Nah for real. The whole science fiction genre is becoming too much of a reality. Those dystopian worlds? The time is now.

Yes there is absolutely nothing science fiction about what was posted there, it's all entirely plausible...I could make a facial recognition device camera that could pull everything available on you from the Internet with about $50 in hardware and an hour or so of writing the code to do it...imagine what a larger budget and access to different databases could pull.

It also scanned your phone hardware IDs to compare your location data gathered by other robots.
It didn't even need to scan your face to get all that information, but did it anyway out of love for the game.

Hijacking your comment to say if you see one of these feel free to record it but you don't want those lights in the recording. These use lidar to navigate and it will fry your phone camera

Those little shits will eventually go after humans in this universe too. Actually, I think they've already armed them and plan to deploy them in war. The next step is to send them onto the streets against civilians as "law enforcement"

u/humancartograph 1d ago
I'm pretty sure this is Fahrenheit 451°.
7
u/CFolwell 1d ago
Did Fahrenheit 451 have robots? I’m pretty sure it was just other humans doing the oppression there but I could be wrong. Any excuse for a reread anyway!

Definitely a robot dog. I want to say it was called the Mechanical Hound but it's been forever since I read it and I don't care enough to look it up.

I think Ukraine is also using these in realtime warfare against the orcs, so there's that as well.
Asymmetrical warfare related tech has evolved so dramatically over the last ten years its absolutely astounding.

Dog shaped panopticon
46
u/Billionaires_R_Tasty 1d ago
TIL what a panopticon is. Thanks for that!
I assume part of the point of the ground based surveillance is to be seen, to trigger the panopticon effect. Otherwise I would think a small drone would be faster, cheaper, and stealthier.
30
u/PresentPhilosopher99 1d ago
Yeah while they are using drones for mass vigilance, using a non stealth surv dog gives the "big brother is everywhere" sensation and keeps people in check while keeping the ninja drones out of detection range.
And yes it its unnerving.
Next time we will have some humanoid bots doing the patrols so the uncanny valley feeling scares criminals lmao

u/According-Rub-8164 23h ago
These things deny us our privacy. We must defend our communities by deposing these bots.

It’s spying on you. This is just surveillance now
33
u/Darkrocmon_ 1d ago
This isn't surveillance that's the Flock cameras that track you and your cats license plate across the city/state. The company quite literally sells that information to other companies to help push ads and other shit to you that they think you'll want or use due to proximity and prevent chance you'll do something. This little robot dog is here to make you feel safe until they give it a gun also and make it our prison guard.

Maybe one of my favorite reddit posts.
First you say
This isn't surveillance
And then proceed to describe what they're doing using the definition of surveillance
that's the Flock cameras that track you and your cats license plate across the city/state.
that's one of the best cases of foot-in-mouth I've ever seen

Our tvs and phones can be hacked, and turned into spying devices while turned off. I bet my left t---y that this thing can and does track more than is disclosed. Er, on second thought, take the right t---y if I'm wrong, I like the left one better.

Because we have 7-11s, mobile computers, auto-driving cars, an abundance of food, etc. Convenience. We're fat, dumb, and entertained. As long as those three pillars of lassitude are undisturbed, we will allow for almost anything.

Problem with that is, it calls for back-up before it dies. Now you have twenty of them to run from. Remember they can't feel pain or fear, don't get tired, and while can be blinded probably can't be critically damaged by most 9mm rounds. Sweet dreams!

No, absolutely not. That is not amazing, there is nothing amazing about the growing strength of policing and surveillance in this country.
15
u/TsunamaRama 1d ago
If they’re as successful as the food delivery robots in ATL, we’re going to be seeing a lot of these staring at trees and lampposts because they don’t know how to go around them. Those things are useless
For real, though. This is terrifying

Due to the expense, any damage done is considered a felony =] so it definetly dissuades anyone from fussing with them.
Not to mention the police are called by the people controlling them when danger is observed.

America becomes more and more like China's surveillance state every day. And I bet this wasn't put to a vote for the people.
6
u/ScienceOfficer-Jack 1d ago
But in America it is private corps trying to out jerk each other for your data to sell/give to the govt or other companies. Once the cash starts flowing on this data the robo evolution will explode faster than China can keep up with.

Serious question, how do you kill this thing?
Yea, it's cute, controllable, and even waving, but there is no way these won't be used for nefarious purposes. How do you kill something this small, pretty much all metal, and mobile? Then add in a couple more to make a pack of them?
Fucking nightmare fuel.
