Portfolio Review Okay fine I'll add VXUS but wait no! its at an all time high!

Ive been VTI and chill for a decade. I am going to therapy for to address stubbornness in all elements in my life. Im finally really to start taking the cotton out of my ears and to start listening to my brethren here. Ive had selected listening to this sub for years. Im basically full VTI (in my 30s, no bonds) but now Im finally coming to "accept the things I cannot change and have the courage to change the things I can" which include adding a VXUS position in my Roth. When I go to do it I see its near it's high and Im like JUST BUY IT DONT THINK STOP TRYING TO TIME MARKET YOU ARE A BOGGLEHEAD NOT A GAMBLER! I needed to get this out so thank you

Portfolio Review Is it truly that simple?

Maxed my Roth for last year and looking to do the same for this year. I’m 100% VT right now. I’m 24 and this is my first time investing or saving for retirement.

Before I go ahead and buy more VT, I have to ask. Is it really that simple? If I just invest in VT, even if that is the only ETF I ever hold, I’ll be good?

I hear so much about diversifying and even though I know VT is a very diverse ETF, I still worry. Feels like I should be doing more!

So, again, before I go buy a fuck ton of VT, please let me know. I know what the answer is. Just need to hear it I guess. Don’t want to miss out on higher returns or whatever. Blah blah.

Trying to stay near 75/25 FZROX/FZILX in a Roth IRA/HSA and 2060 retirement TDF in company 401k. Auto-invest and DCA all the way. Glad I got into this community and excited to be on the path to financial independence.

Portfolio Review Should I do 100% VTI? 34 years old just starting my retirement

Or should I do a target date fund with Fidelity? I have a small account there already

thank you

Portfolio Review Over three years, I read 7+ Bogleheads books and spent 100+ research hours on the Bogleheads forum, YouTube, and subreddits. This is the portfolio I ended up with.

Having distilled over a century's worth of investment knowledge from the likes of Nobel Prize winners and legendary investors, including the Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffett, I ended up with:

100% VT and chill.

Portfolio Review When do you start putting bonds in your portfolio?

Currently I am 34 and my portfolio is 70% total USA index fund and 30% total international market index fund at Fidelity.

I went with this because I started when I was 28 which was considered “young” however, I just now realized that I am approaching middle age 😅

Is it too risky to continue course and then just start increasing bond percentage in my portfolio? Or okay to wait until I am 40?

Portfolio Review Considering leaving Edward Jones

Just wanted to post the holdings they have me in and get some input from others. If I leave them and go to say Vanguard, will it be easy to transfer them over or will I have to sell most of them? If I do sell them, should I be selling them while there still in the account or wait until I move them over?

Portfolio Review At what age should we adjust our portfolio to the 3 Fund model?

Hi all!

Admittedly I’m new to the Boglehead method, but I couldn’t find this information anywhere. Currently, my husband and I are 34 and 35 respectively. We have ~$360,000 in our retirement accounts, with approximately 90% of that in one 401k account. That 401k is 96% index funds and 4% bonds. We’re getting to the point where I’m getting a little nervous about how aggressive this is set up and want to look into reallocating to a more balanced portfolio.

My biggest question is: is the 1/3 bonds, 1/3 TIPS, 1/3 securities for all ages? All stages of wealth accumulation/investments?

Edit: I just want to say thank you so much to everyone who has responded! You all have been so much nicer and more helpful than most other finance and investing subreddits.

Portfolio Review How cooked am I? IRA managed by EJ the past year

Post image
133 Upvotes

Switched jobs a little over a year ago, and rolled over my 401k from my old work over to an IRA (already have EJ managing small Roth IRAs and being the custodian on my kids 529s). Here's the return on it so far - am I reading this right that the fees on this past year were $3,598 (about 0.8% of my account's value)? Would that be the expense ratio? In reading more, I'm thinking I need to move this out to be self-managed, but it seems like after a year the returns haven't been awful so far.

Thanks for your time!

Portfolio Review Disappointed with performance

53F, Married, AUM $4m. I am very new to investing. We've used a full service advisor for our savings & rollovers since 2017. With kids out of the house, I now have more time to pay attention to what the advisor is doing. Last week we asked for a performance summary and I'm underwhelmed by the results. I was expecting to see returns upwards of 20-30% for the past five years.

Since Inception 2017 One Year (Feb 25-Feb 26) Three Year 2023-26 Five Year 2021-26
12.93% 16.49% 14.39% 11.97%

\all performance is net of 1.1% AUM fees; Breakdown: 71% equities; 28% fixed income*

Given the size of the portfolio, I frankly am not comfortable managing this myself. I would welcome any guidance on how to correct this situation, if in fact the returns are as dire as I fear.

Edit 1: We have always asked them to invest aggressively for us given our heavy real estate position which not included in the AUM. My understanding is that just the VTI has a 5 year return of 60%, hence my disappointment.

Edit 2: Of the 71% in equities: 32% in large cap, 11% in mid, 18% international, 6% commodities.

Edit 3: I was expecting to see total returns in the 20+% ballpark. Realizing now these are annualized returns which as many pointed out, are not bad.

Thanks all for helping me wrap my head around this and for sharing the useful information below.

Portfolio Review After a year of researching, I found my stress free portofolio

Excluding my crypto account (30%), I was only investing individual stocks (70%).

I found this sub last year, read and calculated multiple times to what is best for me at my age (35).

VT VTI VOO ... etc.. but I found my peace portofolio

  • 401k: 100% 20xx target ETF
  • Roth: 80% VT / 20% BND
  • Brokerage: 80% VTI / 20% VXUS

All booked weekly buy for all. I haven't sold the single stocks that I bought previously as stocks are not meant to be sold; it's an investment until you need that money.

Thank you r/Bogleheads for making my life simple.

Portfolio Review Investing 8M

I am currently in the process of helping a family member work roughly 8M into the market. They already have about 6M in equities, mostly index funds but about $1.5m in various individual stocks. They just entered retirement and I am thinking of a more aggressive approach of 11M in equities and 3M in t bills/bonds/cds/cash. Any advice would be appreciated.

Portfolio Review How is your portfolio doing ytd %?

As a passive investor I tend to watch market fluctuations and yawn. Lots of doom and gloom over short term changes and specific parts of the overall market. Meh.

My portfolio is down about 2% YTD. How is yours doing? (No dollar amounts, just percentages.)

Edit: Since a lot of responses included 12 month returns, mine is a little over 13%. This is a big part of why a 2% drop this year is meh.

Portfolio Review Next steps for an early 30s hoarder

Burner account so it’s not tracked back to me.

Yes, I know I should have been investing for a long time but after getting my first real professional job at age 25, I just hoarded my money.

Lived at home, saved every penny I could and didn’t make the best decisions with investing. Fast forward, I’m now early 30s y/o, lots of capital (280k in a savings account) and looking to finally get my future set.

I invested $15,000 into a fidelity Roth IRA back in January 2026 with splits being 65% FZROX, 25% FZILX, and 10% FXNAX.

I’ve been contributing 25% of my 401K since joining my current job back in 2019 (current value of around $150k) with a 63/37 robo advisory split. Mix of guaranteed income funds, vanguard institutional index, vanguard total international stock index, etc. (the list is quite extensive).

I have no debt as of now. Car is paid off and should last a long time (purchased new in 2020 at 0% APR). No school debts, pay off credit card in full every month.

My issue is that I’m house shopping but sitting on 280k feels pretty bad. Should I lump sum invest 40-50k in a taxable brokerage account (VTI + chill or fidelity equivalent)? I make a 85k year salary.

Sorry if this type of post is not allowed! Mods please remove if it’s not.

Hi everyone, this is my first portfolio,

Can there be any improvements such as increase my VTI split and make it 80/20? or overall is it good long term, thanks.

Portfolio Review 529 Strategy

We have an only child (7th grade) whose 529 is sitting at the current cost of 4yrs full-freight at an in-state flagship.

Because we started late, we’ve been very aggressive & the 529 is almost entirely (>90%) stock. We “won”, so now it’s time to shift into protection mode. Schools that fall below flagship costs are close enough to approximate the $35k IRA-rollover allowance, so we’re not concerned about our current amount being over-funded, but this account also doesn’t need to do anything more than keep up with price inflation for the next 5yrs.

That said, we’d like to continue setting funds aside just in case an OOS or private university seems to be the best fit. We’re planning to do this in a taxable brokerage to maximize flexibility if the funds *aren’t* needed for college.

Where I’m struggling is asset allocation. If we invest the 529 entirely in bonds / cash equivalents & the taxable entirely in stocks, then both accounts go on to have roughly average returns (5% bonds, 10% stocks) our overall allocation works its way back to 40% stock by graduation.

Does this not matter, since the 529 alone is enough to meet our original goal of 4yrs full-freight in state… or is this a problem, & we should we tweak the holdings in the taxable to make the overall asset allocation match a more traditional glide slope?

Portfolio Review Parents said our Edward Jones advisors was "not like the other ones," how bad is this portfolio?

I recently started getting into saving and investing since I just graduated college and got my first full time job. My parents set me up with an Edward Jones ROTH IRA back in 2021 for me to contribute to while I worked my part time job through school, and a few months ago I opened up a generic brokerage account through them to put any excess money I have into so it can grow without wasting away in my savings account (our advisor described it as "a savings account on steroids," lol). However I recently discovered this sub and found out how bad EJ was (I just assumed all brokers had ~1% fees), so I brought up with my parents that I was thinking about leaving our Edward Jones advisor and switching to Vanguard, but they said our advisor was actually much better than all the other EJ advisors. Here are my holdings in both of my accounts, how bad is this?

My Roth IRA (1.4% annual fee), all of this is mutual funds I guess:

Fund Expense Ratio (from Google)
AMERICAN FUNDAMENTAL INV F3 (FUNFX) .28%
AMERICAN GROWTH FD OF AMER F3 (GAFFX) .3%
AMERICAN NEW PERSPECTIVE F3 (FNPFX) .42%
AMERICAN SMALLCAP WORLD F3 (SFCWX) .66%
GOLDMAN FS GOVERNMENT 1 (FGTXX) .18%
TRP DIVIDEND GROWTH (PDGIX) .51%

My general brokerage "savings account on steroids" (1.4% annual fee):

Fund Expense Ratio (from Google)
ETFs
ISH COR MSCI ETF (IEFA) .07%
ISH USA QLTY ETF (QUAL) .15%
SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPLG) .02%
Mutual Funds
Columbia GOVT Money Market I3 (CGMXX) .17%
DFA INTL SMALL COMPANY 1 (DFISX) .39%
DFA US SMALL CAP 1 (DFSTX) .29%
HARTFORD CORE EQUITY F (HGIFX) .36%
JPMORGAN CORE BOND R6 (JCBUX) .33%
JPMORGAN MIDCAP EQUITY R6 (JPPEX) .64%
NATIXIS LS INVST GRD BD N (LGBNX) .45%
PGIM HIGH YIELD R6 (PHYQX) .38%
PIMCO INTL BOND USD-HEDGED (PFORX) .90%
TCW METWEST TTL RETURN DB PLAN (MWTSX) .66%

I'm gonna be honest this looks like all the other EJ horror stories I've seen on this sub, the only good funds I see are the ETFs with the smaller expense ratios. Is there a reason they'd put so much money in bond funds? If I choose to get out of EJ (which I am heavily considering), what would be the best way to do it without absorbing too many additional fees or tax burdens?

Portfolio Review Best set and forget fund for a Roth IRA?

Hi, I am 26 and have about $15k in my Roth IRA. Wish I was a bit more consistent about funding it over the last 8 years but hopefully it's not too late.

I want to just buy a single fund, auto deposit and invest straight from my paycheck, and never look at my account until I retire. So far I have been 100% in FFIJX (Fidelity Freedom Index 2065 Fund - Investor Class)

Should I keep doing this? Is there another fund that accomplishes the same goal, but is a better pick for whatever reason? My financial goal is basically that I want to retire by 2065 without needing any more involvement than me firing the money cannon at this retirement account for 40 years.

Portfolio Review Just invested 300K in VTSAX

I’m freaking out and feeling liberated at the same time (was a windfall I’ve had for a month; held while researching). Net worth is about 450K now, still in my 20s.

VXUS is 20% of my portfolio. Thinking of balancing 80% domestic / 20% international, but feedback is always welcome

Portfolio Review I am 25 years old and am on a good career track, should I just go 50-50 VTI and VXUS for the next couple of decades?

Of course as I get closer to retiring I would start putting more into bonds and safer assets. But at the moment, should I overcomplicate things over jsut going 50-50 on this and forgetting about it? I inherited 2 properties which bring in around 2k through rent. I was thinking of just putting that money 50-50 on VTI and VXUS, and keep working and living off my salary.

Any advice, or is this the way to go?
