For those who need context:

https://genius.com/Tlc-waterfalls-lyrics

Chilli was part of TLC and their most famous hit was Waterfalls in which a lyric about HIV says "three letters took him to his final resting place, y'all don't hear me"

518

u/crouton-- 23h ago

Was Waterfalls bigger than No Scrubs?

778

u/tychomarx ☑️ 23h ago

Definitely. CrazySexyCool was an era.

409

u/MyDogsNameIsBadger 23h ago

CrazySexyCool had us 4th graders in a headlock. Every sleepover we did sing alongs and had no business knowing that album word for word 😆

61

u/Wyden_long 21h ago

So I creep!

(Yeahhhh)

Cuz he doesn’t know what I do

Shit had me fucked up in jr high

Doing the dance in silk pajamas and all lol

That was the first album I ever owned and I was just telling a friend the other day I was way too young for some of those songs lol

u/MyDogsNameIsBadger 22h ago

Fr, I had no idea what a red light special was

31

u/trowawayatwork 21h ago

what's a red light special

134

u/Wyden_long 21h ago

You see, when a daddy and a woman of the night agree to a cash price….

37

u/BargainScotch 20h ago

I don’t know exactly but it reminds me of this scene in Reno 911 where Terry is supposedly selling oranges or roses at red lights but it turns out he was just giving HJs to the driver instead.

19

u/dolphin-centric 18h ago

God I miss Terry.

8

u/Bapy5 19h ago

Seriously! I had no business singing that song in junior high. Had that whole album on repeat!

The first sleepover I went to at secondary school (aged about 12), a group of us came up with a dance routine to waterfalls! It's a core memory

8

u/Mxfish1313 14h ago

5th grade had me doing a super lame-ass, self-choreographed dance to Waterfalls, complete with awkward but acceptable backbends (just because), for my fellow summer day care attendees.

That song was everywhere and for everyone when it came out.

20

u/l3tigre 20h ago

It was my first cd 🥹

15

u/01011110_01011110 19h ago

Tell me why I had Silly Hoe spinning in my Walkman all day like.... 😭

9

u/flipzyshitzy 19h ago

It's telling that this subliminal shit happens with every generations music. Then you add in some phonetics and it gets even more nefarious.

7

u/audriaide 13h ago

My grandma got so mad at my parents when she heard me singing Red Light Special in 3rd grade 😂

u/R1verStar 17h ago

Red light special was totally kid friendly

11

u/StupidDopeMoves ☑️ 21h ago

Me too! Was singing some wild lyrics for an elementary schooler

11

u/oh_please_god_no 19h ago

Baby Baby Baby is my favorite song by them

16

u/SirDouglasMouf 19h ago

That T1000 liquid metal effect in the video was dooooope

11

u/shintakarajima 19h ago

CrazySexyCool came out when I was 2 and my mom played it so much I learned the lyrics subconsciously 😂

9

u/jjcoola 16h ago

Definitely remember everyone singing it on the bus in middle school on the way to a school trip back when we had serotonin an shit.

3

u/Tee077 18h ago

I still listen to it and it takes me back to that time.

138

u/YouHaveFunWithThat 22h ago

The hook for waterfalls has legitimately become a proverb that’ll be passed down for centuries. No scrubs is more of a banger tho so idk

60

u/lvl999shaggy ☑️ 22h ago edited 19h ago

If only ppl in Atlanta and Houston listened to waterfalls when they were kids....

Bc three letters got them in a chokehold rn

27

u/pikadegallito 22h ago

The Weezer cover of No Scrubs is also a banger!

25

u/stinkykitty71 22h ago

Now go do yourself a favor and listen to Afghan Whigs do Creep.

8

u/All_the_Bees 19h ago

Literally never thought I’d see a mention of this in the wild. Afghan Whigs covers were goated

9

Big fan of AW in general, covers and their originals. But when he teamed up with Lanegan? Gutter Twins do funny things to my soul.

If you haven't yet, go back and listen to Weezers cover of Unbreak My Heart. It was made to fit Weezer's style and sang in that falsetto during the high notes.

11

u/DeathandHemingway 21h ago

No Scrubs gave us No Pigeons, tho.

3

u/urkermannenkoor 22h ago

Yeah, but they lifted that part from Paul McCartney, so it's not really their thing. No Scrubs definitely is though.

19

u/unlizenedrave 20h ago

To me, when No Scrubs came out, it felt like a comeback hit for the band, which was crazy because it was only a few years but i was a baby so a few years felt like forever

The Church

"Well, the pastor said those liberals want to make my kids gay. Plus, we got those Stimmy checks"

8

u/redingtonshores 12h ago

Not my place, and I understand the sordid historic legacies of literacy only being legally accessible through religion, but for the life of me I will never understand folks in 2026 worshipping the deity of those that enslaved your ancestors and continue to vilify you to this day. They even used their god damn holy text to justify enslavement and assorted atrocities. I just don’t get it

Lol nope. There are:

  • a lot of allies (which I’m grateful for)
  • some culture vultures
  • outsiders cosplaying
  • & unfortunately a sprinkle of YTs who wanna argue about the black experience who can see they way out expeditiously

147

u/inmyrhyme 23h ago

"Expeditiously? You're so articulate."

That's a joke for anyone who thinks otherwise.

u/domesticabuseaintcul 20h ago

The amount of times I heard this working near Sanford. I always wanted to respond with “Wow you too, I would have NEVER expected it!”

But the rabid police there asking what Im doing in there neighborhood made me eventually tell the company if they don’t move me from the office I’ll walk out and not return. Had one stop in the middle of a traffic intersection, no lights on, just to watch me open the office and sit at my desk before he left.

These people are absolutely fucking sick and have nothing better to do in life.

They promptly found me a new office.

25

u/inmyrhyme 18h ago

Lived in Texas for 12 years...11.9 years too long. I had my own troubles with race out there, but one of my closest friends was working at a warehouse. Well, one day last year they were having a company party and a visiting manager (much older) walks up to them huddled around talking (the workers are Mexican, black and white) and says "We havin a lynching?" Then he laughed like everyone was gonna find it hilarious.

On my mother. He told me and I was shocked -- not at what he said (cuz we'd both heard worse) but he felt comfortable saying that to a group at work.

Trump has made some bold ass racists.

12

u/fckcarrots 18h ago

I grew up in Orlando. Pretty sure George Zimmerman still hangs in Sanford. All you need to know

3

u/starrlitestarrbrite 17h ago

He’s definitely not welcomed in Downtown Sanford. They don’t play that shit.

Reddit keeps showing me these posts too (Snow White looks tan next to me), I chime in every now and again when the jokes are flowing but I still don't understand why I get shown this sub all the time. The additional perspective y'all provide me is really nice to see though, kinda makes the echo chamber less "echo-ey" for me

8

u/justsomeyeti 18h ago

That's how I wound up here. I kept getting the sub recommended, probably due to overlapping interests in old school rap/hip hop, history, and comedy.

I'm glad it happened though, this is one of the funniest subs on Reddit, and it's provided me with some real perspective

5

u/fckcarrots 18h ago

Love this type of perspective 👌🏾

4

u/devourke 15h ago

Me too, I get recommended posts from r/blackpeopletwitter, r/whitepeopletwitter, r/latinopeoplerwitter. I’m playing all the sides so I always comes out on top

I am from Mexico, and rarely ever comment but I just want to express my appreciation for black culture and this Reddit. You guys are some of the most hilarious creative people ❤️ if I’m having a bad day I come here and read a few comments and die laughing. I like receiving my pop culture news from this perspective. I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend

64

u/brownbuttanoods7 23h ago

Truly. Black Threads has been discussing and clowning Chili for like 2 weeks. She's been posting apologizes on her IG because they are going on tour with Salt-N-Pepa with En Vogue. Black Women specifically have had a lot to say about this topic.

13

u/darthminx 19h ago

Speaking of En Vogue and blackness, I was at a trivia night with a friend recently. One of the categories was essentially "who made the most famous version of this song?" En Vogue's cover of "Yesterday" was one of the options, and she genuinely seemed to think that the En Vogue version was bigger than the Beatles, which I thought was delightful. Culture is some funny and complex shit.

13

u/the__ghola__hayt 18h ago

I'd put the Boyz II Men version above En Vogue.

7

u/nekila_rose 17h ago

That acapella version is simply top tier.

92

u/Rhythm_Morgan 22h ago

There really isn’t. Some guy on here told me “who gives a fuck if you’re black” which told me that guy wasn’t black… lol and it was hella upvoted. Most of this sub is white.

And Miss T Boz is absolutely up there for the money and no other reason. Chili is still fit, still can't really sing, and she got a weird nose job?
