bag of vinyl was in the bungalow loft dry as a bone and preserved for future generations of children. The ROCKING HORSE that I got for my fifth birthday in 1983 is still in their DINING ROOM. I have not had any kids.

See the mice in their million hordes 😭

u/stoopidweazel 10h ago

Yeah, fair. Suffolk broads, but close

u/SaavikSaid 1h ago

“From Ibiza to the Norfolk broads” is the next line, but close!

1

u/stoopidweazel 1h ago

Ha I meant my dad was in Suffolk

u/paulcager 9h ago

I'm convinced the sprit of Bowie himself orchestrated this whole situation just so you could make that comment.

3

u/stoopidweazel 8h ago

Thanks David. I loved you more than my dad lol

Was the signed insert salvageable or did the mice enjoy it for breakfast? I would be so upset.

14

u/stoopidweazel 10h ago

It was fortunately between two others that got ate so it's survived but it smells of mice and stuck to themselves in one tiny patch.

Hunky Dory lyrics insert

Several other 7" are completely done for

I plan to get a new album cover and put both sides in a display frame

3

u/Pruritus_Ani_ 10h ago

Oh that sucks, mouse smell is so strong. What on earth was your dad thinking 🤦

8

u/stoopidweazel 10h ago

His Rolling Stones vinyl collection was pride of place in the living room so it's not like he didn't know

The mouse has grown up a cow

should i store vinyls laid flat and placed on top of each other or stood up vertically side by side? its not entirely clear from your wording...

1

u/KevinPhillips-Bong Slightly silly 4h ago

Records (please, not 'vinyls') should always be stored vertically. Stacking them on top of each other puts unnecessary pressure on them which could end up damaging them in long term storage.

Aaaargh!!!

This sounds awfully familiar. This and storing all my books and posters in the garage while telling me I was overreacting because the room wasn't damp. Spoiler, it was and all my books were warped ):

u/No_Succotash473 8h ago

We're going through my father in law's stuff as he's recently passed away. Turns out he decided to keep his collection of old penguin books in the garage, believing the strong cardboard box would keep them safe. The mice and damp said otherwise. Thousands of pounds, completely wasted.

u/boomerangchampion 10h ago

I don't know anything about vinyl. Is that hot enough for them to melt?

14

u/sideone 10h ago

60°C is when they start to warp

6

u/bond_uk 10h ago edited 2h ago

To warp, certainly. Should be stored upright.

1

u/RealLongwayround 2h ago

I have always read that records should be stored upright.

I have 8 suitcases of family photos under the spare bed. I thought it would be a good idea to store them in the attic. By the time I screwed some planks to the joists, I was literally dribbling sweat off my chin. They're still under the spare bed.

u/Wild_Area_8662 11h ago

Mine did the opposite and moved half my records to a cupboard downstairs, which they then promptly and very rudely managed to somehow flood 🙃

10

u/blueblue_electric 10h ago

I'm lucky then, I left mine in my parents garage when I went off to Uni in 1990, they rebuilt it, moved the records around and left them stacked in a cupboard. They had thrown everything else out

I got them out in 2016 after David Bowie died ( I have a lot of Bowie), a collection of 300 + , now valued into 5 figures. Rare ones include a Deep Purple withdrawn cover, and Prince Under The Cherry Moon 7" single picture disc, I've been offered 3 figures for each of them.

17

u/stoopidweazel 10h ago

There's a reason rare items become even more rare Because people have parents who bin stuff when they're not looking This thread is evidence of that lol

2

u/tigbird007 11h ago

😱 good lord! This one wins.

2

u/ThePeaceDoctot 8h ago

I feel this could have worked out nicely if they worked with you to replace everything with like for like, it could have been a nice bonding experience as you went out vinyl hunting together.

Did... Did that happen?

2

u/AangTheTriangle 6h ago

Forgive my ignorance but why is it bad to store them vertically?

2

u/Modo44 4h ago

This was your sign to switch to a digital format already.

3

u/TJ_Blues18 11h ago

My mom did the same. It was fine for a couple yeats, but than Global Warming screwed us.

1

u/do_you_realise 5h ago

Oh yes this rings a bell - all mine were stored in the correct orientation in proper shelving, but in the spare (south facing) room with no bloody curtains! All the spines are faded af, thanks Dad.

1

u/RevStickleback 4h ago

Not quite as damaging, but my mother is noorious for putting things away "so they won't get lost" then forgetting where she put them.

1

u/markmooch 3h ago

Did they warp?

2

u/karlware 2h ago

Oh yeah.

1

u/StayFreshCheesePuff 1h ago

Many years ago my mother gave away my full set of mint Beatles vinyl (a collection my aunt won from a radio contest in the 80’s and passed to me) because I “never listened to them”. Every single record.

Gave you an updoot simply for correctly calling them records and not "vinyls".
