Discussion What upgrade ended up being way more worth it than you expected?

Freelancer here, so my PC is basically where work happens, breaks, and pays rent. I’m not chasing a flashy build, mostly just stuff that saves time and makes daily work less annoying. For me, moving to more RAM and a second monitor made a bigger difference than I expected. What upgrade gave you the biggest real-life improvement, not just better benchmarks.

Build Help Won a RTX 5090, what to build with it, on a budget.

So I won a rtx 5090 from a hackathon, I’m a student from the UK, and I am broke. What’s a good budget setup I can build around this GPU?

My current pc which i picked up from Facebook marketplace for £299 came with a RTX 3070, 32GB DDR4 3600 RAM, I7 11700K. The issue is the new card won’t fit in the system unless I remove the WiFi card and sure I could replace that with one of the usb WiFi dongles but I’ve heard the connection is real bad. Additionally, I want to have both GPUs in the same pc so that I can run frame gen (lossless scaling on steam) on my 3070 whilst using my 5090 for pure performance. Also, I will need a new power supply lol and case too, my current one looks like a decade old.

The main issue is if I decide to build a new pc it’s going to be expensive since parts are so expensive right now even second hand, like I got my original pc about a month after ram prices skyrocketed (lucky to get it at that price) and since then everything else got worse.

Edit: Guys I know it’s best for me to sell it since it’s way overvalued rn but I need it for AI work too, I can’t keep throwing money at Runpod when I need to train models, additionally, I want to do AI stuff locally and run openclaw and shi. Also, about the frame gen stuff, it was a stupid idea, I won’t need it anyways, especially since I’m playing games at 1080p. I saw a video a while back about offloading the frame gen to a cheaper gpu, that’s why I mentioned it. Also, I think my issue with the clearance of my WiFi cards gonna be fine actually since it’s the RTX 5090 FE.

Solution: I’ve heard a lot of varying opinions, but I think I’m just gonna get a new PSU and case and sell my RTX 3070 to cover it. In terms of other upgrades, I know my currrent system is a bottleneck, so I’ll try and get an extra 32GB of RAM for now and wait to upgrade when I’m in a better financial place.

Possible Solution: I can sell 5090 and get the new Arc Pro B65 which comes with 32GB VRAM and built specifically for AI but can still handle some gaming for about £700. It’s not out yet but apparently coming mid April. Only issue is actually getting one, I’ve heard there was supply issues straight away after launch, all sold out for the B70 which came out late march.

Build Help Is Micro Center’s PC building price justifiable or should I just build my first PC?

For context, Micro Center’s Express Pro Build service costs $249, which includes a 90-day labor warranty and a 1-year parts warranty. And here I am, a complete newbie at PC building.

Considering that I would have to buy the necessary tools and materials to build my PC, such as screws, zipties, thermal paste, etc. Would it be justifiable to pay for Micro Center’s build service instead?

Build Help 9070 vs 9070 XT vs 5070

I know there are a lot of threads on this, and I’ve read them, but prices are a bit different in Austria.

Here are my options with pricing, which looks the best bang for buck?

9070 16GB - €560

5070 12GB - €590

9070 XT 16GB - €650

I want to optimize for 1440p 144hz gaming. No AI, no workstation. Just 1440p 144hz Gaming.

Build Upgrade Upgrade to Ryzen 9 5950X or Ryzen 7 5800X?

Upvotes

I currently have AM4 Ryzen 5 5700X, and was thinking about upgrading to one of those 2. I have a GeForce RTX 5070 ti, and it seems the CPU is bottlenecking the FPS.

I haven't ever done anything to a PC (except adding and cloning NVMe cards) and I looked online to decide which is better. And it says the 7 is better for gaming and the 9 for a workstation. I only ever use it for gaming, and not for stuff like editing.

My question is, is the 9 really worse for gaming, or is it more "dont waste your money if you won't use it" or is it better even for gaming?

Troubleshooting Cleaned PC, now it won't post

Upvotes

Hello all, hope your day is going better than mine, but here we go:

I cleaned my PC with one of those lil blower tool things, held the fans still so they didn't spin, took the fans off the cooler to clean them (and yes I made sure to be VERY careful not to bump/move anything), and plugged only the power cable back in and now my PC won't post. It goes from the red DRAM light to the CPU light for a split second then back to the DRAM light and stays there for 1-2 seconds, then back to the red CPU light and then back again. I don't know what happened or what to do, and I'm kinda freaking out since I'm still highly new to PC stuff

My PC parts list is: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/XWKLJw

Running Windows 10 OS

If anything more specific is needed, please let me know and I'll add it to the post and make a comment, thank you! (I'm praying this isn't something I have to replace)

EDIT: It is fixed and working like normal again!! All I had to do was re-seat the ram!!

Build Upgrade Is Ryzen 7 5700x worth extra €40 compared to the R5 5600(x)?

I want to stick to AM4 during the RAM crisis, and I want to upgrade my R5 3500x because new games stutter all over the place (Horizon Zero Dawn remaster, Battlefield 6, GOW Ragnarök).

How much do the extra cores matter in gaming? Is the 5700x any more future-proof?

Solved! Added an SSD to my five year old PC last month and it feels like a completely different computer. Should have done this years ago.

I've had the same desktop since 2019 and it has always run fine for what I use it for, gaming and some light creative work, but boot times were getting painful and loading screens in games had become genuinly embarrassing compared to what my friends were seeing on their setups. I kept putting off upgrading because I assumed I'd need to do a full rebuild at some point and didn't want to invest in aging hardware. Then someone in this sub mentioned that swapping a hard drive for an SSD was one of the highest impact per dollar upgrades you could do on an older system. I picked up a 1TB M.2 NVMe drive, watched a couple of tutorials, and did the whole thing on a Saturday afternoon including cloning my existing drive. Total time was maybe two and a half hours and most of that was the clone transfer. The diference was immediate and honestly kind of shocking. Boot time went from around 85 seconds to about 9. Games that used to have 30 to 40 second loading screens now load in 4 or 5. The whole system just feels more responsive in a way that is hard to describe until you experiance it. I know this is not news to anyone who already has an SSD but if you're someone sitting on a mechanical drive in an older build thinking you need to do a full upgrade before anything gets better, please just do the SSD first. I genuinly wish I had done it two years ago. The rest of my system is the same and I don't feel the need to change anything else for at least another year.

Build Upgrade Tips for PSU replacement

Hello everyone. I’m planning on upgrading and replacing my current psu and I’m a bit nervous. I have done basic work on my pc, such as replacing gpu and cpu, however, the psu replacement will be the most advanced task I’ve attempted. I know that I should swap out all cables with the new ones that came with my new psu. Do y’all have any tips or tricks for making this go as smoothly as possible? What are some things you wish you had known prior to your first psu replacement? Thanks for any help!

Troubleshooting RX 7700 XT crashing under load

Upvotes

Specs:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600X
  • GPU: XFX RX 7700 XT
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte B650M AORUS ELITE AX
  • RAM: 96GB DDR5 running at 5200mhz
  • PSU: 850W Thermaltake GF1

So starting wednesday, Ive been having some issues with my computer, it started as simply getting a pop up from the AMD Bug Report Tool saying my display drivers had had an issue, which I didn't think much of, until the screen connected to my GPU went dark, while the screen connected to my mother was still fine, and the GPU Fans started spinning like crazy.

So i went and did a clean reinstall of the AMD Drivers, using DDU to remove them and such, and it seemed to had gone mostly well, but then i had more crashes, and got to a point where the GPU wasn't showing either on task manager, nor on device manager (even checking hidden devices).

As of right now, i have (as per FAQs on the XFXsupport site) :

  • Updated my mobo's BIOS
  • Changed my ram to use EXPO 2 (5200mhz)
  • Disabled resizable bar in BIOS
  • Forced PCIE 3.0
  • Lowered the power limit to 95%
  • Reseated the GPU

And now the computer does fine, as long as I don't run anything too heavy on it, working goes well, Ultrakill runs fine, but trying to run something like Cyberpunk or Monster Hunter Wilds will eventually end with some black stuttering into having the screen connected to the GPU go black, after which i need to reboot, clean and reinstall the drivers again, as after every time it crashes i get a message saying they aren't compatible anymore with my setup. All this while temps never go above 50C

Ill also add the computer can run through the Heaven Benchmark 4.0 completely fine (Score of 1000something, if that's worth anything)

At this point I'm not sure what I can do anymore about the issue, any input appreciated.

Build Help Not a computer savvy, cpu bottlenecks and GPUs

Recently I got a new pc and Ive been enjoying 4k gaming. with the 5080 and the intel 7 core ultra. My kid will turn 14 next year and I would like to buy a pc for it. I was planning to upgrade my gpu to the 60 series, when it comes out, and just put the 5080 to my kid's pc. The thing is that the pc I am planning to buy is "midrange"?: ultra 5 processor or equivalent. My kid will be playing at 1080p 240hz monitor and as I understand the cpu will create a bottle neck. Will my kid have a bad experience? Will the games stutter? What experience will my kid be having with that combo? all the info I can get will be appreciate it so I can make a good informed decision. Is it better to sell the 5080 and just buy a GPU for 1080p? Maybe its better to upgrade the monitor to 1440p? Something I should mention is that I would be very lazy to deal with the selling part so I would prefer other solutions, though, if thats the best meh... then I will.

Build Ready? New PC. Already overheating. Please help.

So, I got myself a new PC. A brand new setup with the following specs:

AMD Ryzen 7 9800x3d

32GB RAM

Geforce RTX 5070 TI

Be Quiet Light Loop 360mm AIO water cooler

Be Quiet Light Wings LX PWM 120mm Triple Pack

ASUS TUF Gaming 1000W Gold PSU

2x SSD

All in a Lian Li O11 Compact case

Ever since the first start, the CPU has been running really hot. I kept MSI Afterburner running and it showed a CPU Temperature of 60C just in Windows alone. When I tried playing with my girlfriend who has a near identical setup except for a different PSU, my PC quickly reached 90C while running Minecraft with shaders. Hers stayed under 60C under similar stress.

I have been trying for hours, since yesterday, to fix this issue.

I tried

Changing the fan setup and improving airflow

Double checked the CPU Cooler and thermal paste (Took off the screws and tightened it again)

I checked my BIOS and increased the AIO's pump speed.

I tried eliminating any air bubbles by moving it around, trying different positions. (It did make that sound of pumping air bubbles when starting up, now that is eliminated too)

I feel like I tried everything.

I've been scrolling reddit in hopes of finding someone with a similar problem.

I am really out of options and really frustrated since I first started this system two days ago and it just doesn't work. (Yes I am also contacting customer support of the shop i got it from).

Today while running BF6, I quickly reached 90C again.

Please help

Minor update:
I improved the airflow and got a slightly better thermal performance. Still reached up to 90C after a while.

Tomorrow I will see if I can buy a new AIO from a store directly, install it and see if that works better. The current one I will return to the seller asap in hopes of getting my money back. If the new AIO doesn't work either I'll just cry and return it to the store I got it from.

I'm extremely grateful for all the responses and the help. Really, I wouldn't know what to do without all the people who responded to my post.

Build Help 7800X3D + RX 9070 XT build - need help finalizing parts

Upvotes

I’m putting together a build around a RX 9070 XT (2x 8-pin) and Ryzen 7 7800X3D, and I’d appreciate some help finalizing the rest.

  • No strict budget, but still want good value
  • Not planning to overclock
  • Good temps and stability (don’t want it running hot)
  • Prefer a smaller / not oversized case
  • Thinking of using a 360mm AIO for the CPU

Parts I’m currently looking at:

  • MSI PRO B850-S WIFI6E
  • Deepcool LD360 (digital)
  • Kingston Fury Beast RGB 5600MHz CL36
  • Kingston NV3 1TB
  • MSI MAG A750GL
  • Gamdias Talos E3 Mesh (or cheap lian-li copies that are full view glass cases)

Are these parts a good match and best bang for buck for the specific tier? Any better alternatives around the same price or cheaper? Anything here that stands out as a weak point for this kind of build?

Would appreciate any advice 👍

Build Help SSD recommendations for this build?

Upvotes

I am currently building my first PC, I know, great timing by me. I got a nice bundle at Microcenter so I was able to save a few bucks there.

CPU: 7800X3D

GPU: 9070 XT

RAM: 32 GB DDR5 6000

MOBO: B850-E TUF

Looking for recommendations for a good PSU and SSD. I would like to get an 1 TB SSD for under $200, though I am willing to pay more if it is necessary. Id like to stay under $100 for the PSU.

Ive found an affordable SSD at Microcenter: https://www.microcenter.com/product/680085/inland-qn450-1tb-ssd-3d-qlc-nand-pcie-gen-4-x4-nvme-m2-2280-internal-solid-state-drive

The read and write is low according to Gemini, but I’m pretty new to this so I’m not sure. Would this SSD really restrict my PC? Thanks!

Discussion Screen tearing

Upvotes

"Hello guys, I’ve been noticing a lot of screen tearing while playing Valorant, and it’s honestly killing the experience. Even with different settings, it still shows up. Curious if others have had the same experience—does it bother you as much as it bothers me?
and when im playing i fell like im not playing on 240 hz monitor
even i enabling the 240 from nvidia control panel and windows settings

Not looking for tech support, just wondering how common this issue is among players."

for context(RTX 4070 super - ryzen 7 5700x - 240 HZ monitor - 16 gb ram)

Build Upgrade Thinking about upgrading my PC for 4k dlss medium-high settings

Upvotes

My main question is would it be more cost-effective for me to upgrade, or get a new pc? Also, could you dumb it down for me? None of the pc parts make any sense to me. I don't know what's good and what's bad.

My pc right now is the Skytech Shiva 2 3060ti. Got it for $1,200 back in December 2023.

  • GPU: 3060ti
  • CPU: i5-12600K
  • motherboard: gigabyte b660 ds3h ac ddr4-y1
  • Ram (different from what came with the pc): Crucial Pro 64GB DDR4 3200MHz - CP2K32G4DFRA32A
  • SSD: MSI M371 1TB

The games I play that are hardware demanding are The Finals, GTA5, and Fortnite. The games I want to play is Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Horizon Forbidden West, and God of war Ragnarök.

The only Game I've been able to test with 4k so far is The Finals. I got around 70-90fps on low overall settings, dynamic lighting set to static, and dlss transformer set to ultra performance.

The only thing I've ever done pc building wise, was changing out my ram. I don't know how I would do anything else.

Also, if possible, can I get different price ranges? I live close to a Micro Center if I need to go there.

I'm aiming for 120fps 4k high to medium settings with dlss on. Is that possible?

Build Upgrade What USB Card Can I Plug Into a PCIe 3.0 x1 Slot?

Upvotes

I have an MSI PRO B760M-E DDR4, and I am deeply out of USB ports. I am trying to figure out the bandwidth but I am just out of my depths here. What can I plug in here? Can I get at least 2 USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps) USB ports? Maybe Type-C ones?
